New Star Wars Movies May Follow Marvel Blueprint

Kasdan & Kinberg's projects could be spinoffs rather than Episodes 8 and 9.

So it turns out that newly revealed Star Wars writer-producers Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg may not be writing Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX after all.

The Hollywood Reporter says "that while Kasdan and Kinberg have indeed been hired to work on the Star Wars franchise, they will be writing separate projects (hence the reason why they also would receive producer credits), not necessarily Episode VIII and Episode IX."

It gets better. Lucasfilm is apparently following the Marvel Studios blueprint of laying out an extended, shared universe on the big screen. THR explains:

"Their scripts could turn into official 'Episodes' in the main Skywalker storyline, or they could form the basis for spinoffs focusing on side characters. Disney CEO Robert Iger said the goal is to release a Star Wars movie 'every two to three years,' and some could easily focus on other pieces of the expansive mythos (similar to Marvel’s Avengers universe). Disney and Lucasfilm declined comment."

I honestly can't decide whether this means SW will become even more of a cash cow than it is now or if it'll bring some fresh blood to a stale franchise. Thoughts?

Hmmmm

Here for a Boba Fett movie.

Honestly, I'm way happier with them adding extra episodes/spinoffs instead of rebooting the original trilogy. Some people hold up the series far too high imo. the plot was full of holes, the effects weren't that good, the script/acting wasn't exactly oscar worthy.

more female jedi plz.
donnanoble 28th-Nov-2012 05:24 pm (UTC)
I don't think they were ever planning on rebooting the original trilogy.
watchsnowfall 28th-Nov-2012 05:30 pm (UTC)
i know, I just think it's silly people are worried about the sequels not being ~up to scratch when it's not like the bar is set that high
forcestrong 28th-Nov-2012 05:31 pm (UTC)
I've seen people toss out that theory before, even when the PT was being filmed. They argued that GL was so greedy, and the special editions proved he didn't mind "ruining" the OT already, so it seemed, like, ~totally predictable that his next project would be remakes/reboots.
ginger_maya 28th-Nov-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
They initially said the new movies would be sequels rather than reboot.
watchsnowfall 28th-Nov-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
i know, i'm just saying i'm happier they're going this direction when it could've been much worse
skeet_skeet 28th-Nov-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
Truth, and I agree with everything. And yes more female everything, Jedi, Space Pirates, Imperial Officers, Rebel Pilots. Just more female heroes/villains in the SW universe.

Yes sfm to your last sentence.

I saw Harrison Ford the other night :D
forcestrong 28th-Nov-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
I'd prefer they leave the Skywalkers out of it. I'd like to see a totally different era, like when the KOTOR games picked a random timeframe no one had considered before. It lets them play with aesthetics and they don't risk screwing up existing characters (or dipping into the EU).
lynn_heart 28th-Nov-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
Do you know how many people I would blow for them to make a movie out of KOTOR2? I need more Kreia in my life. She was free of all flaws.
forcestrong 28th-Nov-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
I go back and forth about getting behind KOTOR movies. I was obscenely excited for SW:TOR, but it was a disastuh. So on the one hand, I realize it wouldn't be the same people making the movie as the people who made a crappy game, so it could end up amazeballs. But on the other, I don't think I could take the disappointment if I get excited again and it ends up crap again.
lynn_heart 28th-Nov-2012 06:12 pm (UTC)
TOR is probably one of the biggest disappointments of my young life, ngl. I was not here for a WoW-clone. I wanted more deep, intellectual, mythos-based stories that actually touched upon what the Force is and how it can change and shape a person whether they're force-sensitive or not.

If they ever made a movie they'd have to get Chris Avellone back to write for it.
miakun 28th-Nov-2012 06:18 pm (UTC)
I know there's like what six thousand years between KOTOR/SWTOR and the movies? RANDOMLY JUMP IN SOMEWHERE AND MAKE SHIT UP.
professor_chaos 28th-Nov-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
i wouldn't say the franchise is stale. the movies, books and misc SW universe still has a pretty huge active fan base and garners a whole shitload of cash in merchandise alone. more movies will just be adding to that (regardless of whether their decent or not as the prequels have made clear)
ginger_maya 28th-Nov-2012 05:30 pm (UTC)
It is stale in terms of ideas, tbh.
professor_chaos 28th-Nov-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
well if it ain't broken it don't need to be fixed. GL has pretty specific ideas on what he wanted to do with SW. i don't know of many other franchises that have remained in the forefront of pop culture for 40+ years. If you have such great ideas why don't you write the next movie?
ginger_maya 28th-Nov-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
Yes, that's why other franchises that have existed for decades get rebooted - because they've grown stale. This isn't a reboot, obviously, but they're still doing something different.
endingonfire 28th-Nov-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
Idk whenever I heard about Episodes 7,8 or 9, I can't help thinking of Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3. Some originals are so great they should just be left alone.
thrace_ 28th-Nov-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
If I trusted them to handle her right, I'd say I want a Mara Jade movie. But they'd fuck that up all to hell.
hazel_belle 28th-Nov-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
If the go the spin off route, I will be happy. There is so much to choose from; also I want to see the Siths and jedi's go at it during the Old Republic era.
adigallia 28th-Nov-2012 05:54 pm (UTC)
I trust Lawrence Kasdan since he wrote Empire. Do whatever you like, my friend!

I love the idea of spin-offs in the Star Wars galaxy. There is SO MUCH they could do with that. KotoR, between Eps III and IV, hundreds of years after Jedi. Sith, Jedi, bounty hunters, pilots, smugglers, etc, etc. There are so many options out there. I always liked the idea of the live-action show that may never happen now - the Underworld set between III and IV.

I would like a proper sequel trilogy too, Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, and based on this article that seems like it would follow the "main Skywalker storyline." But I would love to see what else they come up with too.
girlscharms 28th-Nov-2012 05:57 pm (UTC)
Dont care what they do as long it involves my bb R2-D2
miakun 28th-Nov-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
YES. I am really excited, because god damn this is such an awesome sandbox with so many possibilities, but they keep playing in the SAME CORNER (sans the Old Republic, tbh).
wordsgate 28th-Nov-2012 06:32 pm (UTC)
psubookworm27 28th-Nov-2012 06:41 pm (UTC)
I'll take half-assed Star Wars related movies than shitty Transformer, Battleship, GI Joe, etc movies, tbh.
hammersxstrings 28th-Nov-2012 07:03 pm (UTC)
the marvel blueprint is amazing, so I think this could only do good things

i'm growing steadily more optimistic about this move.
spiffynamehere 28th-Nov-2012 07:19 pm (UTC)
tbh I just really want Wraith Squadron involved somehow.
shadowpiranha 28th-Nov-2012 08:46 pm (UTC)
Oh good, yes, can I have a Jar Jar Binks movie?
executed_blonde 29th-Nov-2012 12:59 am (UTC)
Yesssss

I have been waiting for a Start Wars post for this:
