Anne Hathaway Required Custom-Made Vegan Shoes for Her Les Misérables Character

When Anne Hathaway took to the red carpet in a fab pair of faux leather Tom Ford knee-high gladiator sandals for the New York premiere of Les Misérables last week, it was the first time many of us had ever heard of vegan footwear.

But as it turns out, the hard-core vegan has been rocking custom-made cruelty-free kicks for quite some time. In fact, when filming the Golden Globe-nominated flick, Hathaway made sure all of her character's shoes were vegan-friendly, too.

"We had to find very specific shoemakers to create lace-up boots and ankle boots," costume designer Paco Delgado told Footwear News. "We also did flats that were much more sophisticated."

While it's a stretch to say leather-free footwear was of much importance to Hathaway's Fantine character (you know, because she was trying to avoid living on the streets), it's clear the matter is very much a priority for the actress, who also stepped out in Casadei red satin vegan platform pumps for a recent appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

And while her fancy footwear may be a little extreme for most, there's no doubt that cruelty-free is always chic.

well thats nice
ladyofmachinery 19th-Dec-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
I know it's not her fault the media keeps bringing this up and Anne, I love you girl, but I'm sick of hearing about this. yeah yeah she lost a lot of weight.
neaira 19th-Dec-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
This is a post about shoes.
lespapillons 19th-Dec-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
I was going to say...
ladyofmachinery 19th-Dec-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
LOL yes I realize that but her diet is still brought up. I was just making a semi OT comment as I saw two separate articles on fb this morning about either her diet or her weight loss. Should've specified in my OC.
fabouluz 19th-Dec-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
It's not about her weight-loss.
butterbuns 19th-Dec-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
...you're sick of it and then you bring it up? O.o
fabouluz 19th-Dec-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
I think it's good because it provides work for small businesses, instead of buying mass-produced shoes etc.
marywebgirl 19th-Dec-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
I've heard of vegan footwear before...

ebenetwo 19th-Dec-2012 07:09 pm (UTC)
lol i was like "lawd" when i saw the "graduate of harvard university" but man if i graduated from an ivy league i'll prolly name drop that shit all the time
actxappalledx 19th-Dec-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)
LOL, ikr. I would be shaking peoples hands and introducing myself, "Hi, nice to meet you, my name is ____, graduate of Yale!"
chunkyboucle 19th-Dec-2012 07:17 pm (UTC)
The part that makes me giggle is that it's so out of place here. Does Harvard offer a degree in shoe design?
imnotasquirrel 19th-Dec-2012 07:43 pm (UTC)
it fits in perfectly with the usual harvard attitude tbh!

i've told this story on ontd before, but what the hell, i'll tell it again because it makes me giggle: my bff was interviewing for med school residency positions, and one of the schools she interviewed at was harvard. they had the following exchange:

interviewer: so, what have you heard is harvard's greatest weakness?
friend: well, i heard that [blah blah blah].
interviewer: oh, well, let me tell you why that actually isn't a weakness at all...[blah blah blah].
friend: okay...so then what would YOU say is harvard's greatest weakness?
interviewer: *taken aback* i would say that there aren't any! when i was accepted to harvard, it was the greatest day of my life!
friend: ...

she ended up not putting it down as one of her matches lol.
spike_freak 24th-Dec-2012 05:11 am (UTC)
Except she only got in because of her name and not through academics.
galagooo 24th-Dec-2012 10:26 am (UTC)
After going to a really big name undergrad I'm not impressed by college brand names anymore because there are some legitimately mean-spirited people that manage to graduate.
imnotasquirrel 19th-Dec-2012 07:43 pm (UTC)
aren't those shoes expensive as fuck
fred2265 19th-Dec-2012 07:54 pm (UTC)
I hadn't either, but it makes sense..

The "Natalie Portman Oscar Plan" has coming to fruition.

My boss is a Harvard Graduate.
kanimaki 19th-Dec-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
I can't wait to see the movie.
holyfrijoles_2 19th-Dec-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
that's why i could never be vegan. i'm too lazy to think of all the little things you have to do to maintain the lifestyle.
devolute 19th-Dec-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
it becomes second-nature after like a month or two. i see leather, wool, silk and it's just a giant X in my brain.
ialmrnt5 19th-Dec-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
wool too? are animals really harmed in the making of wool though?
katrinar 19th-Dec-2012 07:34 pm (UTC)
serious question: how are the chemicals used in creating vegan "leathers" and other products justifiable? many products are made with PVC which is very bad for the environment to produce.

