Joseph Morgan on the 'Bloody' midseason finale + Candice Accola on Caroline's feelings for Damon

Klaus better watch out: On this Thursday’s midseason finale of The Vampire Diaries, his hybrid Tyler comes after him with the power of his wolf pack. The Original may not see the attack coming because the beautiful Caroline has been distracting him. But is Klaus really as in the dark as he seems? Has he turned the tables and charmed the blonde vamp for real? And how will he retaliate when all is revealed? Below, Joseph Morgan tackles our burning questions about this week’s “bloody” episode.

TVLINE | Everyone, from Caroline to Tyler, is playing Klaus this season. He can’t possibly be that clueless to what’s going on, can he?
[Laughs] I don’t think so, no. It seems like that, doesn’t it? Like everything’s going on right under his nose and he’s oblivious to it all. And there is a certain amount of distraction that’s come from wooing Caroline and having that somewhere near the forefront of his mind. But all of this deception is going to come out in the open very soon. It’s likely to all come to a head.

TVLINE | He’s a smart guy, so do you think maybe he’s known all along that something’s been going on and he’s playing along with it?
There’s certainly room for that. That’s an interesting idea. Even if he didn’t know everything, there’s absolutely room for the idea that he could have had an inkling of it. He’s been around the block a few times. He’s seen a lot of people trying to one up him. So yeah, I think you’re right. It would be crazy to think that he had no idea any of this was happening right on his doorstep.

TVLINE | What’s his reaction when all of this comes out into the open?
It’s not good. [Laughs] It’s not good for anyone who’s in his way. It’s bloody. It’s incredibly bloody. He won’t take it lying down. He won’t be like, “Oh, that’s OK. Nevermind.” He’ll feel there’s some retribution needed.

TVLINE | Is there a part of Klaus that’s a little proud of Tyler despite the fact that he’s trying to take him down? Here’s this hybrid he created and raised, so to speak, who’s now grown up and is taking power.
That’s a really interesting question. I have not been asked that before. I think possibly, yes. I would like to think so. It’s a bold move and one that Klaus might make himself in that situation. I would like to think there is, but that doesn’t mean he’ll go any easier on Tyler when he does find out. But I like that idea very much!

TVLINE | As powerful as Klaus is, how can he possibly come out on top against Tyler and his new hybrid pack? They have the advantage in terms of numbers.
They do, but they’re pups, really. He’s been around for a thousand years. There is a tremendous amount of them, and there is only one of him, but… I really don’t want to spoil it for you because it’s so awesome. [Laughs] And I don’t use that word lightly.

TVLINE | In the meantime, he’s been spending a lot of time with Caroline. Do you believe that he truly loves her? Or is he just looking for companionship?
He’s certainly infatuated with her. I believe that he loves the chase. He’s been around for so long now, it’s fascinating for him that she doesn’t just fall into his arms. It’s a spark of interest. Let’s not forget he’s half-werewolf, so there’s something of the hunt to this, as well. But I don’t know. I think there is [the] potential that he loves her. I really don’t know how it’s going to end, so I’ll be as interested as you guys to find out. We’ve seen in Episode 7 that he does have the potential to be a nice guy for a moment and to open up to her and seemingly be considerate and compassionate. But he’s also capable of utterly terrible things. For them to work, he would need to compromise a lot of who he has been for the last thousand years, and I’m not sure he would be willing to do that. He’s pretty stubborn.

TVLINE | And if he finds out she’s been playing him, is that enough to turn him off her?
I don’t know. It’s possibly all part of the game and the hunt. He’s just one guy. He understands the terrible things he’s done, and why Before Sunsetsomeone might find the need to mislead him. But I feel like it’s all a bit of a game to him. His life is a game, and he plays to win. Something like that may not necessarily deter him — it may just require a counter move.

