Australian DJs who pranked nurse taken off the air

Mods: this seemed to post w/o problem to my personal journal, not sure where formatting error is?

source is Reuters employee.

More from TMZ:

The two Australian DJs at the center of the Kate Middleton hospital prank have gone RADIO SILENT since news broke that the nurse at the hospital committed suicide ... TMZ has learned.

The DJs are under serious fire after pulling off a stunt where they pretended to be the Queen of England (fake voice and all) and duped nurse Jacintha Saldanha into connecting them to the people treating Middleton, who revealed details about Kate's condition.

Saldanha's body was discovered early this morning ... and cops believe it's an obvious suicide.

TMZ called the Australian radio station where the DJs work ... and were told by the executive producer that the DJs will NOT be taking any calls, period.

The E.P. explained ... the DJs have been "ordered" not to speak to the media. It's unclear who issued the order.

The producer added, "I advise you to stop trying to call them."

I do not at all feel any remorse for those DJs losing their jobs. They ought to be fired, and not just for this .

OP, Matthew Keys never said the employees were fired, only taken off air. Right now he's trying to correct NYMag for saying the same thing.
firerosearien 7th-Dec-2012 07:18 pm (UTC)
Thanks. What I had read (via NYMag) had said fired.
rebeljean 7th-Dec-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
Did they say how she killed herself?
rebeljean 7th-Dec-2012 07:30 pm (UTC)
Saw this on tumblr...

Just So You Know.

The nurse who committed suicide (Jacintha Saldanha) is not the same nurse who gave the DJs the information about Kate. Jacintha was the nurse who first answered the call and transferred it to Kate’s ward nurse, who was the one who was recorded giving the DJs Kate’s medical information.

Yeah a few people have clarified that throughout the post, but the whole thing still seems to be a mess of confusion.

Eh, I don't think firing them is doing anything. The only way this would've been prevented is if they had not done the call, or possibly if they had cut it off the moment they realized they were being taken seriously. They are awful people for going through with it, but they have to live with the fact that this woman they pranked killed herself. I think that may be punishment enough. But whatever.

what a bunch of knobs
exlenne 7th-Dec-2012 08:10 pm (UTC)
The way society at large views and responds to suicide is absolutely disgusting.

"Only weak people kill themselves. If you killed yourself, you were weak and nobody else is to blame. Oh, you were systematically harassed and abused for years upon years? Should've been tougher, obvi."

GROSS

If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. Jfc people are fucked up
sharks_teeth 7th-Dec-2012 07:52 pm (UTC)
I was so shocked to hear of the nurse's death. Absolutely tragic for her family. It also is very sad for the Royal Family imo. The prank was horrible in terms of setting the nurse up - all she would have wanted was to appear as doing her job well and being polite. She really had no option but to give the information or (as far as she knew) she would have come across as rude to the Queen.

I can't listen to commercial radio because of shit like this. I hate pranks that involve tricking people and making them look stupid.
x_butterfly19_x 7th-Dec-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
They are obviously not directly responsible for her death, but I am glad that some action has been taken.

RIP

this is so sad, that poor receptionist
ruby_chalice 7th-Dec-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
She was a nurse.
ludmi_83 7th-Dec-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
I lol at how naive people is. Yeah "suicide"

I know that people are very naive since I work in the media but really sometimes it will always surprise me how, specially UK people they live like in a bubble and that nothing happens in the world.

And the dj's of australia will have their job back in a few weeks, nobody will remember this by next week. Sorry i'm harsh but i know how it is, u give one news then next day people forget

kairoso 7th-Dec-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
what do you mean by "suicide"? do you think she's actually not dead?
ludmi_83 7th-Dec-2012 08:29 pm (UTC)
No, I think her dead is very very suspicious

"Jacintha was found unconscious at an address near King Edward VII Hospital. Paramedics made desperate efforts to revive her but she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 9.30am"

How is that suicide? he was found dead in a random address that is not her house? No note? Either something very fishy happen or she did suicide but totally by presure of a lot of stuff. And believe me if they knew it's suicide for sure by now they would know.

As much as what they did was fucking below the belt, considering her job was never threatened and it wasn't the actual nurse that spoke, i would assume she had underlying issues before this happened. However they both deserve to lose their jobs and i hope they feel like turds for this for the next decade.
jello404 7th-Dec-2012 08:56 pm (UTC)
Jesus, its not even that fucking serious.I cant believe she killed herself over something so petty.RIP. Thats really fucked up and sad.
yourremedy 7th-Dec-2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
Agreed. It is sad but I also think she must have been having other problems too and this was just the final straw. Because why would you kill yourself over that?
ruby_chalice 7th-Dec-2012 09:31 pm (UTC)
She made a mistake.

That mistake was broadcast globally. TV, Internet, Newspapers.

The tape of the hoax played continuously by the media.

I could see how that would send someone over the edge. Especially if she's particularly conscientious about her work.

ruby_chalice 7th-Dec-2012 08:58 pm (UTC)
They've only been taken off air. They haven't been fired. Yet.

It would be nice to think that there would be a national outcry in Australia and that the station and the DJ's in question would be boycotted.

It would be nice. But unlikely.

That Mel chick was on the first season of The Amazing Race Australia. I thought she was so fun, too. Gurl.

I thought she was so fun, too.

omg judging you.... she was so fucking horrible to her teammate on that show. Just a nasty person, straight up.
nimberlane 8th-Dec-2012 05:57 am (UTC)
Well considering her teammate was her sister.... lol

But let's be real the only star of that season of Joey. I almost peaced out when she got eliminated. And then those boring ass surfers won. Not here for straight white male wins.
yourremedy 7th-Dec-2012 09:05 pm (UTC)
I still can't believe someone fell for it. But then, to be completely fair, I was thinking the other day when this story broke. If it were me, royalty is serious bidness and if I answered that call, I wouldn't know what to do because do you risk denying your Queen important information? Know what I mean?
I'm saying I may have made the same mistake as the nurse because I wouldn't want the Queen calling and then me saying, "You can't have that info." Because then she could potentially get in trouble for that..ya know?
vagabonden 7th-Dec-2012 10:32 pm (UTC)
That was what I was thinking as well. I have to think that she and the entire hospital was in a highly unusual situation. Certainly protocol was in place for any "commoner" calling the hospital -- but I have to wonder if there wasn't any set protocol for dealing with the Royals, at least not one that she or the other nurse knew of. Protocol with most people is one thing, protocol with royals is a completely different situation. So maybe she was afraid of hanging up on the Queen or didn't want to be perceived as rude or not giving expedient service.

I definitely suspect that there really wasn't a set protocol given that the other nurse was being accommodating as well. Just so sad that it ended the way it did.
