'To the Wonder' trailer

The ever-mysterious Terrence Malick returns in April with To the Wonder, and based on the first trailer, the film doubles down on everything you either loved or despised about Tree of Life. There are lovingly swooping shots of nature juxtaposed with highly formalized shots of contemporary cityscapes; there are young lovers running through various fields; there is poetical narration which sounds variously like a love poem and a eulogy.

In this case, the narration comes from Javier Bardem, who plays a priest. The film also stars Ben Affleck as a human male, and Rachel McAdams and Olga Kurylenko as two human females who apparently fall in love with Affleck. It pointedly does not star Rachel Weisz. But it does star nature. And isn’t nature in all of us? And aren’t we all therefore united in the divine? And therefore are we not all Rachel Weisz? Anyhow, this looks awesome. Watch the trailer:

everything about this just seems so try hard to be something "important" or "meaningful"
goofusgallant 19th-Dec-2012 06:20 pm (UTC)
It's a Terrence Malick film so that sounds about right.

"The film also stars Ben Affleck as a human male"

Will he pull it off?

ugh ben affleck. i've never liked him as an actor
brokenseas 19th-Dec-2012 05:24 pm (UTC)
The narration in the trailer is probably the only dialogue in the movie.

flashstruck 19th-Dec-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
i've never seen a malick film, but are they all like this? scenery, odd cropped shot of people touching eachother softly and everyone looking sad but pensive?

and of course, no talking apparently?
ms_mmelissa 19th-Dec-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
Yeah, pretty much. Minimal dialogue, lots of voice over and beautiful shots.
near_dark 19th-Dec-2012 05:40 pm (UTC)
Pretty much with the exception of Badlands which is his best film.
zeldafitzgerald 19th-Dec-2012 05:49 pm (UTC)
+1 re: Badlands.

Also, Thin Red Line.
bellwetherr 19th-Dec-2012 06:09 pm (UTC)

bellwetherr 19th-Dec-2012 06:08 pm (UTC)

This looks lovely and very Malick-y.

I hope this is good. I haven't really connected with his stuff except for The New World which is, imo, his most underrated work.

I loved The New World but I don't think I could rewatch it. I remember crying during it though.
ms_mmelissa 19th-Dec-2012 06:14 pm (UTC)
I recently re-watched it and was absolutely taken aback by how much it still affects me emotionally. I think that's probably why it's my favourite of all Malick's films. The rest I can appreciate on a cerebral level, but the stuff in The New World just punches me in the gut.
polarbunny 19th-Dec-2012 06:45 pm (UTC)
SERIOUSLY. I have friends who hated that movie but then I finally watched it and loved it.

i REALLY hope this + oblivion coming out in the same month (in the US at least) gets her a bunch of exposure and she starts getting more/better roles bc she's so amazing in her european films and not shit like hitman and max payne :(

Badlands + The New World

zeldafitzgerald 19th-Dec-2012 05:57 pm (UTC)
Badlands because Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen are perfection.
ficre24 19th-Dec-2012 05:52 pm (UTC)
I'm probably not going to understand this one either, but I'm so excited nonetheless!
Looks like a tumblr/instagram girl's fantasy.
