Shonda Rhimes: Katherine Heigl Hurt Me

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Shonda Rhimes and her Scandal star Kerry Washington are the focus of Sunday's all-new episode of Oprah's Next Chapter, and in addition to talking about the importance of their addictive Thursday night series, Rhimes looks back on one of her more frustrating professional moments.

In 2008, Katherine Heigl notoriously pulled her name from Emmy contention, saying that she didn't feel the material she was given that year warranted consideration. "On some level, it stung," Rhimes tells Oprah Winfrey. "But on some level I was not surprised. When people show you who they are, believe them. I carry that with me a lot. It has served me well."

Winfrey then goes on to ask Rhimes what accomplishment she's most proud of. "I'm most proud of the fact that I have figured out how to exist as both a creative person and artist and a businesswoman and a manager," she says. "Because those two things do not go together. For a long time I really had a hard time with the idea that I was supposed to be this person who lived inside her head and created things, but also managed a bunch of people and had to lead a group of people."

Rhimes adds, "But those two things came together, and I'm really proud of how that works now."

Check out a sneak peek clip and tune in to Oprah's Next Chapter every Sunday at 9 p.m. on OWN.

I love brown eyes and blonde hair. I have black hair and blue eyes. Wrong combinations represent!

I have almost black hair, extremely pale skin (think Snow White) and green eyes. I married a black man with brown eyes. Our son has white skin (not as light as me, you wouldn't immediately know he's mixed and as a baby was as white as me), blond hair (what?) and his eyes are multicoloured (brown circle on top of a blue circle, which overall looks either green or hazel depending on how dialayed his pupils are.) We're having another baby sometime in the next month and we are really curious what he is going to look like. Darker skinned, blue-eyed redhead likely, since genetics seem to mean nothing!

He sounds gorgeous. Congrats and good luck with the upcoming baby!

Thanks! We think he's gorgeous :). He actually has been told by a few professionals he should model (less for his looks and more for his ambiguous ethnicity, which is apparently big right now), but he has the WORST fakesmile ever (like Chandler in that episode of friends) so I don't see that happening :).

I am so jealous. That sounds like a genetic lottery tbh.

Thanks! We think he's pretty gorgeous of course. We laughed when he was born, said it's a good thing that other than colouring, he looks so much like my husband, or people would be looking at the milkman funny :). Even the nurse pulled my husband aside a d said, "I'm sorry, I don't think he's going to get much darker than this." My husband laughed and was like, "What? I don't care." In addition to the amazing colour of his eyes, they are HUGE. He gets compliments everywhere. We couldn't go out when he was a baby without being stopped several times for comments on his eyes. He is a handful, but yes, he is gorgeous :).

That sounds like one beautiful child! And I know a redhead black woman with green eyes so it could totally happen! LOL

Thanks, he is (but I'm not biased at all :)). Considering I had reddish hair as a kid, red I would expect more than blond, I've never been blond. Where did the blond come from with a dark brunette and a black man? We don't get it! It's dirty blond, but definitely blond! Then again, my husband has blond in his beard, so who knows! We are very curious about this baby. Until two days ago, we thought he was a girl (earlier ultrasound was wrong), so we're having to change our mental image of him anyway :). My sister is tall, skinny, olive-skinned, blond, and outgoing. I am short, fat, brunette, and shy. We had mutual friends who didn't know we were related. So I wouldn't be surprised if this baby is nothing like our first kid :).

Don't alot of Irish people have black hair and blue eyes? or so I have assumed from reading fiction books.

I think that elf girl who was in the lord of the ring also have black hair and blue eyes.
