Kate Middleton Carrying Twins?

When Prince William and Kate's official announcement that she is pregnant came Monday, the palace said she was "expecting a baby."

But in light of the fact that the Duchess of Cambridge is also suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum, a form of acute morning sickness, there has been growing speculation that she may, in fact, be expecting twins.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the Duchess's rare condition tends to appear more often in women carrying twins.

So what would it mean for the royal family if Kate, 30 – who was discharged from the hospital Thursday – were to deliver two little royals? A pair of heirs?

Nope, royal experts tell PEOPLE. In fact, it's all a bit complicated.

The firstborn twin would have a completely different path than his or her sibling, says royal historian Robert Lacey, author of The Queen: A Life in Brief: "The first child to appear will have precedence. Whichever one comes out first will be the heir – and it will be the call of the obstetrician if there is a caesarean section."

And the obstetrician will make that delivery based on the location of the babies during labor, Mark Johnson, Professor of Obstetrics at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, tells PEOPLE.

If she's less than 12 weeks, I doubt they even know if she's having twins.

Although I guess the doctors might prioritize a royal pregnancy and do an early ultrasound...

Oh I'm sure they did one to make sure everything was developing correctly when she was admitted.

actually my obgyn once told me he only did ultra sounds early then 10 weeks for emergency cases. he said he hated it doing it at 5/6/7 and you see two little sacs then the mom comes back at 12 and there is only one sac. it happens often.

That sounds like what I've heard. I'm 12 weeks and going for my first ultrasound on Monday (aggghh!!), but as soon as I started to think like that, I remembered that this is the heir to the throne being born. They might do an early ultrasound for it, huh? lol

I had hyperemesis with any pregnancy that I've had and all of them have been single. It could just be her. I think they're hyping it up too much.

I would love it if they have twins and the first born happens to be a girl and the 2nd a boy and then see what happens.

Rubbish. A LJ friend is expecting for the third time and like the two times before she is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum and she has had no twins. She was admitted to the hospital just a few hours ago actually, for the second time in a month.

exactly. i had two friends with the same thing and they both had just one baby. the only thing was they both had girls.

on the other hand my sister had twins just last dec and barely had any morning sickness during her pregnancy with them

people need to get over themselves. its probably just one baby. yes it CAN indicate twins but plenty of women have that same issue and have a singleton.

Twin girls? :D

Ngl, I think William would be awesome with a daughter, and I see Charles and Harry getting super giddy over the idea of a granddaughter and a niece.

As my mum would say: "Put that in your pipe and smoke it!" :)

I imagine that this conception was very...formal? I just can't imagine anything between these two.

Don't care if it's a boy or a girl, as long as it's a ginger baby so I can fantasize about it being Harry's.

Just putting it out there that my hyperemesis gravidarum resulted in one baby. It's not the surest of signs.

They need to calm their arses down for a minute. Plenty of people with that condition I can't spell only have a single (my SIL has had it both pregnancies, both just one baby)

well shit.... if there's twins and a c-section, poor doctor's gonna have a lotta pressure

My sister just had twins on Tuesday. She had no nausea whatsoever. She lucked out this time around.

If they have two babies, it'll end ala the twins from Prom Dress
