Les Mis Round-Up: Rave Review, French Movie Poster & New Stills


Driving home from the Santa Monica advance screening of Universal's Les Misérables on Saturday for Academy members, I spotted a huge poster for the movie on a building in Westwood which proclaims it is "A musical phenomenon about fight, dream, hope and love." I turned to my companion and said that this is a rare occasion when those words more than match the deed.

Indeed, this movie is the most thrilling film I have seen in many, many years, perhaps ever.

I'm so freaking annoyed we have to wait. Especially because my mum wants to go see it and if it leaks I'll watch it online and then I'll have to be an emotional mess twice.

Of course it would be perfect, the musical is so amazing! I want Anne to win SO MUCH loved her since Princess Diaries.

TBH, I was okay with Anne, I just never really paid her that much attention. She was cute in Princess Diaries, and hilarious to me as Mary Poppins on SNL.

She's certainly won me over. I've never had a trailer make me bawl before. :S

I like Anne partly in reaction to ONTD weird hate-on for her. Like idk. She seems pretty harmless to me. She seems sweet.

And she's a decent actress when given good material. She was great in Rachel Getting Married and I thought she was the best thing about TDKR.

So yeah, I don't get why people hate her so I kind of stan for her in response.

I really don't get the hatred for Anne either. AFAIK she's never said anything offensive, she's pretty, and she always does a good job when she's given reasonably decent material to work with. I don't think Meryl Streep could have made the Ella Enchanted movie any good, lol.

It's cooled down a bit since TDKR but people were vicious before that, man.

I was always meh about her, but I started liking her when I learned she left the Catholic church in support of her gay brother (that's right, I said it, too).

I am beyond ready for this movie, it needs to magically leak to the internet. And if that doesn't happen, I'll take the soundtrack.

Man, not even the positive reviews had good things to say about Russell Crowe's singing? I guess I kinda saw this coming. Ugh. For a role as challenging as Javert to sing, you need to get an actor who can sing and act and not just be all "Well, one out of the two is good enough for me!" It's not like that's some impossible feat. They should have gotten Philip Quast or Roger Allam.

Yeah, I'm a butthurt musical stan. :P

I know that everyone loves Phlip Quast and he is great.

But Earl Carpenter was the first Javert that I saw live and idk. He is ~my Javert~.

Nothing will ever sway my love for those two Javerts, but I know what you mean about a live performance making a huge difference in impression. I saw Robert Hunt as an understudy Javert on the Broadway Les Mis revival, and he has been a lesser-known favourite of mine ever since. His chemistry with John Owen-Jones was insane!

I've only heard Earl Carpenter as the Phantom, but he's hugely talented and I'm sure he was phenomenal as Javert too.

I LOVE Earl Carpenter. The Les Mis 25th Anniversary Tour Cast Recording is my favorite version of the show.
He was fabulous as the Phantom as well.

Roger Allam is such an underrated Javert! Much as I love him and Quast (really, all of the professionally recorded English Javerts, I grew up on the OBC so I have a soft spot for Terrance Mann as well), though, I think they're both a bit too old to play the role opposite Hugh, especially on screen when the aging has to look at least semi-realistic.

Norm Lewis could have done it but sadly I don't think they would have ever cast the film version color-blind. Definitely agree that they should have gone with a stage alum over Crowe, though.

Actual reviews are embargoed until December 7th or something, but journalists and people who were at the screenings are allowed to talk about their general reactions, and I guess to discuss the movie in terms of Awards nominations to get the buzz going, so no one is giving too much away except "so-and-so were great, so-and-so not so much". From what I've read so far, the consensus seems to be that he's good, but everyone else is terrific and amazing, so he sticks out like a sore thumb.

Me too. I guess he was too old for the part. But I really wished it was him. Aaron is great, but Ramin is better.

There was a time before fame got to Ramin's head, he WAS a decent Enjolras. His performance was laughable in the 25th.

It wasn't his best performance but I didn't think it was laughable. What in particular made you feel that way. To be honest, I found the whole 25th anniversary concert underwhelming at best (save Norm Lewis).

My sister is a manager at a movie theater and sometimes they do private late night employee screenings for movies. So I'm trying to talk her into hosting one as a singalong so that I can sing to my heart's content.

Oh god, I hope no one is actually dim-witted enough to sing along in an actual theatre with other people who paid to see the movie.

As a former high school theater kid (and part-time college theater kid), one of my least favorite things about theater kids is that they never seem to know when it is absolutely not appropriate to start a musical sing along. No one wants to hear that shit on the bus, save it for your sleepovers.
