Facebook, One Direction, 'The Avengers' and death: what people read on Wikipedia this year

Wikipedia isn't self-involved enough to release information on the most popular pages of 2012, but, if you're interested (and have the time, energy and skill set to peruse log files), you're able to see what people wiki-ed this year. Swedish software engineer Johan Gunnarsson was kind enough to go ahead and take care of that for everyone. He published a list of the top 10 visited pages on the English version of Wikipedia. The results won't surprise you. Facebook finished on top with more than 32.5 million views. The page for "Wiki" earned the second spot (how meta). Also, people wanted to know who died this year ("Deaths in 2012" came in at No. 3) and everyone was trying to figure out what the heck a One Direction is. Apparently it's a band? Go figure.

1. Facebook - 32,647,942

2. Wiki - 29,613,759

sadisticsidhe 28th-Dec-2012 09:01 pm (UTC)
Because people like my mom exist.

I should explain more. My mom googles google to find google and ends up clicking wiki's google page and getting confused and why she can't use google.

I swear, she's actually very smart but technology is a no go.

I Google'd "Google" once just to see if it would crash.

It didn't. I was disappointed.

How odd lol
sugarcrawler 28th-Dec-2012 08:55 pm (UTC)
wikipedia is weird sometimes...cos you know people can edit the pages. the other day i was looking at the gumbo wiki page and someone had edited it to say gumbo is a nasty and dirty looking stew...
sandvich 28th-Dec-2012 08:58 pm (UTC)
My favorite Wikipedia edit of all time was when someone changed Chamillionaire's page to say that he was the evolved form of Charmander.

my favorite was the list of serial killers by number of victims: "This list is incomplete; you can help by expanding it. Please do not expand it by killing people."
sadisticsidhe 28th-Dec-2012 09:27 pm (UTC)
My fave edit is when I was reading the Oedipus Rex page and on See Also was 'Motherfucker.'

I wish I had taken a screen cap.
grapefruitzzz 28th-Dec-2012 09:59 pm (UTC)
my favourite is the man whose friends put him as editor of a newspaper in the 90s (among 100s of other comedy entries), and it made the official Leveson report read by the government because they didn't fact-check.

vampireweekend 28th-Dec-2012 08:58 pm (UTC)

lovepollution 28th-Dec-2012 09:00 pm (UTC)
I do when I'm feeling lazy and already have Google open.
mynamehere07 28th-Dec-2012 09:01 pm (UTC)
Usually the wiki page is the first thing that comes up when you search. So I never thought of adding wiki.
noskidaddle 28th-Dec-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
yes, cuz sometimes imdb or the tv show's website comes up first and i'm nhf
sadisticsidhe 28th-Dec-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
occasionally. I'll google something and the wikipedia page doesn't show up so I'm like wtf? and add wiki

evawhimsy 28th-Dec-2012 09:11 pm (UTC)

devolute 28th-Dec-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
yup because i do all my searches in the address bar that goes directly to a google search. if i want the wiki article, anyway.
mingemonster 28th-Dec-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)
lol yes

it's so much faster than actually going to wikipedia
aleisha_xo 28th-Dec-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
all the time lol
pimpmytardis 28th-Dec-2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
If I want to look something up on wikipedia, I go to wikipedia. But if I'm looking for a fandom wiki I can never remember if they're hosted on wikia or pbworks or whatever so sometimes I do google like that.
hypnology 28th-Dec-2012 09:41 pm (UTC)
haha yes.
fred2265 28th-Dec-2012 10:46 pm (UTC)

i was confused about 2012 phenomenon then i realized they meant the end of the world nutters
vampireweekend 28th-Dec-2012 08:58 pm (UTC)
the most annoying thing about wikipedia is i go and look at just one thing then i end up on another page then i end up in a whole portal of subjects and i'm on it all night

this is something i deal with 2 times a week
dracopet 28th-Dec-2012 09:01 pm (UTC)
My danger zone on wiki is true crime.
piratesswoop 28th-Dec-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
same, i click the categories and get lost and then go on youtube to see if there are documentaries about it its ridic
mingemonster 28th-Dec-2012 09:34 pm (UTC)
For me it's true crime, religion, politics, history, psychiatric medication... I get stuck so easily lol
pimpmytardis 28th-Dec-2012 09:42 pm (UTC)
The list of serial killers is so fascinating. I always get ideas for stories there. And stuff on neurological and psychological conditions.
sugarcrawler 28th-Dec-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
thts what happens to me when i go on imbd
sugarcrawler 28th-Dec-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)

sadisticsidhe 28th-Dec-2012 09:05 pm (UTC)
That happened to me once. I don't remember where I started but I remember being baffled on how I ended up on Japanese serial killers.
bodyline 28th-Dec-2012 09:06 pm (UTC)

classic_mold137 28th-Dec-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
lol my friend and I used to have this game where we clicked the random article button, and then tried to get to "Lord of The Rings" from there through whatever links they were on the random article.

Sometimes you get so bored.

Wikipedia, Cracked, and TV Tropes is the black hole triangle because i just look and look and look...
onceupon_awish 28th-Dec-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
This is me on wikipedia too.
mynamehere07 28th-Dec-2012 08:59 pm (UTC)
Almost 22 million people wiki'ed 50 shades? ugh.
dracopet 28th-Dec-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
I'm sure plenty of them did not go on to read it.
onceupon_awish 28th-Dec-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
I did it to know the plot without having to read the book.
sanditar 28th-Dec-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
i only go to wikipedia to check if an album has a deluxe edition or bonus tracks so i can download it.
latexana 28th-Dec-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
people still wiki google? I would have expected it was already figured it out.
tankmachine 28th-Dec-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
my film teacher this semester would always google Google to use it
a_wa 28th-Dec-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
I Google'd "Google" once, only to see if it would crash.
pineandapple 28th-Dec-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
I thought it'd be something weirder to be honest.
viakyusu 28th-Dec-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
I'm so confused...why would someone wiki, "wiki"?! lmao Wikiception
sandstorm 28th-Dec-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
I've done that sometimes just to laugh.
classic_mold137 28th-Dec-2012 09:25 pm (UTC)
I did it out of curiosity.
howlcosmiclove 28th-Dec-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)

mingemonster 28th-Dec-2012 09:41 pm (UTC)
Story of my life. I always get asked how I know so much random shit, and I'm always too embarrassed to admit that it's because I get sucked in by the wikimonster
aka_plynn 28th-Dec-2012 09:44 pm (UTC)
Me too. Downside: no one wants to play trivia games with us.
threeatatimejay 28th-Dec-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
LOL.
kwikimart 28th-Dec-2012 11:17 pm (UTC)
Accurate!

But actually sometimes you don't learn anything, you're just too busy clicking on hyperlinks either to explain a word meaning/concept and you end up looking at something completely ridic and unnecessary
minakuu 28th-Dec-2012 11:41 pm (UTC)
LOL so true
mcdreamyy 29th-Dec-2012 04:53 am (UTC)
lmao yes
sandstorm 28th-Dec-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
I mean, I'd rather read synopsis of 50 Shades and Avengers than read or watch it.
