I think peoples comments to this picture are interesting, it reminds me of the documentary 'The Falling Man' when they discussed ethics of posting particular photographs which show people in vulnerable points in their lives. You feel devastated and guilty looking for looking at them, but they represent so much.

These pictures could be iconic for the event later on, especially if America does change its laws on gun control.

Update: It's not 24 year old Ryan Lanza as they were originally reporting, it's his brother, 20 year old Adam Lanza, and it's looking more and more like he pretty much wiped out the majority of his immediate family before going to the school

I coach Tball and they're all this age. I got to Tball and hugged everyone of them today. They were confused as to why I did that but the parents all understood.

Apparently the shooter had his brother's ID so that's why police thought it was Ryan?

I wrote a a letter to my local congressman and will copy-paste it here if anyone wants to steal it to send to their local Representatives.

I and countless other Americans am sickened by the latest public shooting that took the lives of 27 people, many of them children. Public shootings have increased in scope in the past few decades, with 6 of the 12 deadliest public shootings in America occurring in the past decade alone. This is a deplorable and disgusting trend that MUST be stopped. I am writing to you, my local Congressman, to appeal to you to help strengthen our weak and outdated gun control laws. Our gun control laws need to be changed to decrease the ease of access to guns for more unqualified Americans, strengthen the background and psychiatric evaluation process for all applicants, and regulate the types of guns allowed to be sold to people who are not law enforcement or members of the military. There is no reason the tragic event that occurred today should be repeated, destroying the lives of more innocent people. I ask that you stand up today for stricter gun control laws and a safer future for everyone in this country.

pettyscenes Re: from the other post14th-Dec-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
I wrote earlier today and I already got this reply:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for writing my office to express your concerns regarding federal gun control legislation. It's good to hear from you.

As you may know, I strongly defend the Second Amendment and am continually concerned about the erosion of our rights. Generally, I oppose new laws on gun control because often they are repetitive of state law. Most importantly, however, new gun laws end up becoming a burden for the law-abiding citizens of this nation and an infringement on our Second Amendment rights. Many citizens choose to own a firearm for a variety of reasons: for sport, for hunting, or for protection. In my view these are all good and valid reasons.

I often hear that if we only had one more gun-control law on the books the Columbine tragedy could have been avoided. While one can argue from different points of view, I think the comments by Mr. Darrell Scott, father to a victim of the Columbine attack, transcends the sound bites and intricacies of debate. He testified with wisdom before the House Judiciary Committee on May 27, 1999--"No amount of gun laws can stop someone who spends months of planning this type of massacre. The real villain lies within our own hearts."

Unfortunately, many in Congress have pushed gun control as a means to reduce crime. Ironically, many of these people are the same ones who consistently oppose any attempt to get tough on crime. I'm convinced that we must firmly punish criminals, especially repeat offenders who commit most of the violent crimes. It's time that we finally hold offenders responsible for their actions instead of infringing upon the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens.

Again, thanks for keeping me updated on your concerns regarding gun control. Rest assured, I will continue my defense of the Second Amendment. To keep track of what I am doing in Washington, I encourage you to visit my website at www/house.gov/shimkus and sign up for my weekly e-mail newsletter. I look forward to continuing to hear from you and benefiting from your experiences and opinions.

Sincerely,

JOHN SHIMKUS
Member of Congress

garamsythe Re: from the other post14th-Dec-2012 09:50 pm (UTC)
"no amount of gun laws" smh. yeah, no law can literally stop someone in their tracks, but the point is to make it as difficult as possible before it escalates to killing 20 children.

fuck this douche.
josiefier Re: from the other post14th-Dec-2012 09:43 pm (UTC)
Thank you for this. Just sent it to mine too b/c I'm definitely not in the right frame of mind to put it in my own words.

what the fuck

I think they just can't locate them for questioning, they aren't actually missing.
yurasama_love 14th-Dec-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
Whoa, whoa, what?!
jello404 14th-Dec-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
I hate the American government, how its ran and its policy.I hate that Obama doesn't have the power to shut the NRA and other right wing republican parties down. I hate that WE THE PEOPLE really don't have a say in this matter. The NRA always wins.
At this point the patients are running the psyc ward. That's the state of our government.
Funny thing is,here on the south side of Chicago,30 people get shot here on a weekend. Most of them are children. Little brown children and no one gives a fuck. Gun violence is a serious fucking problem and its hurting everyone and I wish people would wake up and realize that! But America is stuck in this militarized call of duty and Jesus mindset.
vehiclesshockme 14th-Dec-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
I like that Obama mentioned the gun violence in Chicago in his speech to be honest since most of the country seems unaware of it or doesn't give a shit about it. It's gotten so much worse this year.
jello404 14th-Dec-2012 09:45 pm (UTC)
Exactly. We needed somethin like this to happen because no one paid attention to 30 people being murdered in one weekend. Or the fact that a shootout JUST happened at Evanston township high school a few days ago. The media is disgusting. They load your head up with bullshit but when it comes down to important ahit,no one knows anything. It's terrifying.
Oddly enough I learn more about what's going on in te US from BBC an Aljezera and other foreign news than I do on local.
winniechili 14th-Dec-2012 10:01 pm (UTC)
WE THE PEOPLE do have power. It's just that THEY THE PEOPLE WITH A SHIT TON OF MONEY have more.
thishollywood 14th-Dec-2012 10:12 pm (UTC)
u mean stuff like this?

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-57500026-504083/19-people-wounded-in-chicago-shooting-attacks-overnight-including-13-within-30-minutes-police-say/

i think its interesting that ppl r like .... giving side eye & sayin only white men do shootings like this. does it "not count" when it is suspected gang violence? i would still call drivebys "spree shootings" tbh.

hmmm but then wouldn't he have seen that it was a school his mom worked at? seems awfully level headed
frklphace 14th-Dec-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
so they reported initially the shooter was 20, then retracted that, said the shooter was 24 and still got the info wrong?

i hate early stories bc the information is jumbled and wrong all the time.
jigglemypuff 14th-Dec-2012 09:40 pm (UTC)
Originally they said it was the father of a student at the school. That was totally off. I figured if he was 20, he didn't have a kid old enough for school.
