The crazy thing is that she and her family were, by all accounts, financially stable. Mental-health issues aside, she seemed to make the transition to post-competitive life much better than many athletes. She and her husband owned a real-estate company in Wisconsin. The Smoking Gun people checked public records and found there was nothing to suggest that the family was in trouble.
Also, she was still making appearances at various running events - including the Disney races. And she's been retired from racing for almost 12 years, I believe.
