Vegan Anne Hathaway flaunts 25-lb weight loss

Actress Anne Hathaway, who lost 25 pounds on a crash diet for the film, "Les Misérables," looks sporty and sassy in the January 2013 issue of Glamour.

The slender 5-foot-8 Anne dons a white tank top and black underwear that accentuate her lean thighs. Hathaway, 30, admitted she essentially starved herself to look the part of the emaciated Fantine in the tragedy, "Les Misérables."

"I had to be obsessive about it; the idea was to look near death," Hathaway told Vogue. "Looking back on the whole experience, it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway."

Anne lost 10 pounds before shooting began, and then lost another 15 pounds during a two-week break in filming by eating only two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day. Hathaway's competitive personality enabled her to stick to her extreme low-calorie diet.

"I like to fight for a job," she says. "You feel like you've emerged from the scrap, and you're like, 'OK, this one's mine. Did it. Done.' "

Transforming herself physically is nothing new for the dedicated Anne, who worked out five days a week to play Catwoman in "The Dark Knight Rises." In addition to gym workouts, Hathaway underwent stunt training, did strength exercises as well as 90 minutes of dance every day.

Anne, who switched to a vegan diet while training for "The Dark Knight Rises," has really embraced the plant-based eating plan.

"I don't go the soy-meat route; I have a really plant-based diet," she said. "So I wind up cooking at home a lot. Kale is amazing. Spelt [a kind of wheat] pasta is amazing. I can't do the white-flour stuff. It makes me really ill."

I'm trying to diminish my intake of meat but the way people get once they turn vegetarian or vegan scares me. They're so aggressive about their lifestyle.
starchain 2nd-Dec-2012 11:21 am (UTC)
That's obviously only my experience but I've had people telling me they didn't consider me a human being because I ate meat.
sunktheglow 2nd-Dec-2012 11:21 am (UTC)
I realized I was getting really hyper-vigilante about it, but I think it was because I was really jealous of people eating cheeseburgers.
konvict_gaga 2nd-Dec-2012 11:21 am (UTC)
Not all of them are, but I've come across A LOT who are. Especially on Tumblr. Saying shit like, ILL FUCKING SHOVE THAT BURGER DOWN UR THROAT SO U FUCKING DIE U WORTHLESS MEAT EATING PIECE OF SHIT

On the other hand, I have several vegan/vegetarian friends that I forget don't eat meat because they don't make a huge deal out of it.
dovecage 2nd-Dec-2012 11:22 am (UTC)
Not everyone. I've been vegetarian since I was 11 and generally, I don't give a shit about animals.
alouds 2nd-Dec-2012 11:25 am (UTC)
that's because educated vegans realize that veganism is much more than a diet, it's an ethical and political stance in this world since nonhumans are not treated fairly. hopefully one day you will give up meat and animal products fully. if you want to know why vegans are so "aggressive" about their lifestyle, check out vegan authors Carol Adams (who used to be vegetarian but now is vegan), and Gary Francione.
h0tfuss 2nd-Dec-2012 11:26 am (UTC)
Then just don't talk about it.
tell_a_tale_4_u 2nd-Dec-2012 11:32 am (UTC)
OMG my flatmate is a vegan and ALL she EVER talks about is how evil I am and how she's the holy grail and she and 3 of her friends tried to ban all meat in the campus restaurants and only serve vegan stuff.
I mean, IDGAF what you eat, not eat, do and not do. But if you shove it in my face and tell ME what I have to do, eat, not do, not eat, we're gonna have a problem.
If I had known she was a vegan, I would have never allowed her in my flat. SMH seriously. Every conversation includes the word vegan. Raging.
lonelymoon 2nd-Dec-2012 11:46 am (UTC)
Ugh I know. I hate to admit it but I was such a douche when I turned vegetarian as a teen.
patentpending 2nd-Dec-2012 12:03 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I don't understand why anyone would feel the need to constantly harp on about it especially when you didn't ask, and then after they bring it up and you make it clear that you don't care to hear them continue to go on about it, you're not open to the idea or you plain just don't want to discuss it, they do it anyway. That's not helpful nor is it convincing, it's just nagging and annoying.
bluekrinkle 2nd-Dec-2012 12:08 pm (UTC)
I wasn't and I went veggie cold turkey (hehe, turkey).
My perception as a previous vegetarian and now pescatarian is that meat eaters get automatically defensive when I mention my diet.
derrobitch 2nd-Dec-2012 12:14 pm (UTC)
miitant vegans are the worst. i know girls who compare eating animals to rape and the holocaust. it's like, get your shit together.

