Each dwarf was meant to look different so that the audience would have an easier time identifying them. It's also the reason why Gloin resembles Gimli since they're direct father and son (and the audience can make that connection) but Gloin doesn't resemble too closely to Oin (his brother) so there's no confusion. haha
