CW Starts Casting for Wonder Woman

wonder-woman

The CW’s Wonder Woman prequel project is taking another step toward becoming a possible series.

Studio Warner Bros. has hired a casting director for the project and is preparing to send out a casting notice for the starring role. As previously announced, the project is titled Amazon and it “looks at the teenage years of the heroine who will become Wonder Woman.”

Normally casting doesn’t happen until after a project has received at least a pilot order — and Amazon, to be clear, does not. But a project like this so hinges on the lead role, perhaps the network and studio want to see some potential actors before deciding whether to pull the trigger (or they’re so confident it will receive a pilot order, they want to get a jump start on the casting process vs. competing pilot season projects).

Given the success of Arrow this fall, The CW must be tempted to add another DC Comics character to the lineup as a potential companion series. Just remember, however, we’ve been down this road before. Previously, NBC developed a Wonder Woman series last year starring Adrianne Palicki, but despite some photos that made us TV bloggers very happy, the project never made it past the pilot stage.

UPDATE: Looks like Deadline obtained the official casting breakdown, which has more details. The character’s name is Iris (5’8″ or above) and she comes from a secluded country where she was raised as a solider in a brutal environment. Now a stranger in a strange modern big city, she’s “a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe.”

oh awesome so another 10 years of someone NOT being the actual superhero
jaimelannister 30th-Nov-2012 12:08 pm (UTC)
I never watched Smallville, but 10 years is a long-ass time.
vzylexy 30th-Nov-2012 02:25 pm (UTC)
Smallville was so good in its first four years, then it just turned to shit, with Season 10 being the absolute worst.
cricketgrl 30th-Nov-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
Season 5 was probably the worst. It was so boring and it dragged for me. Season 4 was good but that whole "Stones" storyline was embarrassing and silly. Season 8 is probably my favourite of all the seasons but Doomsday outfit was so horrid but I expected that from SV.

Please stop.
exlenne 30th-Nov-2012 12:11 pm (UTC)
Stop trying to make Wonder Woman happen. She doesn't even deserve to be the lead female of DC. She's done nothing interesting for 40 years, she's boring and her rogue's gallery is dull and everything about her is yawn.

Give another comic girl a chance. Hell, give a bunch of them a chance.

Let WW die a noble death instead of taking an already C- character and rebooting into a D- character and then an E- character and so on and so forth.
angeriex 30th-Nov-2012 12:18 pm (UTC)
Eh, I love Diana and I think she definitely DESERVES to be DC's leading lady but I agree with you on giving another heroine a chance. Like as much as I love her I will also admit that her story is very difficult to translate and be made into a MOVIE let alone a television show on the stupid CW. HONESTLY, if what they want is a TV show based on a comic book heroine, they should totally give Helena Bertinelli/Huntress a chance. ORRRR get the right for Morning Glories and work on that shit. Those two could be really good, imo.
goingvogue 30th-Nov-2012 12:38 pm (UTC)
fuck that if thor managed to become a movie franchise then wonder woman can translate to the screen too
sunktheglow 30th-Nov-2012 03:26 pm (UTC)
Huntress is on Arrow, so she probably won't have her own origins show. Not to mention, Birds of Prey did so horribly (even though I loved it and I have it on DVD, idgaf). But definitely not Wonder Woman. Didn't they try this already?
prophecypro 30th-Nov-2012 03:42 pm (UTC)
Morning Glories would probably be tamed a bit for a CW adaptation. Always saw it as a movie
draion 30th-Nov-2012 12:29 pm (UTC)
LOL.

your mother should have taken plan b
moodring54 30th-Nov-2012 01:13 pm (UTC)
While the rest of your comment is woefully misguided, but I agree more female comic characters should get the spotlight. I know I would some terrible things for a good Daughters of the Dragon movie or tv show.
natvach 30th-Nov-2012 03:06 pm (UTC)
I would die a million deaths to see a TV show chronicling how Selina Kyle became Catwoman. Her backstory is both really tragic and super badass.

