even if it isn't directly anti-gay, it is still indirectly anti-gay. if i fall in love with an immigrant, i cannot grant them citizenship through marriage like a heterosexual couple would be able to. and i'd understand if you said something like "well, why can't they apply and do it themselves?" but the reality is some can't because they were brought here illegally during their childhood and the rest that can might still have to be deported temporarily while their status pends. but the point i'm trying to get across is that it's an avoidable torture for two people who are in love to be separated, when a federal legalization of same-sex marriage could prevent that.
