Leona Lewis' new single sells less than 600 copies

"Lovebird" has failed to scramble into the Top 200

She has long been touted as the show’s biggest star.

And with contestants like Christopher Maloney, Leon Jackson and Jedward making The X Factor more muppet show than music one, Leona Lewis has long been its saving grace.

Until now.

The Hackney-born singer’s latest single, Lovebird, has failed to scramble into the Top 200. Yes, 200.

With the 200th track on this chart selling only 600 copies, this means Le’s latest has sold even fewer units.

It comes after Glassheart, the album from which it’s taken, became the star’s first record not to debut at No.1.

The 27-year-old’s disappointing chart position (despite an expensively produced accompanying video) comes two years after her plans to tour the US were shelved.

And while there is no disputing Leona’s vocal ability, or talent, the question now remains as to how much longer Sony and Simon Cowell will continue to back their biggest export.

A source tells me: “This is a bitter pill to swallow for Leona and there is no sugar-coating it.

“The single was strong and should have done better but, unfortunately, there was no real marketing force behind it.

“Also, it wasn’t released as an official second single. Rather it was pushed out on what is known as an ‘impact day’.

“Crucially, it didn’t capture the imagination of radio bosses and got little airplay. Most people, unless they have the album, have never heard the song.

“It’s a little embarrassing for the label because they have invested so heavily in Leona.

“Having said that, the album did really well and the main thing for Leona is that she’s really proud of all the tracks. There are no fillers."