anyway i'm cutting down on my meat intake too. i've cut out all red meat (although sometimes i'll have a sausage at a barbeque) and am trying to cut out chicken too. i still love fish and seafood though, i don't want to give that up yet/ever bloop
ohbubbajoan 2nd-Dec-2012 12:18 pm (UTC)
i don't talk about this with others people unless they ask me or the topic comes out, like last week on my biology class my teacher was commenting about how vegan/vegetarian diet left people without lots of nutrients (wrong btw) with a mocking tone and well i couldn't keep quiet.
If you decide for this diet you'll see the amount of assholes who'll stat/ask lot of bullshit about this. after a while our patience start to wear thin.
eyduh 2nd-Dec-2012 12:25 pm (UTC)
when somebody goes all militant vegetarian or vegan on me, i tell them i don't care, that i like the way meat tastes and that human beings=/=animals, so you can't compare my eating meat to holocaust
mai_shiranui 2nd-Dec-2012 12:39 pm (UTC)
I used to know a couple of those. Christ, they were so annoying.
railway 2nd-Dec-2012 12:39 pm (UTC)
I used to be a vegan. I am no longer a vegan because apparently to be a vegan it's not JUST not eating, wearing, or using animal products, you are also fundamentally required to be a raging fucking asshole to all non-vegans at every given opportunity.

Thanks, but I'll eat meat and be a nice person instead.
therearewords 2nd-Dec-2012 12:40 pm (UTC)
Just call yourself a 'flexitarian' and get the aggressive ones of your back.
begravelse 2nd-Dec-2012 12:52 pm (UTC)
That is true. I became a vegetarian because of my health.
However, I get a lot of shit from both vegans and people who eat meat. Especially the latter. So I always try to avoid the subject of my eating habits.
yourscenesucks 2nd-Dec-2012 12:56 pm (UTC)
This is always on the first page of posts where vegans and vegetarians are discussed. A shitstorm of 'OMG IKR' ensues.

But generally there's only one or two aggressively judgey vegans or vegetarians to be found in an entire post. The rest are pretty chill, no?

I think the omnivore's automatic defensiveness is much greater than the veg's desire to discuss it.

aurelia92 2nd-Dec-2012 01:01 pm (UTC)
I don't eat meat at home but I'll eat it when I'm out or if someone else is cooking. I think it's a good balance- I only eat meat maybe twice a month but it's not inconvenient, I don't make other people uncomfortable by pushing my lifestyle down their throat and I don't end up craving it because I do have it occasionally.
tanssiin 2nd-Dec-2012 01:17 pm (UTC)
It's really unfortunate people see vegans and vegetarians this way. I'm a vegetarian and I never bring it up or comment on other peoples' choices, nor do any of the people around me who do not eat meat. Often it's the other way around.. like people notice I don't eat meat, they get so defensive about their meat-eating and I'm just like dude, I really don't give a shit.
agnes_perdita 2nd-Dec-2012 01:21 pm (UTC)
Oh god an acquaintance called me a psychopath for eating pate once. She also called me a borderline sociopath for absentmindedly fiddling with leaves by tearing them along the midrib.
scousing 2nd-Dec-2012 01:42 pm (UTC)
lol this is so stupid. way to make generalizations about the whole vegetarian/vegan population
anderbobo 2nd-Dec-2012 02:17 pm (UTC)
As somebody who is 90% vegan let me tell you it is usually someone else's problem. I NEVER bring it up, but if I decline a free pizza lunch, or cupcake or something then I get interrogated about it. I never comment on what other people eat as it is none of my business but a lot of meat-eaters feel like they can judge my dietary choices. I can't even get mad at Anne for going on about how hardcore vegan she's become, it's no worse than people who are "OMG BACON!!" everything.
baby_mina 2nd-Dec-2012 02:31 pm (UTC)
I've been a vegetarian for over a decade now and the last thing I'd ever want to do would be to shame someone into vegetarianism. I see that as no different from Bible thumpers that want to scare others into converting: It's very rude and presumptuous.

I will talk about the positive aspects of vegetarianism though. The first month after I went vegetarian, I remember feeling so much lighter. Because so few fast food options are really meal fulfilling for a veggie, I cut that out too and became rather lean. Fast food also used to leave me with this greasy feeling after I ate it. It also forced me to try and discover new things and take nutritional value into account. I feel so much better, well energized when eating foods that are good for me than fillers like burgers and fries.
beatlesluv 2nd-Dec-2012 02:38 pm (UTC)
I'm vegetarian...There are plenty of other things you can eat, and it's not that serious for everyone (in terms of behavior). I can't digest meat very well, but I really miss the taste of a cheeseburger (I can make a mean one, but never eat it :/)
nightfury 2nd-Dec-2012 02:55 pm (UTC)
As a vegetarian I can echo some of the other sentiments here about it being everyone else's problem. I refuse to bring the topic of my diet up myself, and when somebody else does (and let me tell you, they do often) I will flat out refuse to talk about it. It never fails, as soon as I start answering their questions about why I'm a vegetarian I'm automatically accused of being an aggressive douchebag trying to force my beliefs on everyone else, even if thats not even close to what I said at all. And believe me I know when I'm being a douchebag. Some times I have to wonder if people's perception of all vegetarians and vegans being "aggressive" is at least partially skewed on account of their own defensiveness.
hoot 2nd-Dec-2012 03:05 pm (UTC)
There's this natural food sandwich shop by my house that used to be all vegan, but the owner a few years ago added some meat options. I've gone in there a couple of times and ordered their crab cake sandwich (because it's fucking AMAZING!) and all the women who work there and the regular customers (who are all vegans) will give me death glares until I leave.

