Anne Hathaway: My Les Misérables Performance Is "Eh"

Anne Hathaway knows modest is the hottest.

In a recent interview with with the Los Angeles Times, the Les Misérables star rated her final "I Dreamed a Dream" performance as "eh."

The 30-year-old actress said the film's director, Tom Hooper, let her perform over a dozen takes of the famed Les Mis song, even after he thought she did it perfectly on Take 4. After 20 takes, Hooper told the Golden Globe nominee she needed to move on.

"And I was like, 'Fair enough,'" she recalled. "I never bettered it."

And while she felt "eh" about her final rendition, others have certainly lauded her moving performance in the film. Including, perhaps Anne's most important critic, her mother, Kate, who said her daughter made "the perfect Fantine."

We'd have to agree.

I've had her I Dreamed a Dream on repeat for the past two days. So emotional, I love it.
zombieland 30th-Dec-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
Me too! I still get chills every time I listen. She did a beautiful job.
antique_faery 30th-Dec-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
Same. I do like it a lot. She did a good job.
goofusgallant 30th-Dec-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
same.
noxonesxlooking 31st-Dec-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
It was beautiful. There was so much emotion.

starrhi6 30th-Dec-2012 03:53 pm (UTC)
All the buzz is she's probably going to get an Oscar so why is she fishing for compliments? Shush now.
devolute 30th-Dec-2012 03:53 pm (UTC)
girl you can't have your cake and eat it too with this serious oscar campaign and self-deprecation
amethystcitrine 30th-Dec-2012 03:53 pm (UTC)
Idk I feel like I'd do the same thing. Some people just can't take a compliment.
fionaapple 30th-Dec-2012 03:55 pm (UTC)
Seriously. Same. If I was her and everyone was praising my performance, I would just be one of those people that watches it again and is like "People are praising me for that??"
amethystcitrine 30th-Dec-2012 04:04 pm (UTC)
Yup, I'd be covering my face with my scarf and saying "it was OK I guess."
magicpebble 30th-Dec-2012 04:01 pm (UTC)
Same, I'm horrible at receiving compliments.
overprotected 30th-Dec-2012 05:03 pm (UTC)
same, I feel so awkward, so I have like go-to responses just SO I don't start cutting myself down

"thank you, i really appreciate that"

i feel like a robot
antique_faery 30th-Dec-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
People have stopped bothering with a compliment toward me because I always point out my flaws and cut into myself immediately after. :/ It's a reflex, I can't help it.
freeze_i_say 31st-Dec-2012 07:44 pm (UTC)
late but ia bc I'm the same
ugly_jacket 30th-Dec-2012 03:54 pm (UTC)
why do people hate her so much, again? also my grandma said that the movie doesn't follow the book/play exactly in the ending? i read it twice in high school and never once paid attention, who wants to spoil me?
mellarks 30th-Dec-2012 04:02 pm (UTC)
I haven't actually watched the show in forever, but off of the top of my head iirc, they added the Bishop to the end for the movie. Also, Valjean's death scene/song has Eponine in it.
amethystcitrine 30th-Dec-2012 04:06 pm (UTC)
The main reason I "hated" her was because she took part in Ella Enchanted, a movie which completely wrecked the original story that happened to be one of my faves. I slowly forgave her after Brokeback Mountain, though.
magicpebble 30th-Dec-2012 04:13 pm (UTC)
Ugh, I am STILL pissed about Ella Enchanted. I think Anne could have been good in that role if they hadn't completely butchered the story, though.
fauxkaren 30th-Dec-2012 05:14 pm (UTC)
Omg. I was so pressed about the shittiness of the Ella Enchanted movie. I never blamed Anne though because I think she did her best with the terrible terrible script.
kissoffools 30th-Dec-2012 05:41 pm (UTC)
Lmao, you're exactly like my roommate. She LOATHES Anne, and I'm 100% positive it's because of the Ella Enchanted movie. She says her reasons are far more ~deep than that, but I hear her when she bitches about that movie. I know.
outpour 30th-Dec-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
The Ella Enchanted movie doesn't exist.
meow_tan 30th-Dec-2012 08:54 pm (UTC)
i didnt know there was an ella enchanted book, i loved the movie as a kid. oops
missjersey 30th-Dec-2012 04:08 pm (UTC)
I really don't understand why. She's really into LGBT rights and hasn't done anything "bad". I guess because she's a white actress tbh.
black_swan87 30th-Dec-2012 04:11 pm (UTC)
because she's white
cluelessraf 30th-Dec-2012 04:16 pm (UTC)
I have no idea either. She's a decent actress and I felt like her voice in Les Mis was the least annoying. I guess cuz she tries too hard and the sheep on this community will hate on anything that is not a basic looking white male actor.
dannyupshaw 30th-Dec-2012 04:18 pm (UTC)
you're looking for logic in a wrong place
hypnology 30th-Dec-2012 04:24 pm (UTC)
Her comments about weight loss for the role really irked me.
blacklicorice99 30th-Dec-2012 04:27 pm (UTC)
dont look for any good reasons within this thread
ilouboutin 30th-Dec-2012 05:05 pm (UTC)
It's not that I dislike her, I just find her quite annoying in the past few years. And I think her acting is terribly overrated. I used to stan her in TPD and TDWP days but something about her now is just so ... Idk, she gives me julia roberts vibes and I have no doubt her Oscar speech will be identical to hers.
lissalynn 30th-Dec-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)