TVLINE | How will Stefan and Klaus’ partnership progress in this week’s episode?
We’re going to see them face off again. We’re going to see a tentative agreement struck up between them. As we’ve seen before, it always seems that one of them breaks whatever agreement they have or one betrays the other. There is this deep-seated friendship that goes all the way back to the ’20s. Klaus isn’t really the one who’s changed; Stefan is the one who’s become a different person and changed who he was. It’ll be interesting to see how that progresses. Klaus vents some of his feelings to Stefan in the midseason finale. And when I say “vents,” I don’t mean in an angry way. He has a really honest moment where he tells it like it is to Stefan. For anyone who likes that dynamic between the two characters, that’s a really nice moment.

The Vampire Diaries: Candice Accola on the Show's First Holiday Episode and Caroline's Feelings on Klaus, Damon and More

The Vampire Diaries airs a holiday-centered episode this Thursday, as Caroline (Candice Accola) finds herself wrapped up in even more of the conflict brewing between Klaus and the hybrids he doesn’t realize are planning to rebel against him.

IGN TV: This week’s episode is the first time you guys have had a holiday-themed one, right?

Candice Accola: Yeah, the first time. I’m so excited because I love the holidays, and the set was just beautiful. I think that the viewers are going to notice all the hard work that our art and prop departments put into it.

IGN: And it sounds like there’s some big conflict involving Klaus this week.

Accola: There’s a plan for taking down Klaus, trying to pull him back, because he’s just not happy. So yeah, everyone is entering into another opportunity to take down Klaus. However, the gang is not communicating very well. So it’s everyone trying to make the move, but then just not necessarily clicking in what they think is the right way to do it. Everyone feels that their way is the right way, which obviously does not a team make. So everything could go absolutely perfect, as it always does on the show… [Laughs] or this could be the first time in four years where there’s a hiccup!

IGN: For quite awhile now with Klaus, there’s been the fact that he’s got this infatuation with Caroline. Might this play into these new plans?

Accola: Caroline is very well aware that she is able to use herself as -- one my lines that I really loved is when Caroline goes, “Why do I always have to be Klaus bait?” And it’s true! It’s funny. Klaus is just enchanted with her. He also knows she’s playing him, but I think he likes that she’s playing him because he’s still a step ahead of her. But it gives him attention and a game that I think a character like him really wants. She’s definitely involved, but she still has an arm’s length between them. She’s definitely not on his side.

IGN: When I mentioned I was going to be speaking to you on Twitter, there were quite a few fans clearly all about Klaus and Caroline as a couple. Despite Klaus’s history, what do you think when you hear, “Yeah, get them together”?

Accola: I think I understand it because you take such a dark character and you finally see the light in them when they’re in love. So for a character like Klaus, he’s so dark, but he’s starts to become genuine and show humanity. He just loves her, and it’s that simple. I think people are so excited about the potential for Klaus and Caroline because ultimately I feel like it becomes as if Caroline saved him. That’s how I see it, if they were to get together and he just fully lets down his guard and is able to trust. It’s like she saved him and is bringing humanity into his life, which is so romantic -- but so not healthy and not realistic! [Laughs] But I can see the romance in that. I can see the cover of the romance novel already.

IGN: Will we see more about how Caroline might feel regarding whether she’d want to be cured of being a vampire, if she actually has the opportunity?

Accola: That was slightly touched on in last week’s episode, and I think thematically that question will run through the following episodes, through the rest of the season. I think there’s potential for a lot of inner debates, and that’s something that will be explored as we find out more about the cure.

IGN: Caroline is not the biggest fan of Damon Salvatore. They did bring up in the past episode some of the history between Damon and Caroline in passing, but it’s pretty dark if you think back on Season 1 and everything he put her through. He even came close to killing her. So can you see why it would be very difficult for her to ever fully turn around on him?

Accola: I think Caroline has every right not to have any respect for Damon. What I love about how it’s all coming out now is that it’s really reflective on the fact that Caroline was at a really weak place in her life in Season 1. She just so desperately wanted to be loved, and that’s something that will always be rooted in that character - her need for acceptance and to be loved. But what’s different is that now she loves herself. At that point, she did not love herself, she did not respect herself. Anyone that would give her an eyelash bat of attention, she clung onto them. So she clung onto Damon, and he just dug her even deeper in the hole that she was digging herself. He used her and mentally, physically and emotionally abused her. She didn’t get mad because she didn’t feel strong enough yet.

