Here’s What Makes a Final Fantasy, According to Square Enix


This last weekend in Tokyo, Square Enix held an open conference centered around its real-time tech demo, Agni's Philosophy: Final Fantasy. While presenting the technical aspects was paramount in the design of Agni's Philosophy (as it was meant to showcase the detail and flexibility of Square's new Luminous Engine), its creators were adamant it feel like a Final Fantasy. But what exactly makes a Final Fantasy a "Final Fantasy"? To answer this question they put together a list of the five minimum components for a Final Fantasy.

I still remember my brother making my mom and I watch this intro when I was a kid.

He was all, "OMG, the graphics are amazing, it looks so REAL!"

I remember being completely astounded at this. And then FFX came out and I was like, "OH MY GOD THIS IS AMAZING."
Now good graphics are just par for the course.

I hope they're really fixing up 14 for the relaunch. My bf and I tried for awhile while it was free and he loved/had played ffxi for years but ugh. I miss having a worthwhile mmo :(

Sorry, I have loved each and every Final Fantasy game except IX. I couldn't get into it, I really really tried and I was so fucking excited for it too. I've even played the MMOs but I couldn't get into them.

I've always had the same experience with each game; I become really invested in the characters and by the end, I'm sad that this is the last that I'll see of them. I'm actually happy they've started doing sequels. I cried like a baby at the end of X. I replayed VIII over and over just to watch the ending and cry along.

I still think Square is putting out amazing games and it's so hard to find good RPGs these days. I am an RPG nut and when really wonderful games are shit on (*cough*Mass Effect 3*cough* I'm looking at you EA/BioWare), it reminds me of how few and far between GOOD RPGs are. It's just not as popular a genre as it once was.

I fucking LOVEDDDDD FFXIII & XIII-2, and I cannot fucking wait for XIII-3/Lightning Returns. I don't get it when people complain about Square Enix, I've never DISLIKED anything they've done, but they've had some games that were not as good as the rest.

WHAAAAAAAAT. i love 9. i am the complete opposite - a real stan for it. imo it's a real throwback to the older games and while it DOES have shitty characters like quina and a fucking TERRIBLE / random final boss, i love the rest of it!! one of the prettiest games they've done, both visually and musically.

VIII's ending tho. omg. gets me every time :'(

I only ever played FF7 and FF8, then on my boyfriend's PS3 I tried the demo for the newest one and I just thought ''lolwut'', that shit looked unplayable.

FF7 is forever flawless (yes I'm gonna be THAT person.)

But seriously, I think I have a hard time trusting the opinion of the guy who gave Hironobu Sakaguchi all their money to make The Spirits Within, which lead to them needing to merge with Enix to keep from going bankrupt iirc. He talks about Square Enix having no "vision" but SE has actually started changing stuff up pretty significantly by buying Eidos and taking over their franchises (Tomb Raider, Hitman). And they're really starting to make a name or themselves as PC publishers; both Sleeping Dogs and the recently released Hitman: Absolution have their best versions on the PC.

I do think Final Fantasy has gone down the tubes, though.

I'm playing ffXIII-2 atm and I'd forgotten how stilted final fantasy dialogue is my god. Also I hate that I can only control one character one of the best things about ff was that you had a big cast of characters to play as.

Oblig signal boost for the THQ Humble Bundle, Metro 2033/Darksiders/Company of Heroes for however much you wanna pay and you get Saints Row 3 if you pay over the average. Which is damn good considering the average is like $6 atm.
