Feminist Writer Camille Paglia spilled the tea on your favorite pop acts!

A leading feminist writer has accused Taylor Swift and Katy Perry of killing feminism and throwing society back to the 'demure girly-girl days of the white-bread 1950s'.

Camille Paglia says that both singers have 'insipid, bleached-out personas' that hark back to the man-pleasing, pre-feminist era.

In an article for The Hollywood Reporter, she wrote that as a result, many of today's young women fail to realize the role their sexuality plays in society and 'partying till you drop has gotten as harmless as a Rotary Club meeting'.

here go hell come B)Collapse )

seriously. i don't like her at all but this is disgusting. GET YO DICK TAYLOR.
stormer1_1 7th-Dec-2012 10:31 pm (UTC)
She's so on the money with Perry and Swift I could cry. With Gags I feel like the "lack of eroticism" is on purpose, part of the whole schtick.
pastelward 7th-Dec-2012 10:31 pm (UTC)
i absolutely cannot stand camille. i wish she would quit.
ladybozi 7th-Dec-2012 10:32 pm (UTC)
Women need to find a balance between being strong and independent and femininity and vulnerability.
katiefitch 7th-Dec-2012 10:33 pm (UTC)
tbh that's been the struggle of women since the dawn of time
if you're too strong, you're a bitch, if you're too feminine then you're dumb and useless
vampireweekend 7th-Dec-2012 10:37 pm (UTC)
basically
alexander2808 7th-Dec-2012 10:39 pm (UTC)
role model

ladybozi 7th-Dec-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
I totally totally agree.

However, there will always be girls like Taylor who just want a simple lovey dovey life. My best friend is like this and that's just how she is, no changing it!

I'm the opposite, I think I have a pretty good balance to be honest. I know that I need to be feminine and let a guy feel needed, for the sake of nature; however, at the same time I'm fine without a man and people actually consider me really strong and tough lol :) <--which actually makes some men uneasy if I show too much of that side.

We should be teaching this balance somewhere lol
trixielollipop 7th-Dec-2012 10:42 pm (UTC)
Or rather women should be accepted in society for whatever the hell balance they want to have.
rainaweather 8th-Dec-2012 12:52 am (UTC)
No they don't. Women need to be allowed to be individuals.
mountainblack 8th-Dec-2012 03:28 am (UTC)
women need 2 be whatever the fuck they want to be
whimsical_irony 7th-Dec-2012 10:32 pm (UTC)
have all these ladies said/done problematic things? yes. does that mean we aren't allowed to like their music? no. dudebros do much worse on a daily basis tbh and no one yells at them for setting men back.
tiki876 7th-Dec-2012 10:33 pm (UTC)

silly_izzy_me 7th-Dec-2012 10:33 pm (UTC)
well this has really poor arguments.
lcacbc 7th-Dec-2012 10:35 pm (UTC)
I disagree with points of this article, but damn, she got Taylor bang on
silly_izzy_me 7th-Dec-2012 10:35 pm (UTC)
In her essay she adds that she has noticed how many young women wear revealing clothing, however most seem 'seem curiously unaware of the erotic charge of their racy regalia'.

das no lie though. for example, I saw this short news clip about a girl who dressed up as like a sexy bumblebee or something idek for halloween, and the girl was like 15 or 16 and the school principal said she was dressed like a porn star and the girl was like "what's a porn star? what's that mean?" and her parents were OUTRAGED that the principal would tell her what porn was, and yet they let their daughter go to school half naked. smh.
hypnology 7th-Dec-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
How does a 15/16 year old girl not know what porn is? I might not have seen any porn at that age but I certainly knew what it was.
silly_izzy_me 7th-Dec-2012 10:39 pm (UTC)
Idk I had a friend who was raised in a non-religious family and didn't know what it was when she was 19. She had thought it was like pin-up girls.
cityxpretty 7th-Dec-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
lol ik
adam_pally 7th-Dec-2012 10:39 pm (UTC)
15 or 16 and she doesn't know what porn is? I think she just knows how to lie well to her parents tbh
unclecraig 7th-Dec-2012 10:44 pm (UTC)
sounds like she was bullshitting her naive ass parents.
fireprince 7th-Dec-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
OMG I didn't know what masturbation was till mid-high school!!! No Lie on a class trip in middle school I heard this boy say masturbation on the school bus and I asked one of the Teachers what it meant and she told me to go ask my parents. At the time I just didn't understand but now that I'm older it's funny on SOOOOOO many levels. I remember looking it up in a Dictionary too and not understanding ROFL!
thishollywood 7th-Dec-2012 10:36 pm (UTC)
AND IN CASE NE1 DIDNT REALIZE----->

dis is a PRIME EXAMPLE of WHITE WOMEN oNLY CARIN ABOUT DEMSELVES & THEIR ISSUES & puttin MINORITY WOMEN on the shaft

she even specifics "Middle-class white gurlz" @ the end of her little rant. not even playin that she doesnt give a fuck.
cruel_idol 7th-Dec-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
I agree, fuck this version of "feminism".
bluekrinkle 7th-Dec-2012 10:40 pm (UTC)
Yea, that's really not cool.

chilli_cheese 7th-Dec-2012 10:46 pm (UTC)

alouds 7th-Dec-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
yup lol but what else can be expected from paglia
bluekrinkle 7th-Dec-2012 10:38 pm (UTC)
She raises some points! Describing Katy Perry as a "manic cyborg cheerleader" is accurate.
cluelessraf 7th-Dec-2012 10:41 pm (UTC)
So basically you cant be too sexy and you cant be too virginal?
daydreamx3 7th-Dec-2012 10:41 pm (UTC)
fuck this article
psychicherz 7th-Dec-2012 10:43 pm (UTC)
Middle-class white girls will never escape the cookie-cutter tyranny of their airless ghettos until the entertainment industry looks into its soul and starts giving them powerful models of mature womanliness.

Because what feminism really needs is to focus on the needs of middle-class white girls??
faithgrowsold 7th-Dec-2012 10:44 pm (UTC)
I feel like her analysis of both Katy and Taylor are spot-on, but I'm not so hot on her criticism of them for it as anti-feminist. And I say this as someone who has a semi-irrational/semi-rational hatred of T.Swaz.

IDK, maybe I just don't understand what she's trying to say here, because this whole article was confusing as fuck, but I'm not really feeling this. Which isn't to say there aren't aspects of T.Swaz and Katy that are anti-feminist or problematic or whatever, but I'm not sure she's criticizing them for the right things here. Or maybe I just have no idea what she's trying to say.
hypnology 7th-Dec-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
IA with everything you said in your second paragraph. I read the article twice and I couldn't comprehend much. It's confusing, and yes, they have problematic issuses, but I think she's knocking at the wrong points or the wording is off, or like you said, maybe I don't know what she's trying to say. It could also be the fact that I'm wired off coffee.
