Ted Nugent Blames Connecticut School Shooting on "Politically Correct Culture"

Rocker and NRA board member Ted Nugent blamed America's “politically correct culture” for the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut in an op-ed for the Washington Times.

Nugent also lamented that traditional family values "have been under siege for decades by our culture of contempt"

Nugent wrote in part:

Some blabbermouths already are using the Connecticut school massacre to promote their anti-gun agenda even though more gun laws won’t prevent a psychotic from getting a gun and killing us.

... The ugly and dangerous truth is that we live in an embarrassing, politically correct culture that exalts and rejoices in the bizarre; aggressively promotes an “anything goes” value system; and vilifies, condemns and mocks traditional societal values and customs at every opportunity.

... More laws and more restrictions won’t fix our culture. The problem we face is much deeper and more insidious. What ails us is a spiritual bankruptcy of cultural values that actually matter. More laws and restrictions can’t cure that.

... As with most things, the cure to this mess begins and ends with the family. Traditional family values have been under siege for decades by our culture of contempt. In the absence of a solid family, the whole thing slowly unravels and rots.

i wish people would realize that just because there are people out there who are a threat to either themselves, or to the public, that doesn't mean that anti-gun laws and stricter regulation is unnecessary or useless. one of the biggest reasons why school shootings, murders, and gun violence is still around is because guns are given out as candy and are a commodity as well as people aren't taught how to use them and when to use them correctly. also, the mental health care system is inadequate in dealing with mentally unhealthy people so this is a multifaceted issue and not 1 thing will fix it. i think people need to realize that we NEED anti-gun laws and stricter regulation on the guns that ARE allowed in order to DECREASE violence. elimination might never be possible due to mental illness, but an overhaul of the mental health care system will prevent as many of these cases AS POSSIBLE, so that as many families don't have to be put through this and people as possible do not have to die.

browniecakemix 20th-Dec-2012 12:16 am (UTC)
While I agree that the American mental health care system needs an overhaul, I am really troubled by the way everyone is just blaming these types of things on mental illness. It's rude to most people who are mentally ill tbh and it's also just a way of distancing us from the realities of (mass) murder and the influences that could lead someone to commit it.
nothingcleva89 26th-Dec-2012 08:01 am (UTC)
Been sayin' this, but it's a lost battle at this point. Mental illness is the new scapegoat.

I got into a huge argument with my parents about this. My mom thinks each public school in the country should have two secret volunteers carry a gun and then if shooters knew that but didn't know who had them, they would stop shooting up schools. I couldn't get sense into her about how more guns are just accelerating the problem ughhhhhh
babyyouloveit 19th-Dec-2012 09:00 pm (UTC)
I got into the same fight last night. My mom was like "I'M GONNA BUY A RIFLE. WHAT IF SOMEONE COMES TO OUR HOUSE WITH A GUN" and I kept saying "WELL WHY AND HOW DID THEY GET THE GUN"

xeroxicide__ 19th-Dec-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
I mean how do you even finance that and who's liable for those individuals if they get hurt. It's making everything about the situation seem more high risk for everyone involved and we don't freakin' live in TWD. And VOLUNTEERS??...yeah I can see the crazies who sign up for that job and develop some sort of complex and then ~~inadvertently~~ shoot an innocent person.
arsenicsugar 19th-Dec-2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
lol someone on my FB was saying that the teachers should've carried guns.

The problem with this is that even trained gun carriers miss. IDK if these people know that life isn't an action movie. Bullets aren't going to magically miss you because you're the "good guy" and bullets aren't going to hit people any more because they're "bad guys". And do we really want people missing their target in a roomful of freaked out children who running around trying to hide?
orangeandblack 19th-Dec-2012 09:08 pm (UTC)
My dad and I got into it about this sort of shit, he thinks teachers should pack heat. "If they're ambushed, they'll just be harmed and probably have that gun taken away and used against them, etc." If you're carrying a gun, you better be able to pull it before the dude that busts in behind you gets there, jfc people.
francesbcobain 19th-Dec-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
or they could just try to shoot everyone in the school....

idk some sick fuck would try to make a game of it, you know?

Similar issue on my Facebook I ended up creating another one and friending the sane people I knew because those dumbasses + my pregnancy hormones = stress attack and I knew it wasn't going to end after that conversation either.
celtic_thistle 19th-Dec-2012 10:18 pm (UTC)
My parents think the same. And my dad's a retired cop who now teaches firearm safety and he has so many guns :| Mind you, he IS actually responsible, but a lot of the idiots he teaches really aren't (and he ends up telling them not to come back...yet they still have the guns.) But yeah, my parents are so froth-at-the-mouth anti-Obama it bugs me.

If someone who has a gun, sees someone else pointing a gun at them - that's just gonna cool that situation down right away. Every time.

nah, Ted, I'm pretty sure what caused this was a mix of America's laughably pathetic gun control laws, a lack of funding for adequate and accessible mental health services, and the BS attitude many white men have that makes them think they're entitled to whatever the fuck they want just because they have a lilywhite penis and if they can't have it somebody needs to be punished for it

I'm pretty sure it isn't politically correct to shoot up a school?? Idg what he's trying to say
lack_ofcolour 19th-Dec-2012 09:55 pm (UTC)
I think he's trying to say that our political correctness is ruining "traditions" (I assume he means tolerance of gay marriage and the like), which is ruining families, which is making kids shoot up schools. Basically, he's just using this tragedy as an excuse to go on about his bigoted agenda. Klassy.
aotearoagal 20th-Dec-2012 05:40 am (UTC)
If that fuckwit (Nugent) actually thought about it, political correctness is actual turning our kids into scared, cottonwool-wrapped, entitled bastards who've never heard the word "no". Much like him.
diggingtrouble 19th-Dec-2012 08:59 pm (UTC)
i just dont understand people who say teachers should all start carrying guns. who's to say one of them isn't going to go crazy one day and shoot their students? i mean, it's a terrible thing to think about but it's not impossible.
ahzuri 19th-Dec-2012 10:04 pm (UTC)
My first point whenever someone brings this up as a valid solution. That or someone is going to come shoot up a school and more people are going to end up dead because they are going to see everyone with guns and shoot the wrong person because of possibility of previous scenario happening, whos to know who the real gunperson is.
celtic_thistle 19th-Dec-2012 10:20 pm (UTC)
mte. Half the guys in my 8th-grade class would've been shot by graduation if our teachers had had guns.
ladypolitik 20th-Dec-2012 05:27 am (UTC)
Seriously, these people need to actually work with teachers. Shit is a high-stress career, and I can already count off FIVE co-workers who should subsequently NEVER have access to guns or even basic pointy objects.
fusilli_head 23rd-Dec-2012 03:35 am (UTC)
old post, but three times in my life in two different schools i've seen teachers lose their shit with students bad enough to scare me into telling my parents and having them do some shit to get these people fired. one guy picked up a desk and tossed it out of a fourth story window because he was angry. if that guy had a gun i'd be dead. another time a female teacher tied a boy to his desk because he was disruptive. she could have shot him execution style or some shit. and another time a student got into a physical fight with a teacher and our principal over another teacher the student and teacher were both fucking.
