Feminist Writer Camille Paglia spilled the tea on your favorite pop acts!

A leading feminist writer has accused Taylor Swift and Katy Perry of killing feminism and throwing society back to the 'demure girly-girl days of the white-bread 1950s'.

Camille Paglia says that both singers have 'insipid, bleached-out personas' that hark back to the man-pleasing, pre-feminist era.

In an article for The Hollywood Reporter, she wrote that as a result, many of today's young women fail to realize the role their sexuality plays in society and 'partying till you drop has gotten as harmless as a Rotary Club meeting'.

I thought being a feminist meant working for the rights of women so they are able to do what they want; even if it is being girly girls or being sexually provocative.
ijsutcomeundone 7th-Dec-2012 11:20 pm (UTC)
no it means being sexy enough. never mind the fact that "what is sexy" is a question answered by men in the first place. and if you try to answer it yourself you end up like lady gaga, which is not sexy enough apparently.
ellelelle 7th-Dec-2012 11:21 pm (UTC)
this lady is clearly second wave feminist.. what you are expressing would be closer to liberal feminism and the third wave..
artpopart 7th-Dec-2012 11:57 pm (UTC)
She's not a feminist. She hates feminists. She's a conservative douche bag.
aflaminghalo 7th-Dec-2012 11:16 pm (UTC)
Mm. Appearing sexually available really isn't the same thing as actually being sexually liberated at all.

Also, it's my party is a fucking tune and I'm going to listen to it right now.
aflaminghalo 7th-Dec-2012 11:18 pm (UTC)
Also, saying that Rihanna has an "elemental" sexuality is really rubbing me the wrong way.

I really really hate when people misuse the term schizophrenia.

Pet peeve.

I don't understand this article. Isn't it like... the triumph of feminism that makes it so these women are allowed to be successful in the first place? That they don't have to be married and have their husband speak for them in order to be taken seriously? That they can write their own songs, buy their own homes, and live their lives under their own rules? I thought that was the point of the feminist movement- letting women do whatever the fuck they want, especially if a man can do it!

Also interesting that she speaks more highly of Rihanna, who is in love with a guy who physically abused her, and Beyonce, who I love dearly, but she has a fairly typical life outside of her pop-stardom, so... idgi

That is what bothers me the most, the fact that feminism seems so fractured and splintered.

Where if someone doesn't fit into someone else's view of what a "good feminist" is, you are a bad woman.
powerbottom 7th-Dec-2012 11:26 pm (UTC)
Most of the feminists I've come across are just bitter women who want to be the type that lives from A to B and never sway away from anything that isn't comfortable to them.

Isn't feminism supposed to be fighting as women for your right to do whatever the hell you want? All I've ever seen is women belittling other women because said woman doesn't live the way/do the things they deem "womanly".

did she lie about taylor tho

It's funny this writer would feel entitled to decide who is "killing feminism" when she is dead feminism personified.

In the 21st century it's not OK to shame other women, and on a side note, it's definitely not OK to make offensive and misleading comments about mental illnesses like schizophrenia. She should educate herself.

And I say that as a feminist. This article is trying way too hard.

can white "feminisits" stop talking
artpopart 7th-Dec-2012 11:56 pm (UTC)
Paglia is an ANTI-FEMINIST!

She hates women, and is a conservative. Her best friend is Rush Limbaugh.

Never thought I'd hear a feminist say a woman wasn't being sexy enough?

Point for you, Gaga.

Women are responsible for being raped:

"I am being vilified by feminists for merely having a common-sense attitude about rape. I loathe this thing about date rape. Have twelve tequilas at a fraternity party and a guy asks you to go up to his room, and then you're surprised when he assaults you? Most women want to be seduced or lured."

Not surprised.

Her whole comment about Taylor & Katy dressing sexy but not having the personality to match it reeks of ~if you are going to dress like you are asking for it then act like it. Good girls don't dress that way~

So this reminded me of something for some reason, I guess I'll just tell a story :D

A friend of mine had a Nut Cracker ballet preview thing at a town event thing. She's part of a group that contains very small children up to High School kids.

So, my friend is stretching. She's wearing her tights and leotard. She's stretching before she has to dance, like you would. Her mom comes up to us and actually tells her to stop, because some older man was looking at her in an inappropriate way.

And that's really bothered me. Why on earth should she stop stretching because some guy looked at her butt? Why should that guy not be called out for looking at her butt? I mean, really. There's a guy who is looking, inappropriately, at someone in a group of people who are very obviously minors.

No, by all means, let's just stop all the stretching. Obviously that's the problem here.

and there, that was good to complain about.

I can't with the Lesley Gore shade. Bitch is jealous that she didn't come up with a proto-feminist classic girl pop song like her. Stay presseT gurl
