"Sherlock" Season 3 Production Delayed

Expecting the return of Sherlock next summer?

Try late 2013. Perhaps even 2014, depending where you live.

Start of production on the third cycle of the fan-adored detective drama has been moved from January to March. Sources say the shift was necessary to accommodate the busy schedules of the show’s breakout stars, Benedict Cumberbatch (who’s filming Star Trek 2) and Martin Freeman (starring in The Hobbit).

The BBC has not announced a premiere date for season three, but given that January was previously announced as the start of production, fans hoped to see Holmes and Watson return in the summer. Sources say the BBC will air Sherlock series three in late 2013. PBS has to wait until after the BBC’s window. A PBS spokesperson says Sherlock will air either late 2013 — or early 2014.

The first cycle of Sherlock debuted in the UK in July, 2010. The eagerly anticipated second season premiered last January, with PBS debuting the three 90-minute episodes in May. With its second season cliffhanger and increasing critical acclaim and worldwide buzz, anticipation for the next cycle of Sherlock is stronger than ever. From the BBC’s perspective, however, nothing about its schedule has really changed. Though production is starting slightly later than originally hoped, the company has only previously said the show will run sometime next year and recently hinted that a fall debut is likely. But for fans, particularly U.S. fans wanting more Sherlock as soon as possible, well, Holmes would advise patience.

You know, there's an element of that for me too! That feeling that these guys are kind of okay with waiting, that they think they can rest on their laurels and enjoy the acclaim and that people will just come flocking back whenever they ring the bell.

Which may be me just projecting my utter and all-encompassing HATRED for Moffat onto a sorry situation, but yeah. lol I wonder just how hard they pushed and negotiated to have them back. I'm imagining Peter Jackson and Mark Gatiss wrestling on top of a board room table.

Elementary...no shade, but I really need that show to pick it the fuck up with the mysteries, start giving me some overarching plots and pepper in more canon-related stuff. I love the show but it needs more.

yes! I'm hoping this upcoming episode puts in something bigger than the one-hit wonder cases!

They're pretty much right as far as I can see, though, as much as I personally would love for it to flop lol. They figure the casual viewer will happily forget for the next year+ but then catch a trailer on TV and think "oh yeah!" and tune in, and tbh they're probably not wrong.

It is annoying though. I don't curr about BBC Sherlock but if I did I'd be feeling pretty cheated.

I guess that mentality is okay for the casual viewer but for the hardcore fans who rallied behind this and made it what it is, this is a slap in the face for them. Crazy as some of them can be, it isn't fair to them.

Yeah, it sucks for the hardcore fans. It's usually the hardcore fans who get jerked around though because no one really cares about hardcore fans, they care about the casual viewers who make up their audience. (At least when a show is a huge mainstream success instead of a cult hit like Firefly or Community where hardcore fans make up the viewing base.) I find the gaps between Doctor Who seasons lately really irritating and they're not nearly as long as the Sherlock ones.
