Jenni Rivera: A Champion of Women On the Way to Becoming the "Latina Oprah"!

Jenni was on the cusp of attaining her dream to become a well known name in the American entertainment industry. With a hugely successful recording career and reality television program behind her, the 43-year-old mother of five had just signed to star in her own comedy sitcom for ABC.

That dream ended Sunday when the plane Rivera was traveling in crashed in a mountainous region of Mexico. All on board were killed according to reports.

"She said to me: 'People don't really know me [in America], and that's going to change,'" said Lee Hernandez, deputy editor of Latina magazine, who interviewed Rivera earlier in 2012.

Rivera had sold more than 15 million albums worldwide throughout her career and was a household name in Mexico and to Spanish speaking communities throughout the United States.

Rivera was one of the biggest stars of banda, a brass-based, percussive form of Spanish-language pop music invented in northern Mexico but played heavily throughout the American Southwest.

"She was the number one woman in an industry controlled by men," Peter Castro, of People magazine told Access Hollywood Live. Castro went as far as to liken Rivera to singer Adele for her performances of songs that often explored the tragic aspects of her own life.

By the time Rivera was 16 she was married and had given birth to her first daughter. A victim herself of physical abuse during that marriage, her daughter was sexually abused by her first husband who was eventually sentenced to life in prison for the crime in 2007. Rivera went on to marry two more times, had four more children and was most recently wed to the former major-league pitcher Esteban Loaiza. The couple divorced in the fall.

In 2010 she was named spokesperson for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and founded the Jenni Rivera Love Foundation, which offered support services to single mothers and victims of both domestic and sexual abuse.

There appeared to be nothing fake or phony about Jenni Rivera, who spoke openly about her life and recalled to CNN in 2010 that she once sold cans for scrap metal and helped at her family's flea market stand during her adolescence in Los Angeles.

"Staying defeated, crying and suffering was not an option," she said to CNN of her life's tragedies. "I had to get off my feet, dust myself off and press on. That's what I want to teach my daughters."

"I Love Jenni," a televised reality show on Telemundo's mun2 cable channel began airing in 2011 and followed Rivera as she took her life on the road and juggled the demands of stardom and everyday family life. She also was a judge on the TV show, "La Voz... Mexico" ("The Voice, Mexico"), to which she was en route to continue filming when the plane crash occurred.

"She told me she wanted to be the Latina Oprah," said Hernandez. "She wanted to have her own talk show. Becoming known to American audiences was the next big thing for her."

With the announcement of the sitcom in development at ABC, that dream was finally within reach. The family-based comedy was to star Rivera as a strong, single Latina woman struggling to deal with what life throws at her.

Hernandez says her loss cannot be underestimated, particularly to Latinas: "She was one of the biggest stars in the Latina community, our readers are so saddened by the news of her death. They are devastated. And the reason they are so sad is because she was a survivor already. Every single drama you could ever imagine she survived. So for her to go down in the plane crash after surviving everything she went through, and for empowering Latina's to look at their obstacles as something they can overcome is a big tragedy for her audience."

blooms_lady 10th-Dec-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)

filmfreakfranco 10th-Dec-2012 10:26 pm (UTC)
I know people keep saying she was an awful woman/mother on here but I found her entertaining and I liked that she did a lot for her fans and charities and never wanted the media to be there to witness it.
isntdaveone 10th-Dec-2012 10:34 pm (UTC)
IA.
clarelove 10th-Dec-2012 10:35 pm (UTC)
What's the story? I don't even know who is she per se, I just have heard of her and I think that dying the way she did is the worst way to go.
isntdaveone 10th-Dec-2012 10:41 pm (UTC)
without bashing her, she wasn't a good mom.
filmfreakfranco 10th-Dec-2012 10:43 pm (UTC)
Her ex husband raped her daughter and Jenni's youngest sister, her current husband who she filed for divorce from is allegedly having an affair with another daughter of hers.

and iirc one of her sons was arrested for something

magic_lenna 10th-Dec-2012 10:28 pm (UTC)
This is so sad, I still can't believe it. Such a horrible way to die :(
sanditar 10th-Dec-2012 10:32 pm (UTC)
This is very sad, she was very hardworking and lively woman. I don't care for her music but I really enjoyed her on interviews and chats that she did for tv and stuff. RIP.
Also I just watched for like a minute yesterday tv and I hated how they were milking this tragedy on La Voz Mexico, I really dislike this part of showbiz.
lilacbloom 10th-Dec-2012 10:50 pm (UTC)
I agree

They should have cancelled yesterday's La Voz México and waited until next Sunday for the homage.

