Nicki Minaj Fires Back at Steven Tyler for ‘American Idol’ Remarks

Nicki Minaj is not one to hold her tongue. The Young Money rapper is firing back at former “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler after he slammed her and the new “Idol” judges.

“If it was Bob Dylan, Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield!” the Aerosmith frontman told MTV News. “Whereas, if it was Bob Dylan with us, we would have brought the best of him out, as we did with ['Idol' contestant] Phillip Phillips.”

Tyler, who was an “Idol” judge alongside Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, further criticized the new judging panel, which includes Nicki, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, and Jackson. “They should have something going on, which is called ‘camaraderie.’ They should have something going on so thick and beautiful that they can lay it over the new talent that’s trying to birth itself. It needs to be birthed, not judged by ‘entertainment’ factors, it needs to be judged by people that [are] honest, true, that have the ‘it’ factor. Not the ‘it’ factor because they can fight,” he said, referring to Nicki’s infamous feud with Mariah.

After getting wind of the comments, Nicki took to Twitter to respond. “Steven Tyler said I would have sent Bob Dylan to a cornfield??? Steven, you haven’t seen me judge one single solitary contestant yet!” she tweeted.

The newest “Idol” judge did not let him get away with his offensive remarks. “You assume that I wouldn’t have liked Bob Dylan??? why? black? rapper? what? go fuck yourself and worry about yourself babe,” she said.

“LOL lets make him a shirt that says ‘No Coloreds Allowed’ then escort him down 2 Barbara Walters so he can tell how he was threatened w/guns,” she added, referring to Mariah’s comments to “The View” host.

“I understand you really wanted to keep your job but take that up with the producers. I haven’t done anything to you. That’s a racist comment.”

Tyler exited the show after two seasons. Nicki will make her judging debut when the 12th season of “American Idol” premieres in January. source

Except it is, cornfield is stand for a place you send someone you don't want to hear. Has nothing to do with race so......

i think what you don't get is she's not mentioning the cornfield as being similar to some kind of slave field (like wut, i'm black and didn't even see that)

what she's saying is he's implying that she as a rapper, black woman, etc wouldn't know who bob dylan is and wouldn't appreciate his music. he's assuming things about rap culture. Do you think he's expect Eminem to know who Bob dylan is?
angelmonster 27th-Nov-2012 02:29 am (UTC)
I thought he meant that they have no hindsight in letting someone through that has potential, they just send them to the cornfield.......?
nouns 27th-Nov-2012 02:32 am (UTC)
I saw it as present tense, that she wouldn't be able to recognize talent if it's not packaged in a specific way. That she wouldn't be able to get the 'basics'
angelmonster 27th-Nov-2012 02:34 am (UTC)
What dos that have to do with her skin color then? Maybe I am missing something entirely....?
nouns 27th-Nov-2012 02:36 am (UTC)
You assume people from one culture and liking one music won't like some other kind. People assume all day that hip hop fans don't like other genres, and black people are always assumed to be hip hop fans only, so yes, it's a racial comment. We can dance around the 'what ifs' and possible blurred lines, but if you say that when people look at black people and don't assume they're 2chainz or kanye fans, you're a fucking lie..you're not assuming that particular group enjoys linkin park and green day.

But using that logic you assume Steve Tyler said that because she is black. Maybe it's just because she is an asshole? He said nothing about race and I don't get where the assumption he meant her race came out of that statement at all. He says if bob Dylan, not the greatest signer, would just be sent off with a nicks and he would see the potential.
nouns 27th-Nov-2012 02:40 am (UTC)
He did make that comment because she's black. Do you think he'd make the same comment to Eminem?
angelmonster 27th-Nov-2012 02:42 am (UTC)
But he is talking about American Idol...idgi, I really don't.
nouns 27th-Nov-2012 02:43 am (UTC)
Obviously i'm saying imagine Eminem in Nicki's shoes as a judge, and do you think Steven would call him out with the Bob Dylan comment? Do you think Steven would assume that Eminem would appreciate should a huge music icon like Bob?

lmao m t e

I don't think that is what he meant at all. he even went on to say that she and the other judges wouldnt see talent ( i'm assuming like bob dylan) because she is all about the entertainment factor not "it" factor. i dont think it was racist at all. i dont think the bob dylan thing had anything to do with her musical genre, but more of her presentation and shock factor which i guess stephen tyler has disdain for.
nouns 27th-Nov-2012 03:24 pm (UTC)
it has everything to do with her genre, he was a judge along with jennifer lopez in his season , so his bias is apparent.
larastone 27th-Nov-2012 04:25 am (UTC)
lol wat, ofc that phrase has nothing to do with race...
