Freeman & Cumberbatches Talk Desolation of Smaug

The “Sherlock” co-stars are together again in next year’s second chapter of the “Hobbit” trilogy and both stars offered a few words in the new Empire Magazine.

Martin Freeman, who stars in the franchise as Bilbo Baggins, was seen in one promotional photo nearly swimming in the dragon’s gold.

“I’m Scrooge McBaggins. It’s about a million pieces. It’s the biggest pile of gold I’ve ever seen! Well, obviously – I’m not used to hanging out in big piles of gold! They’re all fake, obviously, but it was a big eff-off pile of gold made it very hard to walk on.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, who stars with Freeman on the BBC hit series “Sherlock,” voices Smaug the Terrible, but doesn’t get to reunite with his co-star face-to-face for “Hobbit.”

“We weren’t in the same room together. If Martin had been there, I would have wanted to play off him, but there are size issues. Smaug is bigger than the hobbit – I think I can say that! This isn’t the riddles scene. It’s slightly different, it’s intricate. Smaug doesn’t engage with the Hobbit the same way as Smeagol does. Smeagol gets drawn in, whereas Smaug is on much more of an ego trip. He likes to feel dominant at all times, and because of what he’s capable of, he is.”

The adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ was originally made as a two-part film, however Warner Bros, Peter Jackson, producer Fran Walsh and writer-producer Philippa Boyens announced a few months back that ‘The Hobbit’ films will now be a trilogy.

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” arrives December 13, 2013.

But I thought PJ didn't have the rights to the Unfinished Tales which is why when they mention the two blue wizards they don't mention the names because their names aren't mentioned in the appendicies, only in the Unfinished Tales.

he didn't? lord jesus then it's just the... appendixes?
sadisticsidhe 27th-Dec-2012 02:43 am (UTC)
I think so....

I googled and everyone says he doesn't have the rights to the silmarillion+Unfinished+History of Middle Earth+etc etc Only Hobbit and LotR

you're right PJ doesn't have the rights to it. christopher tolkien will never let that happen as long as he's alive. he hates what PJ did to his father's books.

I'm not sure that would be the case. They had the scene at the Fords of Isen with Eomer and Theodred in TTT, which iirc was in the Unfinished Tales.
sadisticsidhe 27th-Dec-2012 02:47 am (UTC)
Everywhere I look says he doesn't have the rights.

I don't have the books w/ me rn but it says in TTT that Theodred was killed at Isen, right? You don't need to know the blow by blow that was in the UT to film it. Because only the aftermath was filmed, not the battle. I think they were skirting around the issue.

EDIT: del Toro said they only have the rights to LotR and the Hobbit:

"The first film would reportedly deal with the events in Tolkien's 1937 book, a prequel to the Rings trilogy. A second movie would connect The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the first part of the trilogy, and be based on some speculation.

"Four books are in the domain of the copyright, and there are appendices and ideas and things that can be traced without risk, but I have to be careful not to overstep," del Toro said. "We believe there is a way to create this film and make it interesting, but it's too early." Del Toro is meeting with Jackson, who is producing and co-writing the Hobbit films, and studio executives to figure it out."

Okay, that's interesting. I guess that's why they didn't go into too much detail about Thrain's capture, or Thorin and Gandalf's initial meeting (which were detailed in the Unfinished Tales).

ngl I haven't read the unfinished tales but my cousin mentioned it to me at Christmas that they didn't have the rights and explained "that's why X and X didn't happen." And I was like "Well that makes a lot of fucking sense." When I googled it nobody says that they do have the rights, everyone says that they don't; only LotR and the Hobbit.
lestat 27th-Dec-2012 03:03 am (UTC)
so... how one earth are they including these extra events?
onceupon_awish 27th-Dec-2012 03:15 am (UTC)
Thorin and Gandalf's initial meeting is in Quest For Erebor, which is in LOTR's appendixes, I think.

Is this interview from a while back, or does Guillermo Del Toro still have a hand in the production of the Hobbit movies?
sadisticsidhe 27th-Dec-2012 03:23 am (UTC)
Well he was given credit as a writer. I don't know how much he was involved.

He doesn't have the rights to the Silmarillion.