It was so tacky to exploit the other coaches and her pupils' pain mere THREE hours after her remains had been found.

isntdaveone 10th-Dec-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
it was way too soon for them to do that.

they should've waited until next Sunday.
anitakkkat 10th-Dec-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
It's Televisa, they are always tacky.
nothingcleva89 10th-Dec-2012 10:35 pm (UTC)
They used to (and I guess still do) play bandada in the Mexican restaurant I frequented in my college town, and that's when I first heard of her. She seemed like a strong woman, and I am sorry to see her go.
blooms_lady 10th-Dec-2012 10:36 pm (UTC)
Sad.. was watching coverage of this on univision.. i can't believe some of the pictures they showed on Primer Impacto..it seemed like it has like pieces of her hair where they found the pieces of the plane... So sad and her kids, especially the one she never made peace with... and all these reporters and artist like Paulina breaking down.. So sad, may she rest in piece. ..Also so weird ! Was watching Selena on Telemundo yesterday when this story broke...so scary.

isntdaveone 10th-Dec-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
Univision & Televisa was the worst.

they were showing her clothes scattered everywhere, her burnt drivers license, etc.
anitakkkat 10th-Dec-2012 10:42 pm (UTC)
Ugh, Lopez Dóriga was tweeting all of those pictures, and then he said she was like Cinderella or something like that when he posted a picture of her shoe.
magic_lenna 10th-Dec-2012 10:43 pm (UTC)
They just showed a piece of hair and scalp in a branch. What's wrong with people????? I can't even.
blooms_lady 10th-Dec-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
I know..and like bloody god knows what on the floor...Me and my mom were like, are they seriously showing this right now? Her hair? So sad.
groundcrown 10th-Dec-2012 10:47 pm (UTC)
so tacky jfc
die2nitelive4ev 10th-Dec-2012 11:05 pm (UTC)
I grew up in Spain and as a Brit where the BBC are very very polite I was so shocked how the front papers would have bloody corpses of the frontpage.
anitakkkat 10th-Dec-2012 10:43 pm (UTC)
people on twitter are the worst #masasquerosoqueJenniRivera is TT in Mexico.
tucker 10th-Dec-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
tbh I was really surprised one of her songs didn't shoot up to #1 on itunes after the news broke, but now they had one of her albums promoted on the front page..
die2nitelive4ev 10th-Dec-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
I find it tacky that record companies start re-releasing stuff after someone passes, people can download it if they want it anyway these days
isntdaveone 10th-Dec-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
and when they discount it down to 99cents to get bigger profits.
die2nitelive4ev 10th-Dec-2012 10:53 pm (UTC)
I dont know much about her, her family and the situation but is there any rumours in the Mexican/American press about it being cartel related? UK media have just detailed her life and have little interest in anything else.
tinydevastation 10th-Dec-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
I've seen some people on FB say she must've pissed off someone in the Zeta cartel etc etc. But I haven't seen the press link it to that just yet.
isntdaveone 10th-Dec-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
she had told Raul De Molina from El Gordo y La Flaca that she was living in fear of her life every weekend she would travel to perform shows in Mexico. Apparently she was receiving threats by the drug gangs there.

she was setting aside money every month for her kids just in case.

and she had said that she thought her phones were being tapped.
die2nitelive4ev 10th-Dec-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
Oh my god. When I first saw the headline about a missing plane without knowing who she was I immediately thought cartel then I read about her and was unsure. Is her being famous enough of a reason to be targeted?
junemeaugust 11th-Dec-2012 07:13 am (UTC)
I heard on the radio that some of the threats that she received said something along the lines of "If you try to leave Mexico [for good], we'll make sure Mexico doesn't let you leave". Like she told Raul she wanted an LA job so she could stop performing the weekend shows...and she had just gotten that ABC pilot...idk it's all just too :/
fotografa 11th-Dec-2012 05:21 am (UTC)
As soon as my mom heard the new she said that maybe a bomb was placed on the plane. Sadly, it would not surprise me.

tinydevastation 10th-Dec-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
I've seen some conspiracy theories up on FB already. I cannot with these people. It's a horrible tragedy and some people have no respect.
x_noisekisses 10th-Dec-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
i don't blame people for the conspiracy theories, some shady things had been going on recently
isntdaveone 10th-Dec-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
the area where she would perform were drug-controlled or something, so i understand people thinking they had something to do with it.
tinydevastation 10th-Dec-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
Oh I know. But some are saying she must have deserved it if she pissed off a cartel with her music and whatnot. I think that's fucked up.
isntdaveone 10th-Dec-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
i think it was just pilot error or mechanical failure.
x_noisekisses 10th-Dec-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
this whole thing is so heartbreaking :( oh jenni
idreaminargyle 10th-Dec-2012 11:03 pm (UTC)
descansa en paz :'(
