Australian DJs who pranked nurse taken off the air

Mods: this seemed to post w/o problem to my personal journal, not sure where formatting error is?

source is Reuters employee.

More from TMZ:

The two Australian DJs at the center of the Kate Middleton hospital prank have gone RADIO SILENT since news broke that the nurse at the hospital committed suicide ... TMZ has learned.

The DJs are under serious fire after pulling off a stunt where they pretended to be the Queen of England (fake voice and all) and duped nurse Jacintha Saldanha into connecting them to the people treating Middleton, who revealed details about Kate's condition.

Saldanha's body was discovered early this morning ... and cops believe it's an obvious suicide.

TMZ called the Australian radio station where the DJs work ... and were told by the executive producer that the DJs will NOT be taking any calls, period.

The E.P. explained ... the DJs have been "ordered" not to speak to the media. It's unclear who issued the order.

The producer added, "I advise you to stop trying to call them."

I do not at all feel any remorse for those DJs losing their jobs. They ought to be fired, and not just for this .

Maybe they were actually expecting a phone call from the Queen that day?
phantomtantrum 7th-Dec-2012 06:50 pm (UTC)
Good, I hope they feel really shitty about what they did. It wasn't funny to begin with, and they are just idiotic people who need to LOOK AT THEIR LIVES, LOOK AT THEIR CHOICES.
deadendqueen16 7th-Dec-2012 06:51 pm (UTC)
I feel like shock jock radio hosts are generally just the worst.
squishinator 7th-Dec-2012 06:51 pm (UTC)
Why did she commit suicide, though? DId she lose her job over this?
hershelwalker 7th-Dec-2012 06:56 pm (UTC)
yeah, this is what I'm not getting.
liberateourtime 7th-Dec-2012 06:58 pm (UTC)
maybe she was already depressed and this kind of tipped her over the edge?
buncha_cruncha 7th-Dec-2012 06:57 pm (UTC)
I thought I read they weren't planning to fire her or anything.
deadendqueen16 7th-Dec-2012 06:57 pm (UTC)
Maybe out of embarrassment? Or maybe she thought she would lose her job and not be able to find another once it all got out?
rctshack 7th-Dec-2012 06:58 pm (UTC)
They were actually backing her and supporting her. I think there is more to her life story than this one incident, it was just the cherry on top, my guess.
mynamehere07 7th-Dec-2012 07:01 pm (UTC)
They haven't given a reason. From what I am reading, she wasn't facing any disciplinary action. But who knows what sort of private emails, calls, etc.. she was getting from intense fans.
in_suburb 7th-Dec-2012 07:02 pm (UTC)
Maybe the police told her that she had endangered national security, etc. and she got scared?
theitalianchick 7th-Dec-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
I'm just puzzled too.
sarahsumbrella 7th-Dec-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
I assume she thought she'd never work again, her life would be a source of constant ridicule etc.
doleo 7th-Dec-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
i think the hospital was supporting her? but my guess is the backlash from the media and fans of the royals.
wauwy 7th-Dec-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
Pretty sure everyone's assuming it's because of this prank, because it makes a tasty tragic story.
yehyijun 7th-Dec-2012 09:38 pm (UTC)
Depression, the immense feeling of guilt and losing face, who knows. When you're in deep shit for something you did (even though the hospital's backing you), it can affect you pretty seriously, especially if you're depressed. Maybe she felt that all hope was lost and that she could never recover from a mistake that made such big headlines (especially if it was more serious than just what the media has been reporting) that the only way was suicide. Who knows.
youth_depraved 7th-Dec-2012 06:53 pm (UTC)
have the producers been fired form the station, though? especially if things like this prank have happened on the station before, it seems like the producers of the show should be yanked as well.
ohthyhorror 7th-Dec-2012 06:55 pm (UTC)
wait..the nurse committed suicide???? D: god they're such fucking shit...
buncha_cruncha 7th-Dec-2012 06:56 pm (UTC)
GOOD.
liberateourtime 7th-Dec-2012 06:57 pm (UTC)
does anyone know how they managed to convince the hospital that it was the queen in the first place?
forbidden_john 7th-Dec-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
They just referred to 'My grandaughter Kate'. It's perfectly viable that a family member would ring up for an update.

That said, it was lax security by the hospital. Personal details shouldn't be given out over the phone. It's near impossible to verify a person's identity.
botica 7th-Dec-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
That's what is so crazy. They didn't verify anything - they used horrible english accents, said it was the queen, and wanted to know how Kate was doing. They were stifling giggles the whole time. I remember listening and thinking "this is the worst prank call ever; who the hell would be fooled by this"
wauwy 7th-Dec-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
There are lots of people who don't speak English as their first language and who wouldn't pick up on those cues.

Not saying that's what happened here, but it's more than possible.
sarahsumbrella 7th-Dec-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
They got someone to impersonate her voice
rctshack 7th-Dec-2012 06:58 pm (UTC)
Can I point out that this is the same site where everyone here praises Anonymous for doing illegal and wrong acts which cause people distress. I know it's not exactly the same as this, but it's in the same vein. It's interesting coming here and seeing everyone saying the DJ's should go to jail, when no one could have predicted this happening like this.

