Scarlett Johansson: Curvy Women are Super-Sexualized

Scarlett Johansson has said that her "bombshell" persona is a result of the way curvy women are portrayed.
The actress, who stars as Janet Leigh in upcoming biopic Hitchcock, appeared in a photo shoot for Elle UK's February issue and spoke out about how her figure has earned her a reputation.

ikr? during that sex scene w/bcoop i was so jealous of her. still pissed i watched that movie though.
between_lights 30th-Dec-2012 08:59 pm (UTC)
I was jealous of bcoop tbh
opusdeihohoho 30th-Dec-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
she was bangin clothed and unclothed daaaaaaaaamn. i didn't really care about her until i saw her in that movie. such an inspiration in such a shitty movie lol
thesilverymoon 30th-Dec-2012 09:05 pm (UTC)
THIS. Before that movie I Was like "idg why everyone thinks she's so hot."
Then I saw that movie and during the sex scene with bcoop I was like "I GET IT."
I totally love that movie too. I know it's a terrible film, but it's such a guilty pleasure...
h0tfuss 30th-Dec-2012 08:56 pm (UTC)
I used to not "get" the fuss about her body but then I started noticing how unusual it really is to have nicely balanced proportions. Lots of women don't have waists that dip inward. Young actresses stay so thin that you can't tell what their figures really look like and they can manipulate silhouettes with clothes. Emma Stone and Kstew come to mind - thin girls who can wear anything, but probably wouldn't have nice figures if they were bigger.

So yeah, Scarlett's body isn't normal or average.
alchimie_amour 31st-Dec-2012 05:58 am (UTC)
you should read the stats on body shape distribution amongst women - basically it confirms what you say. Only a small percentage of the female population is truly hourglass like ScarJo, I think the majority (somewhere between 40-50%) is ruler shaped
winter_lace 31st-Dec-2012 07:13 am (UTC)
I think Leighton Meister and Nina Dobrev have nice pear shaped figures, with delightfully small waists. But there are very few nice hourglass figures in hollywood
h0tfuss 31st-Dec-2012 07:44 am (UTC)
I actually thought of Leighton as I wrote my original comment. She is so lovely. Nina is beautiful as well.

I am a thin brunette with small features and my sister is a bigger blonde with broader features who is still very beautiful. We always say that I am Blair and she is Serena.
tundrabeast 30th-Dec-2012 08:58 pm (UTC)
It is really awkward when you puberty overnight into a ~curvy~ body type and fucking everyone starts commenting on it. I hated it so much.
supermishelle 30th-Dec-2012 09:03 pm (UTC)
Agreed. Especially boys they are so horrible to girls who develop early.
winter_lace 31st-Dec-2012 07:16 am (UTC)
What about girls who a horrible about it? I started wearing a bra in grade five and the girls were just as bad or even worse than the boys.
kwikimart 30th-Dec-2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
Yup.
It means they are treated as sexually mature waaaaaaaay before they actually are.
Lord forbid someone does something to them that's wrong coz people don't believe them.
All they see is 'adult body' and they ignore the fact that the person is still a child.
Horrible.
thesilverymoon 30th-Dec-2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
Ugh, yes. I had that problem in junior high (especially with the boys--not so much with anyone else). I dealt with it by verbally (and sometimes physically, when the verbally didn't work) assaulting the boys until they left me alone.
h0tfuss 30th-Dec-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
I've always had a pretty dramatic waist/hip ratio. I had womanly curves when I was 8, even though I'm thin overall. I remember it being a bit of a "problem" when I did ballet, and I always got comments from adult men. I can't imagine how horrible it would have been if I also had big boobs.
ace_kay 30th-Dec-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
Ugh, ikr? My breasts developed when I was 8 (and hasn't since then...) and it was so gross to see all the boys in my class just staring at my chest. Ugh.
laurie_springs 31st-Dec-2012 11:30 am (UTC)
I NEVER have said this out loud but I think that's why I became ~precocious~ and a little ahead of my age mentally speaking. I was basically forced to because the sexualization started so early for me.
daydream11 1st-Jan-2013 04:57 am (UTC)
Black girls tend to develop early, so at least I wasn't the only one or even the first among my classmates and peers who went *boom* overnight, but it was still super awkward. Teachers didn't really know how to deal with us in elementary school, and when I finally went to school with white people, there was an obvious difference in how the (already well-developed) black girls were treated versus the (still flat) white girls were. I didn't really notice my shape until I was 12, because before then ALL of the other girls were shaped like me, too.

I kind of love that ad. Props to whoever wrote it. The make-up and faux-interview give it a retro, 1950s or 1960s vibe and the answers are so cliched it's funny.
hypnology 30th-Dec-2012 08:59 pm (UTC)
I feel like I would be considered curvy if I had bigger boobs, or well had boobs in general. Only one of my boobs is barely an A cup, the other smaller. But ScarJo is right and I still feel drunk. god, this is annoying.
theblackwidow 30th-Dec-2012 09:05 pm (UTC)
Lol I love your drunk posts. And I agree about boobs. I've started doing pectoral exercises to create the illusion of tits.

Well anyone who's seen a movie in the past 20 years has seen 90-lb leading ladies, so your incredulity is a bit of a moot point. But people can't help how their bodies skew in either direction.

Everybody has their own idea of what's sexy. No need to put down other body types just because you happen to not be attracted to them. Just makes you look like an asshole.

pineandapple Body question30th-Dec-2012 09:26 pm (UTC)
ONTD, I want to lose a few pounds, and right now I have that inward waist thing, but I'm afraid if I lose weight that my body will become completely square, like Kesha's.

