Author and screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis took to Twitter on Wednesday night to share some thoughts about "Zero Dark Thirty," claiming the film's director, Kathryn Bigelow, is only given critical praise because she's a female.
"Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man," he wrote. "But since she's a very hot woman she's really overrated."
Bigelow won the Oscar for Best Director in 2010 for "The Hurt Locker," a gritty look into the Iraq War. Bigelow linked up with "Hurt Locker" screenwriter Mark Boal again for this year's "Zero Dark Thirty," which focuses on raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan. The film is being hailed as another Oscar favorite and has already been named as the best film of 2012 by the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review.
Condemnation came swiftly as a number of Twitter users mocked Ellis' claim. Multiple Twitter users said Ellis was actually the one who is overrated, while others simply expressed shock that he would be so brash.
Those surprised by Ellis' tweet, however, probably haven't been following his account for long. Huffington Post Books Editor Andrew Losowsky took Ellis to task in September, in a post titled "Why We're Unfollowing Bret Easton Ellis":
Last year, he compared watching TV show Glee to "stepping in a puddle of HIV." Last month, he said on Twitter that an actor was too openly gay to play a heterosexual character. In July he called an unpopular figure "a complete and total old-school fucking Hollywood loser." When JD Salinger died, he tweeted "Yeah!! Thank God he's finally dead. I've been waiting for this day for-fucking-ever. Party tonight!!!" Today he called David Foster Wallace (who didn't like Easton Ellis's work either) "the most tedious, overrated, tortured, pretentious writer of my generation."

(I do think The Hurt Locker was incredibly overrated though)

agreed that we need to stop giving this shithead more attention though.
Though I totally disagree with his assessment of her filmography and aesthetic as "mildly interesting". Even though I wasn't too crazy about THL, I do think highly of Bigelow based on Strange Days and Near Dark. And of course, Point Break was delightful as hell.
In summary: Back off, Warchild. Seriously.
I would have accepted anything to stop Avatar getting that fucking Oscar though. ANY. THING.
lol it really irritates me when people conflate sexual orientation with... everything else
edit: this ofc does not apply to the princess diaries, the most defining movie of our generation

And, yes, I think he's probably right about Bigelow - there are certainly a lot more talented female directors deserving critical recognition. Bigelow is doing a great job at winning by playing a man's game (seems like the artistic equivalent of women wearing power suits). That isn't to say she is manipulating the situation, but that her interests fall into line with what's generally acceptable and laudable from academy members (these people gave Crash an Oscar). I think a woman making movies about women (like Kelly Reichardt, Catherine Breillat, or Sarah Polley) have a harder time getting critical recognition.
All of that said, I fucking love Bret Easton Ellis's books (not a fan of him as a person though).
And didn't he bash KBigs last time she won an Oscar? Must piss him off that she's going strong for a second nom and possible win.
in all seriousness though its very telling when someone like him goes for a woman's looks or gender instead of her work. butthurt is nagl on anyone
Because he's a huge attention whore, and it gets him a lot of attention.
A part of me still believes that he doesn't truly believe half of the things he says, and that he's only saying it because he knows it'll make the press. But, I think that's the part of me that likes his work, and I'm starting to give up on this theory since he's relentless in saying this crap. Either way, he really is one of those people who has been ruined for me due to his Twitter.
I hate this, I hate it so much. I used to follow a ton of celebrities until the reelection came around, and it was like a fucking switch when off and the stupid flooded my dash. Its so disappointing. The people I have on there now were fine, until a fave (celebrity) of mine began talking about people who purchase cars and can't make payments or whatever tf, its judgey as hell and my respect has been lost.
Wasn't his biggest fame from Less Than Zero which is like 30 years old?
just another white powder
