Yahoo CEO does not consider Blackberries as smartphones


Yahoo recently offered to give all their employees free smartphones, with a choice between iPhones, Samsung Galaxy S3’s and Nokia Lumia 920s.

Now Marissa Mayer, Yahoo’s new CEO, has explained why, noting the company had an imperative to move their employees from Blackberries to “smartphones”, suggesting rather strongly and repeatedly that she did not consider those devices to be real smartphones.

During an interview with Fortune’s Patricia Sellers, she explained:

"We literally are moving the company from BlackBerrys to smartphones. One of the really important things for Yahoo’s strategy moving forward is mobile."

Presumably she is not alone, explaining why RIM’s market share in US dropped to only 1.6%.

I have a BB and I no longer consider it a smartphone. Its gotten to the point I can only text and call on it. And this was after I had the stupid thing checked out.

I have to keep telling myself 15 more months or first paycheck to get a new, non BB phone. *really wants a Galaxy 3*

hopefully a galaxy 4 will be out when you're done with your contract. also idk what company you use, but sometimes if you've been with them a long time and are desperate to switch phones and super nice, they can maybe upgrade you a few months early (maybe like 11-12 month wait instead?)

I'm with Telus and I tried. They still want me to payout 150 bucks plus whatever the phone costs if its not a zero dollar deal.

I have a BB and the only reason I still do is because I was grandfathered in on Verizon's unlimited plan so I don't want to renew my contract since I'll lost out on the unlimited data. I talked to the Verizon guy and he said that I can add a line for $10 more a month to get the iPhone and then switch it over to my phone number. I'm still debating if this is worth it since iPhone 4S are selling for $250-$300 on Craigslist.

I have a BB and I just cancelled my contract and ordered a Galaxy S 3 with a diff company. I can't wait for it to get here. I'm so excited.

Same here. I recently moved to NZ and its so expensive to get a data plan on blackberries and no one does pay as you go data on BB either. I loved it when I was in Canada but it's pretty much just a regular phone now with no data capability.

aw, I have a BB and I'm aware that it's falling really behind. hard to believe - seems like yesterday that we would always be talking about BB in business class, but that was way back in high school.

holy shit I didn't realize it was that low for the US. maybe it's bc they've always shown worldwide figures or something.

haha that is the opposite of my parents - they still use the same old phone from almost 10 years ago.

tbh I'm already behind on all the trends. I've never owned an iPhone, the BB I have rn is the only smartphone I've ever had, so idk apps or much of anything re: phones. I don't play video games either or own a TV of my own - any technology I'm faced with is just internet and I watch my shows online. :/

my first sidekick (sidekick color) had a camera attachment. Like I literally had to grab this mini camera with a headphone jack sticking out of it and plug it into the side of my sidekick to take a picture.

Word. Mine broke, so I finally got the latest iPhone, and I wanna kill it with fire. I'm ditching it and trying the latest Samsung next week, but I think I will hate that too. Those touchscreens, with all their fancy apps etc, are just not built for firing off a hundred emails a day.

I don't miss my BB because the last two I got failed me by refusing to open any apps I needed. However, I HATE that I had to switch to iPhone because the touchscreen is so annoying when sending lots of messages/e-mails back to back.
