Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" tops Spotify's list of most-played bland songs in 2012

Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” has nabbed the dubious honor of being Spotify’s most popular track of 2012, a year in which the world fell in love with bland, vaguely electro ballads. It narrowly beat out Carly Rae Jepsen’s summer juggernaut “Call Me Maybe,” which came in second. Also making the list of the world’s mildest and broadly palatable singles are fun.’s “We Are Young,” Train’s “Drive By,” and not one but two songs from Flo Rida, who made the chart with “Whistle” and “Wild Ones.”

The most frequently streamed group in 2012 was Coldplay, while David Guetta and Rihanna nabbed most-streamed male and female, respectively.

best song mentioned in this post lbr

"whistle" being so popular is physically painful for me. that euphemism always leads to bad music. see also:

That song is such a brain-douche

oooommmgg I have this song only bc of ddr. Only, it's the lite version, lol.
soavantgarde 1st-Dec-2012 07:57 pm (UTC)
lmao that's the only reason I know this song too

wasn't it a really hard song to do on heavy or something?
hellotreetops 2nd-Dec-2012 04:44 am (UTC)

i have a coworker who played the same train song over and over on repeat several times a week, i feel guilty for being relieved now that she's on medical leave for a hysterectomy

Train is the worst.

mte (but I still love some of their early work)
hoot 1st-Dec-2012 04:09 pm (UTC)
I went to a NYC Wine and Food festival event this year where Train was playing. We went for the food, but there were a bunch of Train fans there and they were all women 40+ wearing tube tops and mini skirts.
_underwhelmed 1st-Dec-2012 04:15 pm (UTC)
i couldnt listen to it over and over but train and the singles they put out are always my guilty pleasure songs. i kind of hate myself for it but if i'm driving alone i will put on an adult contemporary radio station and sing along ngl. but i did not like 'drive by' as much as the song about the crappy purple scion

call me maybe isn't even a fun song that gets annoying. it's just straight up annoying. reminds of that fucking uh-oh song from forever ago.

verstand 1st-Dec-2012 04:00 pm (UTC)
I used to like this song until it got overplayed, AS USUAL. I left the country for two months, came back, and the radio stations are still playing this like mad. ENOUGH.
die2nitelive4ev 1st-Dec-2012 04:01 pm (UTC)
Still love that song NGL. I think it's the attachment I hold to it
starrhi6 1st-Dec-2012 04:50 pm (UTC)
Same here. It got annoying but it also came out as I broke up with someone and now it brings up the feels.
redglare 1st-Dec-2012 04:02 pm (UTC)
i actually think that fun.'s stuff would be considered good if it wasn't all over the radio, tbh. like if we are young hadn't blown up the way it did they'd probably be ~indie darlings~

i mean that's basically how their last album and the music they put out as the format received, iirc, so...??
redglare 1st-Dec-2012 04:04 pm (UTC)
also i hate somebody that i used to know for the sole reason of Nice Guy douchebags thinking that OMG THEY SO GET IT ~BUT U DIDNT HAVE TO CUT ME OFF~ when the male "character" in the song is obviously supposed to be kind of a dick or at least going about their relationship the wrong way from the lyrics
vanishingbee 1st-Dec-2012 04:10 pm (UTC)
people are way too often willing to write the girl off as the bitch/the guy as the nice one IMO. It's like how people thought 500 Days of Summer was depicting Summer as a bitch rather than 100% honest and consistent in their relationship.
klmnumbers 1st-Dec-2012 04:18 pm (UTC)
yeah. That's one reason why I like it. Kimbra's verse is there to point out how blind he is about the whole thing.
vanishingbee 1st-Dec-2012 04:08 pm (UTC)

I'm not saying they're right, but this is pretty standard in terms of how I've heard hipsters talk about the new album.
fionaapple 1st-Dec-2012 04:09 pm (UTC)
Oh wow I didn't realize fun. was The Format. That makes sense.
wits 1st-Dec-2012 04:14 pm (UTC)
yeah, i really really love the format, i'm surprised by how much fun.'s music caught on, i agree with you
lesbilletsdoux 1st-Dec-2012 04:31 pm (UTC)
fun is the format?!?!!?
holdmedownxx 1st-Dec-2012 04:47 pm (UTC)
i agree. i love fun. (and the first album was sooo much better) but the format > fun.
aujourlejour 1st-Dec-2012 05:10 pm (UTC)
some nights is my jam and i refuse to be ashamed
dubiously 1st-Dec-2012 06:19 pm (UTC)
Fun is terrible ngl. Idek what is wrong with people. Their first song has zero harmony between the chorus and the verses. And the second is a pathetic mashup of Carry On My Wayward Son and Cecelia. The world did not need that. Also I hate babytalk singers, that trend needs to die in hell.
jamaicanmelaugh 1st-Dec-2012 06:22 pm (UTC)
nate ruess and co. WERE ~indie darlings~ with the format (dog problems)and the first fun. album. then they completely changed their sound and blew up. i definitely prefer the sound of dog problems and the first fun. record.
judgmental 1st-Dec-2012 07:05 pm (UTC)
it's the same that happened with Foster The People imo
soavantgarde 1st-Dec-2012 08:02 pm (UTC)
you're probably right, although I'm personally not a huge fan. every time the lead singer starts his christina aguilera impression with the autotune I want to slam my face into my steering wheel, it's awful

is fun. the exact same group of people as the format?

i love that song, idgaf

kimbra's verse is amaaaazing
jasonbeast 1st-Dec-2012 04:08 pm (UTC)
Agreed. The sound would be bland without her verse, it really makes the whole track.
just_some_broad 1st-Dec-2012 04:13 pm (UTC)

I love the macros based on this song tbh. That alone makes its popularity worth it. Plus I don't listen to the radio so things don't get overplayed for me.

a year in which the world fell in love with bland, vaguely electro ballads.

I am really not here for all the Gotye shade on ONTD lately. It's a good song. It was overplayed into infinity, but it was a good song and a clever video. He is ridiculously talented. He plays almost all of the instruments on his albums and mixes them himself. He samples heavily and is creative as a fuck.

Plus, he is adorbs/charming

I'm entering into a STAN RAGE.

Yeah, I think the thing people fail to realize is that ANY song played excessively becomes annoying.

ia he's really talented

It seems like you can't have too much of a good thing, because every time a relatively small act becomes popular people start to hate it. See: Kings of Leon.
troy_macclure 1st-Dec-2012 05:09 pm (UTC)
MTE

That song could have been some obnoxious nice guy anthem and then it's told form Kimbra pov and it's just a really well crafted song.

idk about the Lumineers tho

I'LL JOIN YOU IN STANNING

i went to his concert in london a couple weeks back and at one point nobody would shut up for the quiet songs so he said OK WHO IS HERE JUST FOR THAT ONE SONG ON THE RADIO? and loads of people cheered and then he said WHO JUST WANTS TO HEAR THAT SONG AND GO HOME? and people cheered so they played that song and made all the sopranos~ in the audience sing the kimbra part by putting the mic on us. :p

also i hung around outside in the cold for an hour or so cause i wanted to meet him and then his managed invited us back up for the last few minutes or so of the 'afterparty' so we could meet him! gosh he's so lovely and nice irl and skinny as fuck. sIGH <3
