omg m2

i liked all the inclusions so much. lbr it would have been so short and boring as shit if it was just bilbo's pov

Same. I'm rereading the book and even though it's short so much shit happens. And that's just the things we see. I feel like the inclusions made it more rounded, I enjoyed seeing what Gandalf was up to and the build-up to the Necromancer storyline, I am 100X more excited for it now.

OMG YESSS

i'm glad they included stuff like thorin's story and the goblin battle bc all it is is bilbo getting kidnapped, jack shit, gollum, then he finds the others in the space of like... 10 pages

they don't actually elaborate on things like that and i loved it. the extension is totally for the $$$$$$ but it's blatant fan service too.

I don't think it is for the $$$ and fan service, but more like building up the background stories to make the intentions of characters clearer. Like Thorin's story makes him who he is, and that would play out throughout the trilogy and come to closure in a full circle at the end.

Riddles in the Dark with Gollum was actually a very important chapter IMO and a fabulously done at that, and it brings back plenty of themes for LOTR (like how it was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand when it comes to Gollum, and how it affected the future in LOTR).

Since Tolkien meant for people who read the Hobbit to continue on to the Hobbit (thus inclusions in Appendices at the back of LOTR to include events that were happening at the same time), it is only complete for PJ and team to revisit them and bring them to life. Because what happens in the books do not always translate well to film.
