First look at Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer in 'Fruitvale' and interview with the director,

Scheduled to make its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival next month is the Ryan Coogler-directed indie drama Fruitvale, which stars Octavia Spencer, Michael B. Jordan, Tristan Wilds and Melonie Diaz.

Based the murder of 22-year old Oscar Grant (played by Jordan in the film) - Fruitvale is produced by Forest Whitaker.

In the video interview below, director Coogler talks the film, his motivations for making it, and the filmmaking process in general. I expect Tambay will be talking more in-depth with Ryan at Sundance.

And underneath the video, as well as above, you'll some first-look still images from the film, featuring Octavia Spencer, Jordan, and Diaz.

what do you want me to explain? google oscar grant
misscrystal 22nd-Dec-2012 07:40 pm (UTC)
Agreed. Any time I think about what happened I get so pissed off. Such a waste of life. That cop deserves to be rotting under a jail somewhere.
superhetoric 22nd-Dec-2012 07:45 pm (UTC)
ia that it's weird and seems a bit exploitative that they made a film based on this story, but at the same time, this is a great way of making people aware of what happened. i don't live in the bay area, but i have a lot of friends and clients who do, and i usually stay in oakland when i'm there. every time i ride the bart, i think of oscar grant.
etoile_amore 22nd-Dec-2012 07:10 pm (UTC)

britneyspears 22nd-Dec-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)
god i remember the uproar over oscar grant while i was a high school student in sf
it'll be interesting to see how they portray it in a film
flumes 22nd-Dec-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
wait what's this about? ugh he is so beautiful! and very good at his job!
sluices 22nd-Dec-2012 07:31 pm (UTC)
back in 2009 a police officer pulled a gun on oscar grant, who was on the ground but "resisting arrest"
the cop said he would tase him and then shot him in the back, killing him
there were riots and protests afterwards and the cop ultimately got 2 yrs and is out on parole now i think
flumes 22nd-Dec-2012 07:31 pm (UTC)
wow i had no idea/never heard of this actually? or maybe i did but forgot u know my mmry is bad but jfc.
ms_mmelissa 22nd-Dec-2012 10:09 pm (UTC)
I remember hearing about this, but not about the follow up with the cop. JFC how depressing.

This story makes me so angry. I saw the video of the shooting, and yes, the cop looked shocked after he realized he pulled out his gun, but Oscar wasn't even resisting arrest for him to have pulled any weapon out. Ugh. It was yet another case of a white cop being an asshole and targeting a young black man while using unnecessary force.

I can't believe the cop got TWO fucking years and credit for time served. He didn't even serve six months! I don't care how remorseful he is now - he had no right to pull his firearm.
