30 Rock Wedding Announcement

This week's 30 Rock will include Liz and Criss's wedding, so to honor the occasion, we helped the happy couple craft a wedding announcement. Will they really go through with the marriage, or might Ms. Lemon and Mr. Chross back out, like so many Kelly Taylors? We shall see! Until then, at least we have our precious, silly speculation.

I really don't get why people nowadays still change their surnames... Combined names are cute, and of course people are free to take each other's surnames, but because it's mostly women, the tradition doesn't sit well with me.

I think a big problem is that children always get the last name of the father and not having any part of your last name in common with your kids is upsetting and sometimes makes things difficult for dumb school administrations and whatnot.

I share my surname with my mom, my dad's is different. I'm pretty sure in a lot of countries you can choose... But if in some place's kids can only get the dad's surname, then that's ridiculous.
I did see a dad with his kid at the airport once, and they didn't have the same surname, and it became a bit complicated when they were going through passport control. So in that sense, families choosing one surname for all makes sense - but because it's almost always the man's, it's not something I approve of.

in the US its pretty uncommon for a baby to not have the fathers name, unless the father isnt in the picture

A survey conducted in 2011 found that 50% of Americans believe that women should be legally required to take their husband's last name upon marriage.

I'm guessing that mentality has something to do with why the vast majority of women in the U.S. do so.

50% of Americans as in all the men? Lol, I kid, but that's horrible. "Legally required"? Well, fuck off whoever thinks that way.

If I got married to a guy who had a more common last name I would definitely change mine. I have had a lifetime of people mispronouncing my last name and it's so annoying. I wish I could have a name like Smith or Jones.

I have a foreign-sounding, unpronounceable surname, but it's not my problem if people can't say it ;).
my_moloko 27th-Nov-2012 06:06 pm (UTC)
But don't you get sick of repeating it over and over and people still fucking it up? I'm just assuming because that's what happens to me.
adigallia 27th-Nov-2012 06:03 pm (UTC)
Yeah, this happened to me and it's been unexpectedly really nice to have a common last name. Not only do people no longer mispronounce/misspell my last name all the time, but it also makes someone Googling you much more difficult.
my_moloko 27th-Nov-2012 06:05 pm (UTC)
Ha, well my first name is also pretty rare so I think people would still be able to find me. I just get annoyed when I clearly say my name and people still screw it up.

My husband's sister did the exact same thing. She couldn't change it fast enough.

She's also always the one in my corner when her father asks me why I didn't change mine from my semi-common name to their forever mispronounced name.

ia with this, but i don't know if it'll ever die as a tradition. my mom never changed her last name, so ppl always just assumed her last name was mine or that she wasn't my mom.

i'm conflicted bc i don't agree with changing names, but i dont have a good relationship with my father so i don't want to keep his name. at the same time, i've had it for so long...who knows
miss_kate18 28th-Nov-2012 11:20 am (UTC)
I see what you mean, but I've always wanted to change mine because I hate my surname and have no real connection to it.
