'Inspired to Act: #26Acts of Kindness to Honor those Lost in Newtown' by Ann Curry

Newtown's heartbreak has a lot of us asking, "What can I do?" Thinking about this, I took to Twitter and asked people to imagine what would happen if all of us committed to 20 acts of kindness to honor each child lost in Newtown. I added, "I'm in. If you are, RT #20Acts."

Tens of thousands of people on Twitter and Facebook not only seized the idea, they increased it to #26Acts, to include the heroic teachers, and are launching acts of kindness big and small all over America. The acts are spreading overseas, including one tweeted from Borneo.

Some changed the hashtag to #26ActsOfKindness, some wanted to increase it to 27, and 28. All good. You are in charge of this wave now.

We are curating some of the acts shared so far, as a way to inspire you, and maybe help heal us all.

Fred Rogers once said that when he saw scary things in the news as a boy, his mother would say, "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping."

Below, find some of the helpers.

Are you in?

this is a good thing

I'd rather hear about things like this than completely irrelevant details about the shooter that seems to be clogging up every media outlet

it's truly sickening how much attention they are giving the shooter and not the victims of the tragedy

everywhere from CNN, FOX, MSNBC....I mean what is the point of interviewing former classmates of the shooter?? or trying to dig up irrelevant interests that he had?? it boggles my mind that the media thinks this is some how relevant to the shooting

tl;dr but in short I just think the media is trying to report ANYTHING at this point it's embarrassing

MTE. Like, the shooter is gone, we will never truly know what made him do this I'd feel better about stories like this (even if I do think a lot of people will short out on this) that's about showing compassion or saying good things about the children and teachers lost.

For that reason I've kept away from televised news but I was hoping that most people would go the Anderson Cooper route and maybe mention the shooters name once, and then keep all personal info rather than creating some kind of notoriety.

I'm sad to hear that this isn't the case because like you said it's not relevant to the case, at all, it's simply being done to keep a story going which is ridiculous.

THANK YOU!! people do things like this because they know they'll get media attention. it's not the only reason but seriously, it's so disgusting!

thats what they did with the james holmes shooting too. he went to my high school and media would come and interview old classmates or neighbors and talk shit about my high school when it was further from the truth.

I just read an interview with his ex-barber. At the end of the interview, the barber said he wished he would have killed him or that he was run over by a bus.

That was just weird to read. I'd rather see the pictures of the sweet children, have tears stream down my face, and hope to change something in this world than to read that he was a "quiet kid" a "good kid" "autistic" "a genius".
