Before we get into this, a caveat: James Cameron can probably sleep soundly in his bed for a while yet. The only place in which Skyfall is bigger at the box office than Avatar is the UK. But that’s no mean feat in itself, given that Avatar was, until this week, the highest-grossing movie of all time at the UK Box Office.
Sorry, I’ve said that backwards. What I mean is, Skyfall is now officially highest-grossing movie of all time, in the UK, having taken a whopping £94,277,612 (somewhere in the region of $152,000,000) in just 40-odd days, and it’s still on general release.
Avatar, on the other hand, managed to gross a relatively paltry £94,025,632 in 11 months. Barely worth getting off the sofa for, really.
Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, the film’s producers, told Film3Sixty: “We’re overwhelmed with gratitude to the cinema-going audiences in the UK who have made Skyfall the highest grossing film of all time.
“We are very proud of this film and thank everybody, especially Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes, who have contributed to its success.”
“I am incredibly proud of the amazing heights to which this film continues to soar and wish to again congratulate all involved on reaching such a tremendous milestone,” said Gary Barber, Chairman and CEO, MGM.
Peter Taylor, Managing Director, Sony Pictures Releasing UK, added: “It seems particularly fitting in 2012 that the latest James Bond adventure should become the highest grossing movie ever, marking the fiftieth anniversary of one of our truly iconic cultural characters in record breaking style.”