But now, a couple years later and now that she’s grown into herself and feels strong physically and mentally -- and she feels loved and she knows what that means now -- she’s like, “Oh, yeah. That guy? Guess what? I have the balls to say now that he’s an a**hole! And I have every right to say that he’s an a**hole, and he deserves to be called an a**hole!” She does not feel guilty about it, and I love that. She shouldn’t have to. She’s going to love Elena, but it doesn’t change the way that Damon treated Caroline. I think she can support Elena knowing that even if Damon’s changed and he’s really loving her, it doesn’t change what he did to Caroline. I love that she owns that, and she’s fully okay with saying, “Screw you.”

IGN: On the flip side, has it been nice for you to explore this friendship between Stefan and Caroline? He was kind of her vampire mentor, and now they have a very nice friendship amongst all the madness on this show.

Accola: I love the friendship between Stefan and Caroline. I really thought that these characters would never have anything in common. In the pilot, again, she’s like, “New guy! I need attention,” and batted her eyelashes until they practically fell off. He didn’t give her anything! She’s peppy and happy and all excited; she puts her foot in her mouth constantly, and only now is she starting to think of the repercussions. She gets very upset over flower arrangements! And Stefan is just the complete opposite. He’s much more dignified and very serious. He’s humble, and he can be very quiet. He’s very internal, and Caroline is very external. I never thought that these characters would have any sort of chemistry or anything to talk about. And yet in Season 2 they’ve proved that they have so much more in common, and I can see that now. I think it also shows why Stefan had such a great friendship with Lexi. And I love that Julie [Plec] has mentioned that that’s how she feels that Caroline and Stefan’s friendship is growing into a new version of what he had with Lexi.

IGN: Going into the break, should we expect some of the usual Vampire Diaries twists and turns by the end of the holiday episode?

Accola: Oh, no. Everything turns out great. Breaking news! We end up building gingerbread houses and singing Christmas carols and Hanukkah songs around the dreidel and Christmas tree. That’s how the episode ends.

IGN: That’s a huge spoiler, Candice. I can’t believe you just said that.

Accola: Yeah, and that’s it! That’s what happens. It ends with snowflakes and them feeding the homeless. We are awesome people, and that’s how it ends.

IGN: Then you turn towards the camera and say, “Happy Holidays!”

Accola: Exactly!

The Vampire Diaries: "O Come, All Ye Faithful" airs Thursday, December 13th at 8pm on The CW.

I spoke to Accola about this episode – the last one until the show returns in January – and Caroline’s ever-turbulent relationships with Klaus, Damon and more.

is that from Supernatural?
kattikus 13th-Dec-2012 02:32 am (UTC)
Ok I watched this WHOLE series, beginning until now, over the last 2 weeks and I really don't get the Delana hate. I think they're hot together. /confused
rocksaltme 13th-Dec-2012 02:49 am (UTC)
It's the Elena part of it that I don't like.
oldgurl 13th-Dec-2012 03:05 am (UTC)
Elena's such a flop character (Nina's weak acting doesn't help either).
sarshine 13th-Dec-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
See idgi. I really enjoy her... aside from when she was doing all that whining about being a vampire.
rocksaltme 13th-Dec-2012 03:18 am (UTC)
Yep. I do not understand why all the other characters still like her.
Ugh her acting. Staring into space looking confused and constipated doesn't exactly draw me into the scene.
myroomiswhite88 13th-Dec-2012 03:31 am (UTC)
Surprisingly I like her as Katherine though
oldgurl 13th-Dec-2012 03:40 am (UTC)
I guess she does "idgaf vamp" better than angsty teenager.
sarshine 13th-Dec-2012 03:12 am (UTC)
I LOVE them together. They've grown so much together over the seasons and when you watch them back to back I think you can see that.
kattikus 13th-Dec-2012 03:38 am (UTC)
Yes, agreed.

I don't get the moaning about how Damon treated Caroline and yet people stan for Stefan and Caroline, Stefan was a serial killer lol.