Thankfully I've figured out what days the owner works and only go there when she's working because she's really nice, lol.
myxwill 2nd-Dec-2012 03:08 pm (UTC)
ikr. I like meat and everything, but I am not one of those annoying, LOL I just ate a burger and it was sooooooooooo good type of people to vegan people. Like I know of some people who do it as an excuse to hide their eating disorder.
xleighx 2nd-Dec-2012 03:14 pm (UTC)
not all of us. :)
kimoto 2nd-Dec-2012 03:40 pm (UTC)
It depends on the person really, I'm a vegetarian and some of my friends are too and we generally just don't discuss it with people.
sassalicious 2nd-Dec-2012 03:56 pm (UTC)
That's annoying. I was never an asshole when I was a vegetarian, but I definitely know people who get that way and it's so fucking stupid.
sarahvma 2nd-Dec-2012 03:59 pm (UTC)
I was vegetarian for 5 1/2 years and I eventually quit because I hated people treating me like I was now a fundamentalist douchebag. Also I missed bacon.

But seriously, you won't transform into a new human being. You'll still be you. If anything, you'll be *more* annoyed by the people who act as though they're saving the world with their consumption choices.
solyma 2nd-Dec-2012 04:04 pm (UTC)
i'm a vegetarian and the only time i am an asshole is when they tell me how much they love animals as they're eating meat.
oblivious_frog 2nd-Dec-2012 04:11 pm (UTC)
Generalizing here but the ones that really get upitty about it are vegans.
I've been vegetarian for 10 years and I really don't give a shit what other people eat, it's my choice.
bloolikejazz 2nd-Dec-2012 06:28 pm (UTC)
really? i've been vegetarian for like 6 or 7 years, and vegan for 2 and couldn't give less of a shit what other people eat. everyone in my family eats meat and it never bothers me seeing them eat it.
i just find it gross and the meat production process is disgusting. but it's your body and your choice (as to what you put in it hehe).
stensen 2nd-Dec-2012 06:36 pm (UTC)
We're not all bad. I'll even make my husband pork chops now and again. I just don't like meat is all.
dubiously 2nd-Dec-2012 07:01 pm (UTC)
I just do meatless Mondays. Once every week or two I have buffalo for some red meat, but mostly I just stick to poultry and fish. I really love a good steak, but I've just become so much more aware of how different foods affect my digestion in the last few years.
mikachanyo 2nd-Dec-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
lol this is so inaccurate. you just know shitty people. I've known way more "meat eaters" who will chastise people for not eating meat. hell they will even go after people who don't eat pork for religious reasons.
apolloinlove 3rd-Dec-2012 11:19 pm (UTC)
I'm a vegan and I don't think that I'm aggressive, but people can certainly act pretty aggressive if they find out I'm vegan, so I can see how some people could get frustrated by that and just not want to take shit for it anymore.
sunktheglow 2nd-Dec-2012 11:18 am (UTC)
I gave up meat really recently minus 3 oz of fish once a week and I lost about 15 lbs in a month... ridiculous.
sassalicious 2nd-Dec-2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
I lost weight when I stopped being vegetarian, but that's probably because I ate a lot of pasta, bagels, ice cream, and beer. I hate cooking.
sarahvma 2nd-Dec-2012 04:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, me too. In all seriousness, I stopped being veg because I found out I was insulin resistant and basically needed meat.

But also because I was the worst junk food vegetarian in the world.
dubiously 2nd-Dec-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
Do you feel like that was a lot of fat loss, or mostly water weight + slow digestion from the meat?
emerging 3rd-Dec-2012 02:11 pm (UTC)

calm down. She was probably asked by the magazine and it would probably be worse if she left it a mystery. People share tons of info that isn't conducive to a good diet (actors promoting soft drinks and fast food) and also many share amazing work out routines that are great for your body. It's just an interview about her role... not her giving a speech in a classroom.
letsallchant 3rd-Dec-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
IA. When I was tween, I used to read articles and watch movies about recovering anorexics and try to take tips from their experience. I feel like a lot of young girls do this. When you're young, you're not very smart and are likely to disregard the future consequences and take on "it's not going to happen to me"-style attitude.

It's not her #1 job to be everyone's role model, but that doesn't mean it's wise to divulge the details so flippantly.
aerinsol 4th-Dec-2012 05:44 am (UTC)
