I kind of agree. I hate generalisations of women's lives/rights in the past; I know an extraordinary number of otherwise intelligent and educated people who assume that women (in the UK at least) were these totally sexually oppressed and repressed, non-working, non-voting housewives up until around 1920. Same goes for people who assume that gay men and women were treated the same, and always brutally.

That said, I wish fantasy authors/creators would stop using history to justify sexism/racism/everything else in their works. I can stand it in ASOIAF only because it's vaguely well written (though the number of people who hate Sansa for her femininity/perceived meekness ...)