onyxobsidian 19th-Dec-2012 07:09 pm (UTC)
Way too much fucking work, and I love just about anything out there you could possibly eat (I'm an amazing dinner guest/restaurant patron -- I am just not fucking picky at all) so the thought of putting so much work into what you eat is pointless, except I do try to avoid a lot of processed foods, but as long as you stick to the perimeter of the grocery store that usually works out.
frenchverbs 19th-Dec-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
One of my best friends is vegan diet-wise, but wears leather belts, shoes, and handbags. She just doesn't like to eat meat/dairy/fish products.
greenfairy_87 19th-Dec-2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
Me too. There are too many food staples in my life with milk and eggs.
poisoned_summer 19th-Dec-2012 07:35 pm (UTC)
the thing is, every tiny thing you do, whether it's buying soap and catching a flight or using a straw from mcdonald's is adversely affecting someone somewhere on the planet due to corporate vulturism so i always find it kind of funny when people but especially celebs insist that everything they do is cruelty free because lol it's not really, you just don't realize it
onyxobsidian 19th-Dec-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
she should have had them buy some of Natalie Portman's footware.
laceandskin 19th-Dec-2012 07:07 pm (UTC)
Everytime someone says vegan I think of food, so vegan shoes give me a really strange mental image.
onyxobsidian 19th-Dec-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)

shining_starsxx 19th-Dec-2012 07:19 pm (UTC)
It makes me think of shoes made out of Morning Star products.
devolute 19th-Dec-2012 07:07 pm (UTC)
oh man i super want some cute vintage vegan shoes. finding vegan shoes is such a pain, they always fall apart :(
agatharuncible 20th-Dec-2012 07:59 pm (UTC)
have you checked UK stores? they seem to have a lot of vegan footwear in lots of different designs. it's not always cheap but if you get something that is good it'll last longer.

...good for her?
frenchverbs 19th-Dec-2012 07:10 pm (UTC)
I tried vegan shoes, and didn't care for them. They felt so stiff and plastic-y.
agatharuncible 20th-Dec-2012 08:00 pm (UTC)
idk where you're buying them, but the vegan shoes I've owned have been just like regular shoes.
jinxeh13 21st-Dec-2012 06:59 pm (UTC)
Same. My favorite pair of lace-up boots are vegan, and they're so comfy.
eyduh 19th-Dec-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)
i just want to eat a big juicy hamburger right in front of her raging face and laugh
onyxobsidian 19th-Dec-2012 07:14 pm (UTC)
She doesn't come across as one of those who cares what other people eat, so you go ahead and do that and let us know how that works out for you.
eyduh 19th-Dec-2012 07:19 pm (UTC)
it went wonderful we even had a great conversation about cats

ljubavirakija 19th-Dec-2012 07:14 pm (UTC)
I commend her for sticking to her beliefs.

And, now that's she's a household name, she can request certain things, like those shoes
summerswings 23rd-Dec-2012 05:41 am (UTC)
I can't believe she went from The Princess Diaries to this. She really does seem wonderfully nice though.
arielcharming 19th-Dec-2012 07:14 pm (UTC)
I hate how people who prefer to live a vegan life are treated like "ugh that diva wanted vegan shoes. who the fuck does she think she is?"
hpxstac 19th-Dec-2012 07:52 pm (UTC)
I totally agree. I actually think this is a cool story and good on Annie for sticking to her guns even while filming. I'm a little surprised that she hasn't mentioned it in interviews.
madameapeface 19th-Dec-2012 08:09 pm (UTC)
IKR? What is with the tone of this article? It's like they're desperate to shame her for being a demanding bitch, or something, but can't figure out how to make "anti-cruelty" and "not a hypocrite" sound satisfactorily obnoxious.

They were going to spend thousands having special fancy shoes and costumes made for her anyway, so who gives a fuq?
msloserrific 19th-Dec-2012 08:49 pm (UTC)
Plus, from what I know, this was a huge production with a very large budget. It's doubtful that she's going to bankrupt anybody over a few pairs of vegan shoes.
christoph 19th-Dec-2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
i agree. i came into this post expecting to see comments exactly like that. rme at how defensive people get over other people's diets/material choices.
callme_morbid 20th-Dec-2012 09:25 pm (UTC)
lol i don't get the outrage either. when it's other celebs, ontd usually agrees it's their money so they can do as they please. so i don't get how her choice of vegan shoes is 'extreme'.
reina_ursa 25th-Dec-2012 11:23 am (UTC)
Yeah I see nothing wrong with what she did. Good for her!