Throughout the whole first Season I was like like wtf everyone in this show kills people constantly and no one cares?? Then by season 2/3 it's like meh, that's just how shit rolls.
shunda84 13th-Dec-2012 03:32 am (UTC)
I think it's people who either hate Damon or Elena separately. I don't hate Elena, but the way she's treated Damon over the seasons & how she always chose Stefan turned me off from Delena.

This season is slowly bringing my love back for them. I still can't stand Elena though. She's too whiny for my taste. Maybe that will change if they keep her with Damon this season.
bunny_lita 13th-Dec-2012 04:05 am (UTC)
I just think Damon is the worst and the stuff they're doing this year to wipe away all the terrible stuff he's done to make Delena work is pissing me off.
crazyventures 13th-Dec-2012 04:16 am (UTC)
I don't get it either most of the time tbh

I just want them to end the damn triangle once and for all. I feel like no one likes it either way. Stefan is such a fun character when he's not being dragged down by it
brightstarmara 13th-Dec-2012 08:15 am (UTC)
It's the chemistry between the two actors. Because the storytelling with those two characters... THe more you look into it, the more it makes your toes curl.
teh_corrupted 13th-Dec-2012 02:45 am (UTC)
I just want to hug her for everything she said about Caroline and Damon.
myroomiswhite88 13th-Dec-2012 02:47 am (UTC)
Maybe it's just me but if I was Caroline I'd take klaus and get the fuck out mystic falls , move to Paris or some shit and ride that hybrid dick for at least a decade . Fuck alll y'all

The last couple eps have been enjoyable but the season is kind of a mess tbh

Reading this just convinced that mommy lockwood is a goner after this episode.
m_pendulum 13th-Dec-2012 03:30 am (UTC)
I used to love Caroline, but it literally seems like the only role she plays is to be the in-universe vampire damsel/love interest.
shunda84 13th-Dec-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
Caroline's hate for Damon is totally justified. He treated her like trash in Season 1.

However, her hate for Delena is annoying. I just want to tell her to stfu & mind her own business. She should probably worry about her dying relationship with Tyler & her fondness for Klaus aka the biggest monster on the show. It's Elena's choice at the end of the day. She stans way too hard for Stelena. It's almost embarrassing.

Delena & Stelena are both dysfunctional relationships. Both brothers like a girl that just so happens to look like a carbon copy of Katherine, their other love from the 19th century. Add the fact that they are both old enough to be her great, great grandfather & the creepy factor just keeps growing.

Call me cynical but there is nothing epic about loving an undead vampire who's primary instinct is to kill & drink human blood. That being said, I can appreciate a love story that's well written. Neither of these are. There's so many holes in both stories. They both had potential but were ruined by Plec & Co imo. Idk if either can be completely fixed at this point.

I do like the Delena scenes lately. I ain't ashamed to say it.

I sorta love that she is just nhf Klaus/Caroline because then every time it's hinted at on screen it's even more amusing to me when I remember how she's like lol no.

And I agree with her about how Caroline feels towards Damon even though I get the feeling it'll be turned around as like she's just being bitchy to Elena. When Elena brought up her sleeping with Damon in the last episode I was like girl, please. She thought he was a hot guy not some homicidal vampire that would go on to compel/feed on her and nearly kill her. Damon was not a nice guy in S1, damn. He owned that shit too...stop retconning everything.

*Sigh*

I used to love this show so much and it pains me to say this, but I do hope it gets cancelled very soon.

The writers just don't know what story to come up with anymore.
brightstarmara 13th-Dec-2012 08:09 am (UTC)
I love that she owns that, and she’s fully okay with saying, “Screw you.”

Yeah....no. Because they had her appologize for saying something milder...
cherriedpie 13th-Dec-2012 01:34 pm (UTC)
Caroline is one of the characters in the show that has shown some character development. She has grown so much since season 1 and is a total heroine in every way. Sometimes she even outshines the female lead because she's so good at what she does - I really look forward to her scenes with Klaus all the time because the two of them have great chemistry.
duckyzu 13th-Dec-2012 02:19 pm (UTC)
I love that Candince says what she really think about Klaus/Damon but I especially LOVE what she said about Damon.
mjspice 13th-Dec-2012 02:36 pm (UTC)
Errgh this series has been weak this season.