They didn't change anything major but altered some of the songs. I didn't realize I was such a les mis purist but it bothered me that they cut a verse from "A Little Fall of Rain" and that they changed the words of the finale intro.
baboona 30th-Dec-2012 05:59 pm (UTC)
her acting sucks and everything about her personality is contrived

and i can't stand her face tbh
mistyraven 30th-Dec-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
Idg the hate either. Maybe overexposure?
these_eyes_lie 30th-Dec-2012 07:41 pm (UTC)
I can understand people being annoyed with her to an extent because she does exude a bit of a know-it-all theatre kid attitude. But then she goes and gives that amazing speech at the HRC dinner in 2008, was freaking amazing in Rachel Getting Married, always speaks with intelligence and thoughtfulness and slayed everyone's expectations in TDKR. So, personally, I can't hate. I think she's awesome.
ebertrules 30th-Dec-2012 07:42 pm (UTC)
idk. i think she's pretty harmless but ontd is so random in their hate and i almost get the feeling they hate on women who aren't stunning like it's some weird ~i could be in her place~ immature jealousy.
aubade_saudade 30th-Dec-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
People hate her bc she's white. A woman and she's white. Wait, no, beautiful a woman and she's white.

People need to learn there's all forms of bullying. Like Krista Stodden would say she's a victim of her vaginal white beauty
vanishingbee 30th-Dec-2012 03:55 pm (UTC)
Lol I just don't understand why the things she says make people dislike her. You confuse me, ontd frustrated people.
democralypse 30th-Dec-2012 04:47 pm (UTC)
me either... and the complaints that she won't stop when it's really the same quotes posted again and again by ontd users
these_eyes_lie 30th-Dec-2012 05:20 pm (UTC)
Ding ding ding! People have no common sense here.
xdecadentx 30th-Dec-2012 10:35 pm (UTC)
IDK, if people don't like someone on ONTD the comments are 'OMG SO ANNOYING' but if someone else says it, it's 'lol'.
courtkneee1 30th-Dec-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
I actually liked the toned down feel of the songs for the movie. I don't think it would worked with huge theatrical voices and that's what I see a lot of people criticizing it for.

Just like that sort of hushed singing Anne did wouldn't have worked on stage. Why are people expecting a freaking play on film, that would have been a disaster.
lilo146 30th-Dec-2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
i love her, and i havent seen the movie yet, but all this oscar campaing is really annoying and reminds me of melissa leo's ads.
sihaya09 30th-Dec-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
YOU GUYS, IT'S ALMOST LIKE SHE'S BEING CONSTANTLY INTERVIEWED BECAUSE SHE'S PROMOTING A RECENT FILM OR SOMETHING.

...Les Mis came out last week. Last week! Jeez.
browniecakemix 30th-Dec-2012 06:13 pm (UTC)
your common sense has no place in an Anne post tbh
sihaya09 30th-Dec-2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
Sadly.

I mean,

WHY CAN'T SHE JUST STOP TALKING? IT'S NOT AS THOUGH SHE'S CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED TO DO PROMO FOR THIS MOVIE.
ebertrules 30th-Dec-2012 07:43 pm (UTC)
lol the weird thing is people here hated her for years even when she was very underexposed. she's to ontd what sandra bullock is to me.

Ugh that is one of my pet peeves. Just take the damn compliment! It's been so ingrained into us that we shouldn't acknowledge or appreciate it when we do something that we think is great, and it's ridiculous! She was fantastic and she knows she was fantastic but if she said so everyone would come at her for being full of herself. It's the dumbest thing in the world.

Sometimes it's ok to say "fuck yes I was awesome, thank you".
eomir 30th-Dec-2012 04:07 pm (UTC)
Agreed. I am not good with people giving me compliments but I always just say, thank you. She could have easily said thanks, I'm happy with the performance and audiences seem to enjoy the movie so that's good. She doesn't have to be over the top about it or self deprecating. Just accept the compliment.

I know you're talking about Anne, but I am someone who can't take a compliment for the life of me. A reflex is for me to put myself down in some way as a response, but along with a "thank you." Some of us can't really help it. We have the worst self esteem issues. :/
innate_autumn 30th-Dec-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
I do the same thing, constantly thinking I'm not good enough and it's something I've been struggling to change for many years now. It's not that easy.
aubade_saudade 30th-Dec-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
I think it's a way of being rly self-involved. If you learn to think of others and be grateful you say thank you for compliments instead of being all fuck you no yr wrong I actually suck

pineandapple 30th-Dec-2012 06:26 pm (UTC)
Why not say "It's a movie and a role I'm very proud of"? Please, she's so full of it.

mellarks 30th-Dec-2012 04:03 pm (UTC)
The fact people on ONTD hate her so much makes me want her to sweep all of the awards, even though I totally think she deserves them no matter what. ONTD's pressedness over her getting all of the awards would give me life.
headswillroll88 30th-Dec-2012 04:15 pm (UTC)

lol I hate her but I'm fine with her getting awards. its a popularity contest and she tries hard. good for her.
kwikimart 30th-Dec-2012 07:31 pm (UTC)
UGH STOP WITH THIS
Everyone knows she's going to win, the problem is her not the fact she's going to win
mellarks 30th-Dec-2012 07:50 pm (UTC)
That's my point, though. People on ONTD irrationally hates her so much, I'll delight in the ridiculous anger and outrage that will still happen when she wins.

I find the OTT hatred of her hilarious. I'm not even a stan or anything, but it's fantastic to see people frothing over everything she says and does.
onyxobsidian 30th-Dec-2012 08:21 pm (UTC)
I loved the INTENSE hate she got all throughout the filming/promoting of Batman and everyone talking about what a terrible choice she was and how shitty she was going to be.

Then the movie came out, and everyone was like, "Well.. she was okay I guess" being all butt hurt that all the reviews lauded her as the best part of the film
xdecadentx 30th-Dec-2012 10:36 pm (UTC)
It would be hilarious.
