Les Mis Reviews from Variety & The Hollywood Reporter

As a faithful rendering of a justly beloved musical, "Les Miserables" will more than satisfy the show's legions of fans. Even so, director Tom Hooper and the producers have taken a number of artistic liberties with this lavish bigscreen interpretation: The squalor and upheaval of early 19th-century France are conveyed with a vividness that would have made Victor Hugo proud, heightened by the raw, hungry intensity of the actors' live oncamera vocals. Yet for all its expected highs, the adaptation has been managed with more gusto than grace; at the end of the day, this impassioned epic too often topples beneath the weight of its own grandiosity.

The film has garnered a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes so far:

I loved it. I'm not even an Anne Hathaway fan, but OMG I've never seen a better rendition of I Dreamed a Dream. I thought it was phenomenal.

So jealous rn. How was Crowe? He is the one I am most worried about.
jeny_spano Re: I saw it8th-Dec-2012 05:09 am (UTC)
He definitely isn't the strongest voice of the bunch, but I thought his performance was fantastic.

I feel like I might have heard some more technically better renditions, but I think that Anne's acting probably elevated the performance, as did the fact that since it's a movie you can do close ups on the face and get a better sense of emotion.
wigsnatcher Re: I saw it8th-Dec-2012 05:41 am (UTC)
omg great

are you a big les mis fan to begin with?

like was everything carried out to your liking

and more importantly was The Confrontation kept as a song or did they downgrade it to dialogue?

so_chic_doll 8th-Dec-2012 05:08 am (UTC)

My husband was reading reviews out loud tonight, and it sounded like a bunch of hipsters that like to hear themselves talk out loud, tbh. IDK, IDK, The Hollywood Reporter one is ridiculous.

Some had good points, though, especially regarding Hooper's style and visuals, but the moment they complain about the fact that it's sung from start to finish, I tune out.

mhfromnh 8th-Dec-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
they need to put Ewan in more musicals.
lizanthemum 8th-Dec-2012 05:09 am (UTC)
I feel like I'm going to be obsessed with Eddie Redmayne after I see this and I am totally okay with that.
mellarks 8th-Dec-2012 05:13 am (UTC)
As you should be because he's a flawless actor and literally one of the sweetest people ever. The most recent example being HE arranged an interview with one of his fan tumblrs (that's not even an official one) because he likes the people who run it and remembers their faces when they go see his performances in plays. He wanted to do something nice for them and... he told his manager he wanted to do that.
so_chic_doll 8th-Dec-2012 05:15 am (UTC)
omg stoppppppp

i don't need another actor to be in love with.
lizanthemum 8th-Dec-2012 05:16 am (UTC)
Omg that is so nice of him! I haven't seen much of his stuff, just My Week with Marilyn and parts of that movie with Julianne Moore but I find him so adorable.
fauxkaren 8th-Dec-2012 05:23 am (UTC)
I've only ever seen Eddie in Tess of the D'Urbervilles in which he played Angel Clare who is like one of my most hated fictional characters of all time.

LOL. SO I HAVE AN IRRATIONAL DISTRUST OF HIM.

I hope his Marius blots out my memories of Angel Clare.
ebenetwo 8th-Dec-2012 05:28 am (UTC)
i already adore him and this just ugh stop it eddie
oh_sailor 8th-Dec-2012 05:51 am (UTC)

roxas39 8th-Dec-2012 05:34 am (UTC)
Sure He's handsome and a sweetheart but that's where the complaints stop
lulubelle007 love eddie8th-Dec-2012 01:23 pm (UTC)
ive seen him on stage twice
second time in Donmar Theatre, which is TINY, and I was in the front row (practically on the stage) so he was just...right there. sometimes he looks into the audience member;s eyes when delivering the lines. I died several times that evening.

He is just very special:)

Russell wasn't great, but he did his best. Sometimes, it's a shame because of how a stronger singer would've been better for Javert.

Amanda wasn't as glaring because Cosette wasn't as covally demanding. She just had a sweet voice, which worked.

Honestly, they could say it was a steaming pile of shit topped off with a little French flag and I'd still go see it first thing on Xmas day.
pinkprincessnat 8th-Dec-2012 05:12 am (UTC)
I was hoping all the reviews would be super positive so I'd want to see it more. Oh well, I get the feeling I'll end up seeing it anyway.
kiki3291 8th-Dec-2012 05:13 am (UTC)
I've never seen the musical so my opinion might mean shit: but it was amazing. I loved it.

Anne was fucking amazing, omg. <3 And Amanda surprised me, I hope she starts taking better roles after this.
magicpebble 8th-Dec-2012 05:14 am (UTC)
It's sort of an exhausting score, so I'm not surprised by these reviews. Nothing I've heard yet is going to stop me from seeing it, though.
slut_talk 8th-Dec-2012 05:17 am (UTC)
Question for anyone who knows stuff about Les Mis:

I hate musicals. Hate them. I don't know why, I always have. But a friend of mine really wants to see this for her birthday and obviously if she wants to go I'll go, but am I going to go crazy sitting through 158 minutes? Obviously I'll go for my friend but...I want to prepare myself.

everyone_listen 8th-Dec-2012 05:18 am (UTC)
its entirely sung so... probably
fauxkaren 8th-Dec-2012 05:24 am (UTC)
It depends on why you hate musicals, tbh.
ladyfly56 8th-Dec-2012 05:25 am (UTC)
it's a sung-through musical so yes you will. it's non stop singing.
lizanthemum 8th-Dec-2012 05:29 am (UTC)
HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY HATE MUSICALS
mistycreed 8th-Dec-2012 06:21 am (UTC)
Your icon is reminding me that I still have 17 days until I can open my limited edition box set of the Sound of Music. Christmas needs to get here asap.
magwildwood 8th-Dec-2012 05:30 am (UTC)
The things we do for friends...sounds like a nightmare to me, but I'd probably go too. Good luck!
wigsnatcher 8th-Dec-2012 05:43 am (UTC)
i dunno

it's my favorite musical ever and i'm big on broadway

but there's nothing cheesy about it if that's why you don't like them

it's serious and sad with some very sparse comic moments
joaniemaloney 8th-Dec-2012 05:51 am (UTC)
oh lawd it does not sound like a thing for you.

but you do say 'obviously you'll go for your friend' so try to find bits to like? idk.
uglypricetag 8th-Dec-2012 07:10 am (UTC)
lol bb i know how you feel. the only musicals i could tolerate were wizard of oz and dancer in the dark. i just don't *get* them
loverelapse 8th-Dec-2012 08:49 am (UTC)
same, h8 musicals
milly 8th-Dec-2012 09:51 am (UTC)
It really depends why you hate musicals. Les Miserables really relies on emotions and the song carry the narrative really well and it has a superb flow rather than feeling like the show/story stops every few minutes for a song, before carrying on.

I'd say that it's probably the one musical that connects the most with people who are usually not fans of the musical? It was pretty much destroyed by critics when it first came out, but it was so popular with the public you couldn't get through to the theater to get tickets, because the phone lines were so busy.

I'd say the best test is to listen to a few songs and if they resonate emotionally with you even just a little, then you'll enjoy it. I Dreamed a Dream, On My Own and One Day More are good ones for that test.
eaglefan2011 8th-Dec-2012 05:17 am (UTC)
i love musicals so i'll be seeing it
