I've only been watching this show this season and I know they're trying to eventually get to meeting Ted's wife, but why did they make it known that he meets her at Barney & Robin's wedding?

It was this whole big drawn out "Who's getting married?!" thing. It started out that he met her on the day of A wedding. Then they showed us that it was commitment-phobic Barney getting married. And then there was the "mystery" of who was Barney's bride.
