Tragedy As Receptionist Who Connected Kate Middleton Prank Callers Commits Suicide

1354891512023.cached

The prank phone call saga in which two Australian DJs impersonated the queen and got connected to a nurse looking after Kate Middleton took a tragic turn today after the receptionist who put the call through reportedly committed suicide.

The Daily Mail is reporting that a receptionist at the private King Edward hospital which treated the Duchess of Cambridge was found at an address yards away from King Edward VII Hospital, where she worked, just before 9.30am yesterday.

Under a cut for talk of suicide/depression. Collapse )

handsdowntoo 7th-Dec-2012 04:27 pm (UTC)
The DJ apparently asked her after that portion if she had ever had sex other than the rape. They kept going.
thishollywood 7th-Dec-2012 04:33 pm (UTC)
instead of having dead air time. derr.
qween_tartii 7th-Dec-2012 04:38 pm (UTC)
actually the segment was cut off more or less straight away.

and the DJ's "is that the only experience you've had?" question - hideous though it might have been - can at least in part me put down to his being shocked and not knowing how to respond.

i'm not totally defending them - the segment was completely tasteless to begin with and shouldn't have been on air, because why the fuck are you asking a fourteen year old about her sexual experiences to begin with? - but they really were caught on the wrong foot with that one.
sugarbobbin 7th-Dec-2012 04:19 pm (UTC)
I want to know if that mother ever got what is coming to her. That poor girl, I hope she got help and away from that toxic woman.
lisse_pitch13 7th-Dec-2012 04:20 pm (UTC)
WHAT IN THE KINGDOM. I CANT RLY EVEN RN.
aussiebeth 7th-Dec-2012 04:21 pm (UTC)
i work in a coroner's office and it's easy for people to speculate but really you don't know what this woman had going on in her personal life.

an inquest probably won't be able to prove shit against these DJ's though so they'll be let off the hook however their reputation is damaged forever.

i'm just so glad it was not Hamish and Andy that did this but I'm sure they wouldn't have been so stupid.
arcadiacake 7th-Dec-2012 04:22 pm (UTC)
The station has just replayed the hoax call so in their eyes they're probably legends ...

What the fuck is wrong with people?

Disgusting.
aussiebeth 7th-Dec-2012 04:30 pm (UTC)
woahh, they JUST replayed it? i get that it's like the middle of the night or some shit in Sydney right now so it's probably all pre-recorded and the studio is empty. shiiiit. interested to see what happens to these two DJs. I really didn't think any DJ would be worse than Kyle.
soapboxrhetoric 7th-Dec-2012 05:46 pm (UTC)
what the fuck is wrong with people!?!?!?
cutiepie0304 7th-Dec-2012 06:51 pm (UTC)
Can I ask what you do at the coroner's office? I've a degree in anthropology and I'm considering studying forensic anth in grad school. Just wondered if there'd be any internship opportunities or something for a person in my field.
arcadiacake 7th-Dec-2012 04:21 pm (UTC)
The Australian radio station has just replayed the hoax call.

i haven't followed this story, was exactly did the receptionist do when she answered the call? did she accidentally leak information about kate?
die2nitelive4ev 7th-Dec-2012 04:24 pm (UTC)
yep
illiade 7th-Dec-2012 04:25 pm (UTC)
She put them through to a nurse after they said they were the queen checking on Kate
___heyvanity 7th-Dec-2012 04:57 pm (UTC)
Honestly, the information that was given out wasn't that terrible. It was just like ~Kate is resting, she's been on IV's, she should be released fairly soon.~ That's it.
ukbedeviled 7th-Dec-2012 04:24 pm (UTC)
wtf :(
wt_hell_fred 7th-Dec-2012 04:24 pm (UTC)
The DJ deleted his twitter. I was just checking it out and now it's gone. This is all so sad.
die2nitelive4ev 7th-Dec-2012 04:30 pm (UTC)
I nearly felt bad for them because they would should be feeling so guilty about this and really how could they know this would happen but then I read their other antics and just can't.
loverelapse 7th-Dec-2012 09:15 pm (UTC)
like seriously fuck off
francesbcobain 7th-Dec-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
yes poor them. rme.
aussiebeth 7th-Dec-2012 04:32 pm (UTC)
looks like they've both deleted it. So they're aware of the death at least and not still sleeping (time difference y'all)
yehyijun 7th-Dec-2012 04:28 pm (UTC)
That whole show is a fucking mess. The hosts of the show are assholes who are out to ruin other peoples' lives and the mother that was on it is one too. Ugh.
tigerfan28 7th-Dec-2012 04:30 pm (UTC)
Holy shit. That poor woman and her family. This is fucked up.
demi32 7th-Dec-2012 04:30 pm (UTC)
Very sad. I despise pranks especially people you don't know, public humiliation, and bullying. You never know what's going on inside a person. Not everything is funny or making fun of someone is entertaining.