What they did was wrong and truthfully, whoever the >>> PRODUCER <<< of the show is should be the one to blame and be fired, because I doubt the DJ's (unless they are the producers themselves) were the ones who set this up.

This woman who committed suicide was not being fired, her hospital was backing her up, so her suicide amounts to most likely were many issues over time mixed with this moment. And sadly the truth of the matter is that this nurse DID do something wrong. She shouldn't have given out that info without making sure she was talking to the real person first. It's sort of how this thing usually works in the real world. It's sad and terrible, but everyone here is acting like the DJ's called with a mission to have someone die... obviously that wasn't the case and obviously it was something no one could have predicted. Feel free to go back to the post about it on here earlier this week and see how many people mentioned suicide?

Anyways, I think them being let go is big enough punishment for something that wasn't meant to hurt anyone and I feel terrible that the nurse felt like her life wasn't living, it's always sad when someone takes their lives, but it's also worse when people start blaming others for why that person did it. This could have just been the cherry on top to a horrible life.

This whole situation is awful.
youth_depraved 7th-Dec-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
For real, I don't think people realize that the DJ's on air (for the most part), do what the producers tell them to do. The DJ's should have immediately been like "oh hell no we're not doing this" when the producers came up to them about it, so everyone's in the wrong here. But I really don't get how none of the producers have gotten any flack for this
rctshack 7th-Dec-2012 07:32 pm (UTC)
Exactly. And in all reality it seems like they didn't even think they were going to even get through to the hospital, let alone talk to anyone important... and when it did get to that point I don't think they understood that it was time to stop the prank. It was an unplanned series of events. The prank was a terrible one, but these DJ's were probably told to do it, didn't question it because their boss told them to, and now they are the ones the world is looking at and saying to go to jail. I feel sorry for everyone involved.
sarahsumbrella 7th-Dec-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
What do Anonymous have to do with this. What in the world is this comment.
mynamehere07 7th-Dec-2012 07:07 pm (UTC)
ITA.

There is no way anyone could have predicted this would be the outcome of this prank.
botica 7th-Dec-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)

For the most part I agree, as I said elsewhere the DJs were just incredibly naive about the whole thing. I don't think it even remotely occurred to them that they would actually get put through, and they were ill prepared to handle the situation. They absolutely had to be taken off the air. But at the same time the producers oversee this kind of thing day in and day out and deserve just as much blame as well.

I don't think anyone intended for someone to die or even for privacy to be grossly violated, I think they were just plain stupid, expected to be hung up on, and will just have to live with this for the rest of their lives.

Media and entertainment will just have to consider it a lesson learned. I can't even begin to speculate what was going on with the poor woman.

ONTD almost never praises Anons for doing something wrong though. The only time ONTD sides with Anonymous is when they do something to help save animals or to catch a bad guy.

Besides, Anons aren't one group. I guess I could be called an Anon, but you won't catch me doing pranks OR saving anyone. What I'm trying to say here is that there are so many different types of Anons that it's just much better to say "Some Anonymous" instead of just "Anonymous"-like saying "Some brunettes" instead of all of them LOL!

And most people, that includes other Anons, hate hate HATE when a few rowdy Anons go off and harass/mess around with someone. Like, if this nurse thing happened on 4chan I can absolutely promise you there would be more disgust than anything else no matter what board it happened on-PLUS the other boards would shit on the board that started it and all hell would break loose with cross-shit posting and arguments flaring for days. Idk, just wanted to throw all that out there.
lcacbc 7th-Dec-2012 07:01 pm (UTC)
Well I bet they're feeling guilty now. But seriously, never prank call a hospital.
mhfromnh 7th-Dec-2012 07:01 pm (UTC)
whatever happened to "is your refrigerator running?" and Seymour Butts?
sarahsumbrella 7th-Dec-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
Oh man, she was married with 2 kids....right before Christmas? Oh God help her poor family.
littlehayzay 7th-Dec-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
also i just listened to the clip again, clearly the radio station bosses were the ones who got the phone number for the hospital b/c 'someone has just handed us the number of the hospital where kate is'
it_llbeyourname 7th-Dec-2012 07:14 pm (UTC)
ugh what is WRONG with these people
wauwy 7th-Dec-2012 07:15 pm (UTC)
ikr? duh.
wauwy 7th-Dec-2012 07:15 pm (UTC)
I think people would still be blaming and mocking the gullible receptionist/nurse for being gullible if she hadn't killed herself, t b q h.
theitalianchick 7th-Dec-2012 07:16 pm (UTC)
yes, exactly. I'm nhf the pitchforks tbh.
bungalowtick 7th-Dec-2012 07:19 pm (UTC)
exactly. human nature at its finest.
ruby_chalice 8th-Dec-2012 01:01 am (UTC)
Only if they're 12. Anyone with an ounce of maturity would question the mindset of people who prank call a bloody hospital.
winninghearts 7th-Dec-2012 07:15 pm (UTC)
morning radio DJs are almost all absolute scum
