Anne Hathaway Finds the Brouhaha About Her Crotch Shot ‘Sad’

Anne Hathaway

A pervy upskirt shot of underwearless Anne Hathaway getting out of a limo at a New York premiere of Les Miserables has been making the rounds on that beautiful formless mass of the collective human id that we call the Interwebz. This morning on the TODAY show, she responded eloquently to host/human toejam Matt Lauer, who leered: "Seen a lot of you lately." Guh-ross.

She replied:

"It was obviously an unfortunate incident. It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment, and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I'm sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies the sexuality of unwilling participants. Which brings us back to Les Mis [...] So lets get back to Les Mis."

The whole idea is that she was playing a character who truthfully wouldn't have eaten for 13 days either. And maybe it wasn't that hard for her. After a while, actresses fall into a mode where losing weight is just a job requirement. It's not up to her to alter her own truths around the triggers of other people. She gave honest answers.

And you have no way of knowing whether or not I've had an eating disorder. Not all sufferers have the same triggers, or any triggers at all.

I'm 5 years recovered, I have no triggers, but I work with people every day who would see this and then think "oh okay, I can eat two squares of dried oatmeal paste a day and look like this." (and I might have when I was in that place) That's very obvious.

She was bragging because she wants to get an Oscar, that's what it comes down to. They asked about her losing weight, she could have been general.

I really don't see the problem with saying something that's true. It probably wasn't all that hard to starve for 13 days if she just reminded herself of her Oscar chances. She gained 10 lbs for The Devil Wears Prada and lost it in a week when the director decided that Anne's character shouldn't start out at that weight. It's easy for her. She shouldn't have to lie about that if she's asked. Not everyone should be expected to pay lip service to eating disorders and weight issues. Not everyone has them. Anne doesn't seem to.