This person was publicly humiliated from a prank gone bad, and no telling what else she was going through. This may have been the one thing that sent her over the edge. Especially during this time of the year. Depression is nothing to make fun of at all.

. I feel for her family, friends and whoever knew her.

rip

Agreed with this whole comment.

When I saw hoax, I thought it was fake at first. So sad.

OMG D:

woooowwwwww
nekonekox 7th-Dec-2012 04:31 pm (UTC)
I'm sorry, I understand these pranksters are assholes, but in this case they didn't abuse anyone. Is that right? They just impersonated someone, the Queen, and the receptionist didn't pick it up and transferred the call. How is that their fault? They should be fired for all the things they did before, but I don't see why they should be fired for this particular prank. The receptionist wasn't good enough for that particular task. Or will you say that pranksters or other people (consider this: criminals and terrorists) are going to be kind to the receptionist and tell them they really are not who they said they were?
chandyland11 7th-Dec-2012 04:37 pm (UTC)
...The prank should have never even taken place to begin with. It's extremely reasonable to assume that calling a hospital, impersonating the Queen and asking to speak to Kate's doctor is going to have at least SOME very negative consequences if the hospital staff were to fall for it. It's not at all a reach to assume that the nurse who divulged the information or the receptionist who allowed the call to go through would lose their job over this. And you should NEVER put another person's career on the line for the sake of a stupid laugh. EVER. Period.

It's not an issue of whether or not the receptionist was "good enough" for her job (which, frankly, is a pretty disgusting, victim-blaming perspective to take in light of what happened). It's an issue of broadcasting ethics. The call should never have been made, and the DJs ARE directly responsible for the repercussions of their "joke" which, in this case, cost a struggling wife and mother her own life.
ediesedgwick 7th-Dec-2012 04:39 pm (UTC)
Yeah, the "responsible" thing would have been to pre-tape the call in case anything went wrong, and then scrap the segment when they actually got the info... or like correct the nurse as she was about to give out info when they realized she thought it was legit.
qween_tartii 7th-Dec-2012 04:50 pm (UTC)
okay sure it was an extremely ill-judged prank but if you listen to the audio it is plain that they did not expect to be taken seriously - their accents are appalling, they're clearly not even trying, and they actually sound as surprised as fuck when their call gets put through. they didn't set out to hurt anybody, or get anyone fired, they probably thought they'd just get shut down right away and that would be that.

so yeah it is a horrible thing that has happened but that doesn't change the fact that the hospital also fucked up at their end - there is no way that phone call should have been taken seriously.
demented_21 7th-Dec-2012 04:52 pm (UTC)
imo it's not victim blaming to say that the receptionist didn't do her job. What if an air traffic controller causes a plane crash and then they kill themselves, would it be victim blaming if the report came out saying they were at fault? Suicide doesn't magically/retroatcively make someone's previous actions correct or appropriate or adequate. (I'm not comparing the two situations at all btw, I'm exaggerating for effect, because I think that "victim blaming" doesn't apply here)

Also, I assume there is a protocol in place for calls like that, it's gotta be more than "hey I'm royal X, wassup?". I don't know the details of the prank but still. It would have been impossible for the DJs to predict this outcome. I agree with you that they could have predicted someone getting fired over this (which, you're right, is another reason why this prank was a terrible thing to do). But the most predictable outcome would have been for the receptionist to hang up on them. They are responsible for their actions (especially for broadcasting medical information, and also for being unfunny idiots) but the suicide? I don't believe so.
nekonekox 8th-Dec-2012 12:37 pm (UTC)
Let me get this straight. Normal, average people should have their safety, both physical and information-wise, secured by the staff of the hospital they are staying in. However, in this case we are speaking of the royal family of GB, people who may be targeted by terrorists, and you are saying that the people who's the first line of defense in regards to information on the patient doesn't need to be enough qualified to handle those calls? Or are you saying that potential attackers will be ethical enough to say "girl, I don't want you to lose your job, so I will tell you that I plan to attack that royal family member so you will end this call?". Think about it.
thishollywood 7th-Dec-2012 04:40 pm (UTC)
the ppl who did the other stuff mentioned in the article r different than the 1s who did the prank
vehiclesshockme 7th-Dec-2012 04:52 pm (UTC)
Even if you don't take this woman's death into account the prank was still in extremely poor taste. Someone there should have considered the possible consequences for prank calling a hospital. I mean lets face facts you just don't go to a hospital when everything feels like rainbows and kittens. They didn't know what her condition was. What if Kate had miscarried?
