Yahoo CEO does not consider Blackberries as smartphones

Yahoo recently offered to give all their employees free smartphones, with a choice between iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S3’s and Nokia Lumia 920s.

Now Marissa Mayer, Yahoo’s new CEO, has explained why, noting the company had an imperative to move their employees from Blackberries to “smartphones”, suggesting rather strongly and repeatedly that she did not consider those devices to be real smartphones.

During an interview with Fortune’s Patricia Sellers, she explained:

"We literally are moving the company from BlackBerrys to smartphones. One of the really important things for Yahoo’s strategy moving forward is mobile."

Presumably she is not alone, explaining why RIM’s market share in US dropped to only 1.6%.

shoutout to my good sis who is still using her 2 years old bb pearl imsoclassyomg <3 hope your 5 years old contract ends soon

oh yay well-timed phone post! to all the verizon/sprint users, how are you liking their service?
treradical 29th-Nov-2012 04:29 am (UTC)
i have sprint and it kinda sucks but it was the cheapest so i went with them. i also get a discount for being a retail employee lol.
cutesiness 29th-Nov-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
aww damn, tbh im only interested in them coz i like the phones theyre offering. i want a smartphone with a qwerty keyboard.
holdmedownxx 29th-Nov-2012 04:33 am (UTC)
I love verizon! I'm in LA if that helps you at all.
wristtattoos 29th-Nov-2012 04:34 am (UTC)

but verizon's coverage is way better in my ~area
cickiz 29th-Nov-2012 04:39 am (UTC)
they're all basically the same thing except for wireless coverage. Verizon is generally the best for that but it depends on your area.
carazon 29th-Nov-2012 05:12 am (UTC)
Verizon has good coverage but they're such a fucking ripoff.
banabee 29th-Nov-2012 05:25 am (UTC)
I've had Verizon for years now. The coverage is great but they're greedy as fuck
nannerpuss 29th-Nov-2012 07:42 am (UTC)
I have Verizon and the coverage isn't as great as they say. I have coverage everywhere, but It's usually about 2 or 3 bars (and I live in a major city's suburb). If I wasn't grandfathered into unlimited data I might change.
k_byte 29th-Nov-2012 03:21 pm (UTC)
it's good coverage and fast (east coast major city here) but FUCKING EXPENSIVE AS HELL i want to die every month i get my phone bill. we had t-mobile before this and it was a really good price but the service was ass.
gjee 29th-Nov-2012 04:09 pm (UTC)
i've had verizon since 2006. It does seem like it has the best coverage and the data is definitely the fastest. My data speeds are faster than some people's wi-fi, which is pretty cool but Verizon does seem the most expensive. I have an individual plan and if I were on Tmobile, I would get an unlimited text plan for the same thing I'm paying right now =\ But a lot of my friends have t-mobile and they don't get a lot of service in places (even busy places like downtown LA) while I usually get full bars.

SO its expensive but you get more.
crazyyogurt 29th-Nov-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
I hated my Curve 8330 with a passion. But I recently switched back from an Android phone to my 8530 and I LOVE it...I love my Blackberry.
blrocks 29th-Nov-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
I have an iphone but I think it's kind of disturbing that mobile phones have become a new "thing" for people to appraise each other by.

OT: I bought new camera earlier this year, but now I have 3 puppies and the camera isn't really fast enough to get good pictures of them. I've spent so much money this year but IDK I want a better camera because my bbs are growing up so fast and this time will never come back.

late but I would try Slickdeals.net. people post amazing deals on that website and lots of people ask questions in the threads about whether or not its a good buy for them, etc. shutter speed is pretty important so I'm sure they can recommend something for you :)
blrocks 30th-Nov-2012 02:59 am (UTC)
Thanks! I'll check it out.
cickiz 29th-Nov-2012 04:33 am (UTC)
ngl I'm always surprised when I see a person on a blackberry but omg at people acting like BBs are shameful. It's a fucking phone get over yourselves.

joaniemaloney 29th-Nov-2012 05:40 am (UTC)
haha it's prob bc I'm in Canada so it's not as rare to see people with BBs. I guess it must be more ~shameful for those of you in the US to be seen with them. :/
cutesiness 29th-Nov-2012 04:34 am (UTC)
i had a samsung galaxy y but my fiance recently gave me his iphone 4 since switching to s3. i love it so much. <3
cickiz 29th-Nov-2012 04:35 am (UTC)
anyway, the problem with BB is that they never bothered to improve on their technology. They always relied on their name to get customers. I mean, they STILL charge $300 for a BB phone on some plans.
mountainsea 29th-Nov-2012 04:46 am (UTC)
they rely on the name and that goddamn bbm service. i know some of my friends who cant let go of their blackberries because they're getting dependant on bbm
cickiz 29th-Nov-2012 04:49 am (UTC)
really? they have enough friends to use BBM? I solely used BBM just to use up some data considering there are no apps on BBM to really play with haha.
larrylurker 29th-Nov-2012 04:36 am (UTC)
Damn Blackberry. In high school you were the phone, homie. what the fuck happen to you?
cickiz 29th-Nov-2012 04:40 am (UTC)
just like the high school jock they thought their coolness would last them through life.

joaniemaloney 29th-Nov-2012 05:41 am (UTC)

burn_a_miracle 29th-Nov-2012 04:38 am (UTC)

starswept 29th-Nov-2012 04:43 am (UTC)
Any Canadians here who use Wind? I'm planning on switching companies in the New Year and would love to not be locked into a contract, but I've heard mixed things on Wind. I live in the GTA if that helps.

Edited at 2012-11-29 04:44 am (UTC)
owtfx 29th-Nov-2012 04:58 am (UTC)
what mixed reviews have you heard about wind?

all i hear is positive.
starswept 29th-Nov-2012 05:10 am (UTC)
Basically what the comment below yours says: shaky service. I've heard that outside of Toronto proper, the service is shit, and that even within Toronto, you'll often be unable to make calls in certain buildings, in shadows of buildings, etc. And service doesn't exist past Oshawa. And this is important to me since I live in a suburb of TO, and also I don't like the idea of suddenly not being able to make or receive calls in certain areas. Also one person I spoke to said their customer service was very rude.
krisgonn 29th-Nov-2012 05:02 am (UTC)
Wind works in cities. But where I live it would get absolutely NO service. If you leave the city the service is basically non existent lol.
thrillho 29th-Nov-2012 11:38 am (UTC)
I would use Kodoo - I have a Galaxy 2 through them and their customer service is amazing for a phone company. They have iPhones too, but either you buy it outright for no contract or at a reduced rate w/ contract, so imo it's not worth it.
chewmi 29th-Nov-2012 04:51 am (UTC)
i have a tmobile flip phone and finally changing to iphone lol

I remember when my sister got this for her high school graduation, it was one of the first camera phones. My 10 year old self was so jealous.

cutesiness 29th-Nov-2012 05:05 am (UTC)

sandstorm 29th-Nov-2012 03:11 pm (UTC)
