Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera's airplane missing

jenni-rivera

MEXICO — Authorities in northern Mexico are confirming that a small plane carrying Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera has gone missing after taking off from the city of Monterrey.

Jorge Domene, spokesman for the Nuevo Leon state government, told Milenio television on Sunday that the plane left Monterrey about 3:30 a.m after a concert there. It was bound for Toluca, which is located outside Mexico City.
Domene says a search for the plane was launched early Sunday, with helicopters from the local civilian protection agency flying over the state. He says seven people are believed to be aboard the U.S.-registered Learjet 25.
The 43-year-old who was born and raised in Long Beach, California, is known for her interpretations of Mexican regional music known as nortena and banda.

(So sad especially since she's known to travel with her kids often. Hoping she's okay. Didn't want to tag this death because it isn't confirmed yet.)

I would never ever fly in a private plane. 9.5 times out of 10 they're the ones you hear about going down.

RIP. :(

At least not when you are famous. Can think of 6 celebs off the top of my head to die in private plane crashes :s

Not to mention the plane crash with Travis Barker and DJ AM. That one still creeps me out.

I can't believe both of them made it out of that one.

That was horrible.

They're really not bad tbh. I grew up going on a tiny 4-seater Cessna that my dad flies and accidents are pretty rare for them. You have to go through a lot of training and retraining. The plane's instruments have to be reevaluated every few years to make sure they're up to date and in proper working order. Yes, things can fail, but plane crashes tend to be sensationalized more in the news than other types of accidents. Plane crashes just make the news more often than car crashes do.

EDITED to say that I would trust my dad flying over some other pilot, who could be drunk or asleep for all I know.

the pilot is the distinction for me. Like, I think commercial pilots are extensively trained and NONE operate planes that they aren't supposed to be flying, whereas when you hear about small private planes going down it's generally more because of pilot error than technical failure (like JFK Jr, Aaliyah). At least, as far as my paranoia is remembering it.

I've heard of stories of commercial pilots falling asleep or who get caught drinking before flying. You have to go through a lot of training to even have your regular pilot's license, tbh. You're right in that you are definitely a lot more likely to have pilots with less experience in small private planes, though. IIRC JFK Jr. was a relatively new pilot (like less than 50 hours in his plane) and hadn't been instrument rated yet.

I think it's a normal reaction to be more scared when you hear the stories than you would after hearing about car crashes. My dad has 45 years experience and owned a flight school for a while, but my mom stopped flying with him after JFK, Jr. I think people just need to be aware that there's a risk associated with operating any type of machinery.

I hate when people say this.

Yes, you're more likely to die in a car crash than a plane crash.

But you're also more likely to survive a car crash. Millions of people are in non-fatal car crashes every year. Generally, when a plane goes down, nobody is surviving.
itsalanisbitch 9th-Dec-2012 08:46 pm (UTC)
last sentence is not true.

you can and many people do survive plane crashes.

Doesn't change the fact that plane crashes are extremely rare. It's incredibly sad when they do happen, though.

lol, did I say shit about not flying commercial or did I specifically state PRIVATE planes?
sugarcrawler 9th-Dec-2012 08:54 pm (UTC)
a little harsh? a lot of people are afraid to fly in planes, so stop pestering them rme.

With crossing the road you at least have some level of control on whether is happens or not (you know, looking left and right, wearng reflectors, if you are driving: your own speed, distance you keep to other cars, etc). When you are up there, you can't do jack to control your destiny. It obviously is one of the reasons people are more nervous about flying. It doesn't come down to simple statistics.
