Elementary: Female Watson 'Started as a Joke'

Rob Doherty's choice to pair Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock Holmes with a woman resulted in fall's No. 1 new series, and inclusion in THR's 2012 Rule Breakers portfolio.

"It started out as something of a joke," creator Rob Doherty confesses of his decision to make the Watson in his Sherlock Holmes tale a woman. When he began to research the story's original characters, he came across a handful of experts who had written up psychological assessments of Sherlock; one of them had noted an aversion to women.

"I thought to myself, 'What would make Holmes crazier than taking the figurative rock he has in Watson and making him a woman?' I scribbled it down and then went back to my research," the 38-year-old Elementary showrunner continues. "The more I thought about it, the more I wanted to try it."

The result: casting Asian-American film star Lucy Liu as the first female Watson opposite Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock and an impressive 13.9 million viewers tuning in weekly, making Elementary the No. 1 new series with total viewers this fall. (Among the key 18-to-49 set, the series ranks No. 2 behind only NBC's breakout Revolution.) And come February, the CBS drama -- one of the season's few hits with critics and audiences alike -- will get the coveted post-Super Bowl slot.
The show's stars, Liu, 44, and Miller, 40, still are making sense of the series' success, particularly rewarding because the show colors outside the lines in a way that excites both of them.

"To me, one of the best things you can do in this profession is to take a risk," says Miller, whose co-star plays sober coach to his recovering-addict Sherlock. Liu says the tweak in formula can liberate the story in other ways as well: "There's an endless supply of unpredictability that we can delve into and we can change and add. It will still be a pound cake, but it could be marble, it could be lemon, it could be poppy seed."

I'm so happy this show is in existence. The cast is great. JLM finally has a TV show that won't be swiftly canceled. Lucy Liu is perfect. The two of them are the most adorable things ever when they do press.

It really is true that the best revenge is living well, so I hope the haters are extremely angry that it's wildly successful. STAY MAD

I wish I knew how to photoshop because now I want to put JLM's head on Kirk's body in that gif where Kirk is punching Benedict Cumberbatch in the Trek trailer.

I probably wouldn't have checked Elementary out if it was just another show about two white dudes and their bromance tbh. Casting Lucy is what got me interested, and I'm glad they did because I really love the show so far.

same here

I can guarantee 100% that I wouldn't have given it a second thought before instantly rejecting the idea of watching if Lucy hadn't been cast. Words can't describe how nhf yet another fucking bromance between two whites dudes I am.

same! the Lucy casting got my attention, for sure.

Love this show. Happy it's a success. Still pressed that turning any of these characters into a female could be a joke (or shocking) in 2012, decades after the characters were flippin' rodents.

just saying.

thecanuckian 19th-Dec-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
no! the gay tension between sherlock and watson is a huge part of sherlock lore and i miss it.

I'm enjoying this show, but for some reason I do think it could be better? I think the writing is rather bland. I think the mysteries are like any other. They don't shout 'Sherlock Holmes' mysteries. :/ I'd like to see more intricate cases and cases that don't require the 'police'. Because, Holmes didn't always take cases that had to do with the police.

I think the character development is ace.
rashaka 20th-Dec-2012 11:59 pm (UTC)
So far I think they're coasting on mundane cases, but with so many cop shows there's not a lot of new ways to commit murder under the sun. Since all procedurals are basically the same to me, I don't care.

I did like the recent vault-cracking episode, however. I enjoyed seeing Sherlock being tested.

Something I do like about this show over the BBC version is that the cops aren't completely moronic here. You get the feeling that they'd continue to be useful, at least some of the time, even without Sherlock helping.

Show's the best new one of the season.
and might be the only one along with Arrow that survives..

I have been watching Elementary and love it, particularly the dynamic twixt Holes and Watson. As for people complaining its a bit of a formulaic procedural...The original stories are where the formula for those procedurals come from (and personally it's not like Sherlock's episodes have always been the pinnacle of plotting - wtf was the Hound episode).
ardenture 19th-Dec-2012 11:08 pm (UTC)
No homo, but I find Lucy Liu hot after her PCD dance in Charlie Angels: Full Throttle.
vonlisbon 19th-Dec-2012 11:59 pm (UTC)
lol so I've never seen any of these TV adaptations, but I've read every Sherlock story and it's so hysterical to me how people are acting like this is kind of weird and possibly controversial to have a female Watson. My god, it's not like they made Watson an adolescent leper. Honestly having a Watson who was very sexually explicit or adventurous would be far more of a needless break from the canon than a female one.

Yaaaaas, the best revenge is rating well.