So anyone out there with an hourglass-y body shape that lost weight?
ms_mmelissa Re: Body question30th-Dec-2012 09:34 pm (UTC)
If you're curvy now you should retain that shape. Losing weight doesn't magically make you square, just like gaining it won't magically make someone curvy.
kissoffools Re: Body question30th-Dec-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
If you have an hourglass body shape, it should stay that way. I've got that but I've just always been a little bigger, and when I started losing weight I've been losing it all over, my waist included. Granted I'm not down at my goal weight yet, but I can feel where my hipbones are and I can tell that they ain't ever getting down to the same size as my waist, haha.
mercibeaucul Re: Body question30th-Dec-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
I think your fear is very logical, but I suspect it'll be fine. I went down to barely over 100lbs in the summer and am 5'9 (psych/stress issues rather than eating ones) and have always had a pronounced waist, but it was even more pronounced when I was emaciated.
h0tfuss Re: Body question30th-Dec-2012 09:40 pm (UTC)
You'll see a change in proportion as it's happening, if it happens at all. It's not like you'll wake up and your nice shape will be gone. If you also tone, you might even make your proportions more striking - your abs/waist will tighten, and your hips and ass will get stronger.
pineandapple Re: Body question30th-Dec-2012 09:41 pm (UTC)
Problem is my chest and shoulders are wide. I'm not sure how I'll look if I lose a few pounds on my hips.
klmnumbers Re: Body question31st-Dec-2012 04:55 am (UTC)
Oh me. I lost weight and went from being definitely hourglassy to pear shaped. But it's still a borderline hourglass/pearshape.

You generally retain your shape, but you might lose faster in some places and feel awkward. I lost a lot in my bust (which is why I feel pearshaped now), but I'm still bigger in the places I was always bigger before.

The only thing that sucks for me having lost weight is that my ribcage is very big. When I was heavier, it wasn't as obvious because I was an 'hourglass.' Now, I lost pretty much all of the fat around my ribcage. So, the area of my side directly even with my breasts is smaller around than the ribs right below.

I am doing a terrible job explaining this, but basically my ribcage looks much larger now that there is less fat on my frame than it did before. I find it distracting, but I'm probably the only person who notices.
mingemonster 30th-Dec-2012 09:28 pm (UTC)

Reminds me of this article I read in either Glamour or Marie Clare about this woman that said when she was curvier all the guys she would go out on dates with would be like "I bet you're fantastic in bed" and basically treated her like a porn star when they slept together.
sangfwaah 30th-Dec-2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
went to VS yesterday to get new bras and had the lady there measure and fit me. I'd never been sized before and I always thought I was a B but they told me I was a D

like how. i don't think i'm that big and I can see maybe a C but D??
cityxpretty 30th-Dec-2012 09:54 pm (UTC)
That's happened to a couple of my friends. I think VS and Aerie (maybe others too) do vanity sizing in the opposite way clothing stores do. Boobs are also bigger than we think, it seems.
d00ditsemily 30th-Dec-2012 10:32 pm (UTC)
Aerie told me I was a 30C once LOL No boo I'm a 38C
chokey_lowkey 30th-Dec-2012 09:56 pm (UTC)
a letter alone means nothing, though, its just a ratio relative to the circumference of your chest, a D for a 32 has a cup that is smaller than a C for a 40.
bananasnrum 30th-Dec-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
VS told me once I was a 44D. I was actually a 36D at the time.
landwarinasia 30th-Dec-2012 10:12 pm (UTC)
Often women are a much bigger cup size than they think and it varies by the brand.

Also it's affected by the band size you wear because a 30D is a lot smaller than a 40D.
expromqueen 30th-Dec-2012 10:46 pm (UTC)
i've definitely read on ontd before that the vs ppl are not good at sizing...like, i think they just let the cashiers do it or something haha
morgenderper 30th-Dec-2012 11:14 pm (UTC)
The D cup changes size for each band size, a 30D cup will be much smaller than say a 40D because they don't hold the same volume. In terms of volume a 30D holds the same boobage as 32C 34B 36A

http://blog.butterflycollection.ca/2012/05/bra-school-not-all-d-cups-are-same-size.html

The majority of women don't wear their real bra size because the industry is fucked and sizes them wrongly because they don't want to make bands that are smaller than 32" and bigger than 46++" so they make them wear unfitting bra which in time makes the breast tissue migrate which can result to back fat and armpit fat !

http://blog.butterflycollection.ca/2012/10/do-you-have-breast-migration.html

You should try to measure yourself and see what size you are according to this method http://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/comments/rh26h/is_getting_fitted_for_a_bra_as_humiliating_as_it/c469bi0

chasing_center 30th-Dec-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
I went to Soma and the lady told me I was a B cup. I haven't been a B cup since I was 10, some of these people don't know what they're doing, she didn't even get the band size right.
klmnumbers 31st-Dec-2012 04:57 am (UTC)
I went from a 38D to a 38C. I've lost weight/volume in my chest, but my ribcage is huge and will never get more narrow (37 inches). But this new C cup feels too small and rides up on my sometimes.. but D cups gap.

DAMNIT BOOBS.
atomiccake 1st-Jan-2013 10:53 am (UTC)
I don't really trust those VS girls. They told me I was a 36D when I was actually a 34DD and I think it's because not all of their bras come in my actual size so I'd likely spend more money on 36Ds. If your size isn't even sold there I can imagine them totally lying. Plus they try to measure you when you walk in wearing like 3 layers of clothes.
