Freeman & Cumberbatches Talk Desolation of Smaug

The “Sherlock” co-stars are together again in next year’s second chapter of the “Hobbit” trilogy and both stars offered a few words in the new Empire Magazine.

Martin Freeman, who stars in the franchise as Bilbo Baggins, was seen in one promotional photo nearly swimming in the dragon’s gold.

“I’m Scrooge McBaggins. It’s about a million pieces. It’s the biggest pile of gold I’ve ever seen! Well, obviously – I’m not used to hanging out in big piles of gold! They’re all fake, obviously, but it was a big eff-off pile of gold made it very hard to walk on.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, who stars with Freeman on the BBC hit series “Sherlock,” voices Smaug the Terrible, but doesn’t get to reunite with his co-star face-to-face for “Hobbit.”

“We weren’t in the same room together. If Martin had been there, I would have wanted to play off him, but there are size issues. Smaug is bigger than the hobbit – I think I can say that! This isn’t the riddles scene. It’s slightly different, it’s intricate. Smaug doesn’t engage with the Hobbit the same way as Smeagol does. Smeagol gets drawn in, whereas Smaug is on much more of an ego trip. He likes to feel dominant at all times, and because of what he’s capable of, he is.”

The adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’ was originally made as a two-part film, however Warner Bros, Peter Jackson, producer Fran Walsh and writer-producer Philippa Boyens announced a few months back that ‘The Hobbit’ films will now be a trilogy.

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” arrives December 13, 2013.

OH MY GOD THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS

THAT SCENE IS LIKE +100000000 CREEPY AND I CANNOT WITH EVERYONE GUSHING OVER HOW ROMANTIC IT IS

NO IT'S NOT, HE'S CREEPING ON HER AND ON HER WEDDING VIDEO AND SHE'S MARRIED HIS BEST FRIEND???? HE'S A HORRIBLE PERSON WHO DESERVES TO BE FOREVER ALONE

I'm just not here for any aspect of stalking or uber-possessive behavior being considered romantic. Just...when did that become the status quo for romance? It's fucking CREEPY and I would've ran upstairs and gotten my husband off the chair to tell him what an obnoxiously creepy fuck his friend was being before making sweet love to that tall glass of chocolate cocoa.

lolololol amen to that gurl

I remember one time I commented about that scene creeping me out in ONTD and all these people replied with crap like, "clearly you've never loved someone you couldn't have." And I'm like, "yeah, I have fallen for someone I couldn't have, BUT I DON'T GO CREEPING ON MY BEST FRIEND'S SIGNIFICANT OTHER DAMN AND ALSO I KNOW WHAT BOUNDARIES ARE"

I think the scene itself could be lovely and romantic if it weren't for the circumstances surrounding it.
