idk why i haven't followed this at all, i was so into lotr...

i just learned that they broke it into two parts? smh.
redleigh86 7th-Dec-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
Because he's adding stuff from the appendices and, I believe, from the tales or silmarillion or something? Anyway, The Hobbit is just the main story, but he's filming other stories from Middle-Earth to include in it.
luvherbones 7th-Dec-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
Oooh interesting. maybe i will give it a chance then.
lucciolaa 7th-Dec-2012 11:47 pm (UTC)
But what does the Silmarillion have to do with The Hobbit?
redleigh86 7th-Dec-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
I don't remember what all he's filming, I just know he's doing a lot of background/history stuff and side stories. I said maybe Silmarillion or some of the Tales but I don't recall. You could always google it if you want to know for sure.
lucciolaa 7th-Dec-2012 11:59 pm (UTC)
I was just wondering what backstuff he'd be using from TS because I don't really see them as being related in any way. I think I'm still pressed that they decided to go the 3-film route.
anolinde 8th-Dec-2012 12:09 am (UTC)
I don't think they'd be using The Silmarillion, but rather The Unfinished Tales (iirc, it talks about Gandalf's meeting with Thorin and how they decided that they were going to try to take back The Lonely Mountain).
anolinde 7th-Dec-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
Three, actually. =P
luvherbones 7th-Dec-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)

wiluplsbquiet 7th-Dec-2012 11:52 pm (UTC)
Neither did I! Until my friend made me watch it the other day.

It's a BBC mini series from 2004 called 'North and South' set in industrial England ~times.

So great! <333 it
lucciolaa 7th-Dec-2012 11:54 pm (UTC)
I just looked up the novel North and South and because I'm too lazy to read it, I'll be devouring the mini series this weekend.
joaniemaloney 8th-Dec-2012 12:12 am (UTC)
omg go watch it. North and South.

I BET THAT YOU'LL PROB END UP MARATHONING ALL OF IT. CHEMISTRY IS OFF THE CHARTS.

Ooh, I hadn't realized that they were going to show more of the Dwarves' back story! I wonder if we're going to see Smaug attack the first time around.
natywentz 7th-Dec-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
so who saw it already? i need reviews tbh.
lucciolaa 7th-Dec-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
Can someone better versed in Tolkien-lore help me out? What's the difference between goblins and orcs? I always assumed they were one and the same.
anolinde 7th-Dec-2012 11:50 pm (UTC)
I think goblins are smaller and tend to live in the mountains, whereas Orcs are bigger (but still smaller than Uruk-hai).
littlepunkryo 7th-Dec-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
orc:

the goblins are the creepy little assholes that live in mountains. they look kinda similar in some ways ngl.
lucciolaa 7th-Dec-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
Well I know what they look like, I was just wondering if the difference between them was that goblins = mountain dwellers, orc = Sauron's slaves, or if they were different... breeds? races? species? Not sure what word I'm looking for there.
littlepunkryo 8th-Dec-2012 12:05 am (UTC)
I haven't thought about this in a long time so I may be wrong but I think they're definitely meant to be related, but not EXACTLY the same? Like I think goblins are basically smaller orcs that live in the mountains so they're smaller but I'd probably check the wikis just to be sure. It seems, from what I gathered, that it's like domestic dogs - same species, different breed?

lucciolaa 8th-Dec-2012 12:20 am (UTC)
Maybe that's it. it's really not that important lol they're all ugly bastards all the same
anolinde 8th-Dec-2012 12:07 am (UTC)
I think they're the same race/species, but different breeds? If that makes sense? Apparently "goblin" was the term Tolkien used in The Hobbit (which was before he wrote The Lord of the Rings), but he switched to "Orc" for LOTR and only the Hobbit characters tend to refer to them as "goblins."

I got all this from the Orc Wikipedia page, btw.
lucciolaa 8th-Dec-2012 12:19 am (UTC)
Well I originally thought that he referred to them as goblins and then switched to Orcs after he took the time to really flesh out his ideas later on with regards to their creation and their history. idk it's really not that important but I was just hoping to clarify.
adlanth 8th-Dec-2012 12:18 am (UTC)
What anolinde said, basically. I just conducted an extensive and highly scientific literary survey which consisted of me Ctrl + F my way through The Hobbit and LotR and I don't think there's really a difference. In LotR the word 'goblin' appears something like 13 times (but it refers to both Orcs from Moria and Uruk-Hai) but the word 'Orc' is used in the vast majority of cases. Meanwhile in The Hobbit the word 'goblin' is always used. No 'goblins' in the Silmarillion.

But just don't call goblins gnomes, and vice versa. They wouldn't like it.

Ok Martin Freeman just seems douchey in this article. I don't mind cussing, but really, is it necessary in every single one of your sentences Freeman? Surely you know that children love these stories and these characters and are going to be enjoying reading any articles they can get their little hands on. It just seems unnecessary and unprofessional given the wide and varied audience he is presenting to.

Small man syndrome probably.
joaniemaloney 8th-Dec-2012 12:11 am (UTC)
I was just reading this issue! so ready for the film already.
infinitycluster 8th-Dec-2012 12:19 am (UTC)

hellb 8th-Dec-2012 04:02 am (UTC)
I hope there will be as many hot-ass men in this trilogy as there was in the first one. So far though, I haven't seen any which makes me sad... :( (except for Thranduil (possibly) and Luke Evans' character)...

RIP sexy Legolas, Boromir, Aragorn, Eomer, those sexy Easterling Warriors, etc. etc....
