Vegan Anne Hathaway flaunts 25-lb weight loss

Actress Anne Hathaway, who lost 25 pounds on a crash diet for the film, "Les Misérables," looks sporty and sassy in the January 2013 issue of Glamour.

The slender 5-foot-8 Anne dons a white tank top and black underwear that accentuate her lean thighs. Hathaway, 30, admitted she essentially starved herself to look the part of the emaciated Fantine in the tragedy, "Les Misérables."

"I had to be obsessive about it; the idea was to look near death," Hathaway told Vogue. "Looking back on the whole experience, it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway."

Anne lost 10 pounds before shooting began, and then lost another 15 pounds during a two-week break in filming by eating only two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day. Hathaway's competitive personality enabled her to stick to her extreme low-calorie diet.

"I like to fight for a job," she says. "You feel like you've emerged from the scrap, and you're like, 'OK, this one's mine. Did it. Done.' "

Transforming herself physically is nothing new for the dedicated Anne, who worked out five days a week to play Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises." In addition to gym workouts, Hathaway underwent stunt training, did strength exercises as well as 90 minutes of dance every day.

Anne, who switched to a vegan diet while training for "The Dark Knight Rises," has really embraced the plant-based eating plan.

"I don't go the soy-meat route; I have a really plant-based diet," she said. "So I wind up cooking at home a lot. Kale is amazing. Spelt [a kind of wheat] pasta is amazing. I can't do the white-flour stuff. It makes me really ill."

I gave up meat really recently minus 3 oz of fish once a week and I lost about 15 lbs in a month... ridiculous.

I lost weight when I stopped being vegetarian, but that's probably because I ate a lot of pasta, bagels, ice cream, and beer. I hate cooking.

Yeah, me too. In all seriousness, I stopped being veg because I found out I was insulin resistant and basically needed meat.

But also because I was the worst junk food vegetarian in the world.

Luckily, I love to cook and I generally stay away from processed foods because I am inherently angry at carbs, but there are days that I'm lazy and I want to eat bad things that I just go hungry instead or I go buy a veggie platter.

I was definitely a junk food vegetarian in college, but was healthier in high school when I was living at home. I gave it up when I moved to Vietnam. Now, I still don't eat much meat, but if I need some protein I don't really think twice about having some chicken or whatever because I'm not trying to stay within a label.

Lol same! I just recently started eating meat again because I was only eating like french fries or bagels and shit. I just don't have enough time to eat a balanced diet while in college. I eat maybe like 1 or 2 things/meals a day and I wasn't getting enough vitamins.

Same here, along with being sensitive to gluten. It makes my bladder hurt! I feel so much better now, even though I'm kind of super-jealous of vegetarians and vegans who can eat all of that lovely quinoa and sprouted wheat berries and unf.

Do you feel like that was a lot of fat loss, or mostly water weight + slow digestion from the meat?
sunktheglow 2nd-Dec-2012 08:44 pm (UTC)
I'd love to think it was all weight loss, but realistically it's probably a lot of water weight being that I don't have that much to lose.

i almost never eat meat now (minus fish) and i'm hoping it slowly has that effect :/
