Katy Perry: I'm Not A Feminist

"I am not a feminist, but I do believe in the strength of women."

"I am not a feminist, but I do believe in the strength of women," Katy Perry said Friday during her "Woman of the Year" acceptance speech Year at Billboard's Women In Music 2012 luncheon.

"I don't really like to call myself a role model for my fans. I hope that I am an inspiration for them, especially young women. My mantra, especially for the ['Part Of Me'] film, was: If you believe in yourself, you can be anything."

That empowering message was felt through the room at Capitale, which hosted many of this year's honorees, including Rising Star Carly Rae Jepsen and Atlantic's Julie Greenwald, Billboard's reigning No. 1 female music executive for three years running. But there can always be room for more.

Soo she actually is a feminist but is too dumb to realise that feminist doesn't equal man-hating banshee. Great. That's a new one :/

Look honestly, not white, but do you really think that has shit-all to do with Katy Perry's stance?
alienclit 2nd-Dec-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
But what is it called if you hate white privilege AND gender inequality? Because I'm stumped because I DO consider myself a feminist but I actually do mean it for all women and not just white women. This post has kind of shaken me up because I don't want to be included in a movement that only serves white women. That's fucking dumb. ALL women, women of color, cis, trans, whatever are important to the progression of society. Words are so weird. Maybe I'll just start saying that women are awesome instead of saying I'm a "feminist". Idk. Connotations...

I consider myself a feminist and for ME as long as you support our rights and believe that we are equally to men and we deserve the same respect i don't care if you call yourself a feminist or not, the attitude and actions are more important to me that the label. Some of the most vile and misogynistic womens that I've met in my life refer to themselves as feminist, I've learned that sometimes that label means nothing.
vanishingbee 2nd-Dec-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
gaga has since learned what feminism is and explicitly calls herself a feminist
honeychuckles Re: First kesha and now katy *sigh* well at least this declaration is not as bad as gaga's2nd-Dec-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
This is actually very true. I've had self-declared feminists tell me I should be ashamed of myself as a woman for talking openly about sex or wearing short shorts, so... yah the label means bullshit to me.
yougotthestyle Re: First kesha and now katy *sigh* well at least this declaration is not as bad as gaga's3rd-Dec-2012 02:21 am (UTC)
I'm so late with this reply, in my case was "You shouldn't cook for your boyfriend" she lectured me in front of many other feminist who agreed, she made me feel really bad those are the type of feminist that I don't want to be associated with, i can't see how we are not feminists because i enjoy cooking or because you enjoy wearing short shorts/talk openly about sex, is insane.
xzackb Re: First kesha and now katy *sigh* well at least this declaration is not as bad as gaga's2nd-Dec-2012 05:08 am (UTC)
except gaga has changed her views and has matured. but keep on hating.

manaconda 2nd-Dec-2012 02:45 am (UTC)
lol mte. almost all of them don't, bc it might make their male fans' dicks shrink away
vanishingbee 2nd-Dec-2012 03:04 am (UTC)
seriously, we all know that hollywood is such a bastion of equality and definitely has a baseline of understanding the oppressive dynamics of the world which is reflected in the film & music industry.

o wait
xeroxicide__ 2nd-Dec-2012 02:29 am (UTC)
I wouldn't expect any different from her... The deepest she gets is all that's written in the lyrics of Firework.

But sometimes I do feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind trying to start again! Use me, I am a bag!
klmnumbers 2nd-Dec-2012 02:31 am (UTC)
I hate that so many women are afraid of the title of feminist. If you support women, then surprise! you're a feminist. People just associate the extremists of the movement as being representative of the entire group. So frustrating to see so many women proclaim that they're not feminists.
gee 2nd-Dec-2012 02:39 am (UTC)
It's not just extremists tho....I mean, it's not hard to come across ignorant ass 'feminists' irl or online. Most of which tend to be white, usually saying offensive or privileged crap in the name of ~women~, and then when they get called on it they get pissed. It's just about the general attitudes and ideas that lots of feminists hold.

Or maybe I am just unlucky lol.
klmnumbers 2nd-Dec-2012 02:42 am (UTC)
No, I agree. I think I made the point I tried to make here more eloquently elsewhere. I believe that many/most of the historical movements/subgroups in feminism fail at including woc, transwomen, etc. But I don't think it invalidates the entire movement. There are some subsets of feminism which DO include and specifically give voice to non-western concepts of feminism, etc.

I agree with you generally, but my point was more - feminism in general is just a blanket term. Plus, as fauxkaren pointed out, Katy Perry is certainly not taking issue with the word because she gives a shit about intersectionality.
__yourlovely 2nd-Dec-2012 02:31 am (UTC)
This post kind of reminds me of the time my dad came home one day and started to talk to me about the differences between feminism and womanism.
manaconda 2nd-Dec-2012 02:32 am (UTC)
lol tho she is such a joke in every imaginable way. not bc of this, but everything else.

scheisse 2nd-Dec-2012 02:34 am (UTC)
I hope she apologizes like my fave did.

SMH, but I understand why people have no idea what feminism is. The media portrays feminists as the stereotypical man-hating feminazi, so if you're not that "in touch" with the meaning behind the ignorance, you remain ignorant.
doleo 2nd-Dec-2012 03:24 am (UTC)
what did gaga say about feminism? :/
crystalzelda 2nd-Dec-2012 05:06 am (UTC)
She said she wasn't one bc "she liked men too much"

However, she's come out since then and said that she had been ignorant of what feminism was when she made that statement and now identifies as a feminist and has included those sentiments in her music.
hannahgrace456 3rd-Dec-2012 11:48 pm (UTC)
IA. A lot of people don't want to called feminists (myself included tbh) because it's so strongly associated with bashing men in an effort to make women look good.
phillymademe 2nd-Dec-2012 02:34 am (UTC)
love her, but my goodness she says the stupidest things sometimes.
