Vegan Anne Hathaway flaunts 25-lb weight loss

Actress Anne Hathaway, who lost 25 pounds on a crash diet for the film, "Les Misérables," looks sporty and sassy in the January 2013 issue of Glamour.

The slender 5-foot-8 Anne dons a white tank top and black underwear that accentuate her lean thighs. Hathaway, 30, admitted she essentially starved herself to look the part of the emaciated Fantine in the tragedy, "Les Misérables."

"I had to be obsessive about it; the idea was to look near death," Hathaway told Vogue. "Looking back on the whole experience, it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway."

Anne lost 10 pounds before shooting began, and then lost another 15 pounds during a two-week break in filming by eating only two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day. Hathaway's competitive personality enabled her to stick to her extreme low-calorie diet.

"I like to fight for a job," she says. "You feel like you've emerged from the scrap, and you're like, 'OK, this one's mine. Did it. Done.' "

Transforming herself physically is nothing new for the dedicated Anne, who worked out five days a week to play Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises." In addition to gym workouts, Hathaway underwent stunt training, did strength exercises as well as 90 minutes of dance every day.

Anne, who switched to a vegan diet while training for "The Dark Knight Rises," has really embraced the plant-based eating plan.

"I don't go the soy-meat route; I have a really plant-based diet," she said. "So I wind up cooking at home a lot. Kale is amazing. Spelt [a kind of wheat] pasta is amazing. I can't do the white-flour stuff. It makes me really ill."

I wouldn't be surprised, because I am always completely starving and it makes me super cranky. :(

Why are you starving yourself?
sunktheglow 2nd-Dec-2012 01:17 pm (UTC)
I'm not, really, I'm just always hungry since I gave up meat.

Are you getting enough protein? If you're not replacing meat protein with other protein, you should. If you're not vegan, most greek yogurts have a lot of protein (I think Chobani and Fage have the most. Beware, some brands don't have much protein at all.) You might need B12 too.

I started taking a b12 supplement last week and I'm hoping that'll make me feel better, but as far as protein, I do eat Fage greek yogurt and I have soy protein shakes every other day! I think I just need to get used to not feeling bursting-to-the-seams full, honestly. Or incorporate more healthy carbs into my diet since I haven't been eating bread or rice.

I would definitely incorporate more carbs into your diet then and see if that helps. Oatmeal, quinoa, brown rice, apples, etc. I used to never go above the suggested serving size of any carb, but now I eat a cup of oatmeal (300 calories by itself) and it's filling versus trying to get by on a measly amount.

If you're up for it, sometimes I whisk an egg into my oatmeal. If you whisk really fast, you can't taste it at all. You could also whisk cottage cheese into it. Then you have a magical meal of healthy carbs and protein. If you add unsweetened cocoa, it's extra delicious!

Thanks for the recs! I'm going to try oatmeal. I'm still a little sketchy with most carbs, even the healthy kinds, because they happen to be really triggery foods for me (if I eat them, I won't want to stop).

I'm not sure I can tolerate eggs, but I will give it a shot. Cottage cheese should be palatable in small amounts at least, and I just got Ghiradelli cocoa powder, so this sounds delicious!

Definitely understandable. If you do try it, I promise you don't taste the egg if that's what you're worried about. I absolutely hate eggs, so I would never eat it if you could taste/feel it. It just gives the oatmeal a custardy texture.

I use Ghiradelli unsweetened cocoa powder too, it's the best! If you use sweetener (truvia, sugar, maple syrup, etc), definitely use some to counter the bitterness of the cocoa powder. I eat big breakfasts to get through basically a non-lunch in my classes, so it's a big meal, about 400 calories with the egg, sweetener, and cocoa powder. :)

m not vegetarian but i know if i ever wanted to be i would have to plan a lot of meals heavy in like beans & nuts & tofu (although im not a fan of it) to make me feel full & like i was eating hearty protein-full meals
sunktheglow 2nd-Dec-2012 03:21 pm (UTC)
I have a nut allergy so that eliminates that, but I never seem to get full off of serving sizes of tofu and beans.

if you never feel fully satisfied and never completely stop being hungry, that's probably your body's way of telling you that you aren't getting enough nutrients. js.
sunktheglow 2nd-Dec-2012 03:39 pm (UTC)
I don't know how that's possible considering I've talked to a nutritionist who's assigned me a specific meal plan and told me what vitamins to take, but okay!

Can you have wheat protein aka seitan? The asian market I go to has amazing mock duck in the freezer section. The texture and taste were just like meat.

I've never heard of such a thing, but I'm going to give it a go! Thanks for the recommendation!

Then you obviously aren't feeding yourself properly.