I feel like a lot of people try to make Wonder Woman be the epitome of feminism. Like the uproar over the recent changes made to the WW myths were ridiculous.
angeriex 30th-Nov-2012 12:13 pm (UTC)
....what....
mynamehere07 30th-Nov-2012 12:13 pm (UTC)
“a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe.”

This bothers me.
hobnailedboots 30th-Nov-2012 12:59 pm (UTC)
mte

sounds like they're setting it up for her badassery to be constantly undermined by "omg a cute guy!"
mynamehere07 30th-Nov-2012 01:21 pm (UTC)
Yup. Because it's the CW I expect her to fall in love with the big bad enemy. Then be conflicted about her love feelings and saving the world.
x_girl_wonder_x 30th-Nov-2012 01:46 pm (UTC)
Me too. It's like they are trying to make Diana, wait, I mean "Iris" into some swoony, easily lovestruck girl.

thisampersand 30th-Nov-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
I am hoping they mean innocent heart as in idealistic about thr world... but rereading it the phrasing isn't really saying that at all is it? sigh
yah_bish_yah 30th-Nov-2012 12:15 pm (UTC)
This is going to be a mess.
jackpeyton 30th-Nov-2012 12:23 pm (UTC)
who wants to bet they cast a pasty, thin, short white chick?
suzycat 30th-Nov-2012 12:40 pm (UTC)
I see your pasty thin short white chick and raise you Kristen Kreuk.

Well, unless that Beauty and the Beast thing has taken off.

That would be hilarious.
prophecypro 30th-Nov-2012 03:15 pm (UTC)
Oh enough with the bashing of her already
expromqueen 30th-Nov-2012 04:05 pm (UTC)
beauty and the beast was already renewed for s2 so it can't be her
tokyo_roadkill 30th-Nov-2012 01:13 pm (UTC)
It says 5'8 there.
cricketgrl 30th-Nov-2012 02:57 pm (UTC)
yup, another frail that looks like she would break in half if the wind is above 10mph.
rogue 1st-Dec-2012 12:02 am (UTC)
reason #1 i don't like this show, this casting or this network
floetcist 1st-Dec-2012 03:42 pm (UTC)
Wonder Woman is white, so why would casting a white chick be a problem?

The casting news states 5'8 or taller, so I don't think they'll be any short actresses.
angeriex 30th-Nov-2012 12:25 pm (UTC)
"she comes from a secluded country where she was raised as a solider in a brutal environment. Now a stranger in a strange modern big city, she’s “a fierce warrior with the innocent heart of a romantic and she will fight to the death to make the world safe.”

ngl this sounds more like Cassandra Cain than Diana. I mean take away the romantic part and replace it with kind and you SORT of have Cass there.
waffled_flambe 30th-Nov-2012 02:07 pm (UTC)
I would kill for a live-action TV show/movie/anything starring my bb Cass
gabzillaz 30th-Nov-2012 02:21 pm (UTC)
I second this
latenightcuppa 30th-Nov-2012 03:03 pm (UTC)
live action team batgirl pls and thank you

I MEAN IF WE CAN'T HAVE THEM IN THE COMICS.
firecracker_sj 30th-Nov-2012 12:29 pm (UTC)
Well this sounds like it'll be a train wreck.
jasonbeast 30th-Nov-2012 12:29 pm (UTC)
Alexandra Daddario looks the part and is near the right age, but nobody should ever let her near dialogue.

murdered_beauty 30th-Nov-2012 12:49 pm (UTC)
It's the CW so...she'll be good.
jasonbeast 30th-Nov-2012 01:02 pm (UTC)
LOL

Excellent point.
acalith 30th-Nov-2012 12:29 pm (UTC)
No. If the CW is involved, Diana will find herself in yet another stupid, boring love triangle sooner or later. Also the 'romantic heart' makes me cringe.
draion 30th-Nov-2012 12:30 pm (UTC)
Might as well watch it for the lulz, since it's presumably all it'll be good for.
infinitycluster 30th-Nov-2012 12:52 pm (UTC)
ugh so the found a way to make her younger. typical bullshit.
benihime99 30th-Nov-2012 01:02 pm (UTC)
I think it's time to stop
