Kate Middleton 'must feel terrible' over nurse suicide, says UK doctor's union

Kate Middleton is likely feeling very upset in the wake of a nurse suicide, experts said Saturday. The spokesman for the British Medical Association, a registered trade union for UK doctors, believes the death of King Edward VII nurse, Jacintha Saldanha, must be weighing on the pregnant Duchess of Cambridge. "Kate must feel terrible. Of course this is not her fault, but she is now being linked with a suicide in people’s minds," the Express quotes Dr. Tom Frewin as saying.

Kate Middleton was being treated at King Edward VII Hospital earlier this week when a pair of Aussie DJs prank called the hospital posing as Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles seeking details about the Duchess' condition. “Medical staff should never disclose confidential information to anyone and people who answer the phone should have the correct training and not be put in this invidious position," Ferwin said suggesting HIPPA-like regulations be put into place in the UK. "The secretary of state should put together a set of measures to prevent this happening again; to any patient, not just a member of the Royal Family."

Kate Middleton spent three nights at King Edward VII Hospital in London where she was treated for acute morning sickness. Experts predict, due to the oddity of the circumstances, the Duchess of Cambridge will not hold onto long-term guilt or responsibility for the tragic outcome.

It was a recording. It wasn't live. The "we didn't expect to get through"-excuse is bullshit. Also? They could have hung up once they realised that they were being sent through. Also, a prank like this always had the potential to get someone fired should they succeed, so it could never ever have been funny.

Doubt they thought as far as "This could get someone into serious shit" which is why I think they deserve vitriol. Besides, how would heckling a pregnant woman who's been admitted to the hospital ever be funny anyway?

this! they chose to put it on the air, they knew exactly what they were doing

Some people have demented perceptions on what's funny, unfortunately.

exactly

I don't get it. There are millions of prank shows all around the world, where people get the shit scared out of them and even sometimes attacked by actors in order to perform a "funny" prank. NO ONE EVER COMPLAINS. I've always thought those shows are in poor taste, but people complaining only because the Dutchess of Cambrige was the target and a nurse killed herself for, maybe, other reasons than the prank? I think it's a little ridiculous considering the million other people who could have been injured or harm in the other shows.

I never find this type of pranks funny. I do complain about mean spirited "pranks", but generally go out of my way to avoid them. Frankly, I think we need to start to say "No! Stop!" to them, and it's gotta start somewhere.

Yes, but I think it's rather hypocritical to start a grand scale complaint against these pranks only because a BIG NAME PERSON was the target of it. I would have started with the ridiculous brazilian prank. How about someone got killed in that one? Say, someone with a heart disease? It could have happened, and yet no one complains because the victims are nobody and no one got hurt, so it's "cool".

I'm sorry, what Brazilian prank?

And they targeted middle aged people too (who may not be fit and healthy), so I don't see why this didn't raise public outrage but the - way more - bland prank against Kate Middleton made people want to cut some throats.

Okay... That "prank" is horrifying. Uuuugh.

But the thing about the Kate Middleton prank? It's not bland. They were trying to get her medical information. That is, no matter who it is, never "bland".
nekonekox 11th-Dec-2012 02:08 pm (UTC)
I mean bland in comparison, considering that the only thing they can do is release that information against giving her a heart attack, as was the case of the Brazilian prank. I would agree with you if Kate were a Jane Doe like most people targeted in these pranks. However, she's not, and I think it was a good exercise in personal security, because they need to make sure things like this don't happen and that they can't happen. Imagine it were terrorists instead of pranksters making the call. That's what needs to be taken into consideration in this case. Terrorists and criminals are not going to be sorry because the nurse who connected them killed herself over it, nor are they just going to publish the information they get.

In this case, it turned out not to be so bad. But what if she'd been having a miscarriage?

Also, the reason this prank is so bad to me isn't only about Kate and her medical information, it's also about the (in any other case) anonymous nurses whose jobs and possibly even all their future employment would be at risk.

But I agree, that Brazilian "prank" could easily give someone a heart attack and was frankly down right dangerous. Imagine if a claustrophobic person who can only deal with elevators when they actually move ended up in it...?
