Basically, Pop Is Shit Right Now.

Last week, Radio 1′s Head of Music George Ergatoudis noted that guitar music would come back sooner rather than later. He didn’t mean Ed Sheeran-type stuff with acoustic guitars and so on. He meant guitars that plug into things. He was responding to a comment by Kiss FM’s Programme Director Andy Roberts, who’d said that “we’re due guitars [again] but I think they’ll be a fusion of something we [radio stations] will all be able to play.” Ergatoudis was less ambiguous: “Guitar music is definitely on the way back.”

Most people in radio and TV have never made a secret of the fact that they would happily play Foo Fighters, Muse and U2 on a loop if they could get away with it. Most of the music industry and supporting media is populated by the blokiest blokes with the blokiest tastes, who only grudgingly produce or entertain the existence of pop music because they need to tick boxes and make what they perceive to be easy cash. No wonder so much pop is so joyless.

Pop needs a kick up the arse. Pop needs to try harder. Pop need to be scared for its future. Pop needs to be forced into a corner. And then pop needs to come out fighting.Collapse )

This is v accurate. Not bolding because if you're interested, you'll read it.

Every one of their songs sounds the same.
lovelyeli 26th-Nov-2012 12:56 am (UTC)
i don't like them either..idk just not for me i guess.
aflaminghalo 26th-Nov-2012 12:56 am (UTC)
40 year olds can listen to them and make believe they're still 20.

vanishingbee 26th-Nov-2012 01:05 am (UTC)
the only thing I like about them is that they actually have a legit great relationship with their fans. always admirable imo.
one_hoopy_frood 26th-Nov-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
Ia! Also Dave Grohl seems to generally be a cool guy.
bienenkiste 26th-Nov-2012 02:30 am (UTC)

Nothing. They had like one good album in the 90s.
laurie_springs 26th-Nov-2012 03:43 am (UTC)
One of the members was in Nirvana and the acoustic version of Everlong immediately transports one back to 1998.

Literally convinced those are the reasons people think so at this point.
grande_latte 26th-Nov-2012 12:52 am (UTC)
it all comes in waves and we are currently in the pop cycle. give it a bit and we'll go back to the rock/bands cycle
kassieland 26th-Nov-2012 12:53 am (UTC)
Excuuuuuuuse me. Pitbull's new album is flawless.
vanishingbee 26th-Nov-2012 01:07 am (UTC)
I only tried listening to a pitbull album once, it was such an unpleasant experience. I think his songs are best mixed in with other people's stuff.
holdmedownxx 26th-Nov-2012 01:20 am (UTC)
everytime i think of pitbull i'm reminded of those two bitches of my super sweet 16 who both wanted him to perform.
harleenfrances 26th-Nov-2012 08:40 pm (UTC)
omg a pitbull fan tg i was beginning to think i was alone.
astormatsea 26th-Nov-2012 12:53 am (UTC)
pop music that tries harder? nobody wanted to buy Bionic in 2010 and nobodys gonna want to buy it in 2020 either. i'll keep the dubinspired shit.
foxylov3r 26th-Nov-2012 12:55 am (UTC)
Bionic didn't really try it was generic pop music Christina however THINKS it did
kofo4 26th-Nov-2012 12:54 am (UTC)
i actually agree that pop music (what makes it to the radio i mean) needs to improve. It's gotten so lazy with the same producers and writers being used over and over again. I mean sometimes i can hear the same reused chords and know who the producer was. That's nagl at all. One of the great things about pop is that it has the ability to be so diverse, more than others genre's. It can take so many different sounds and inspirations, tbh what's going on is getting annoying.
friarsfire 26th-Nov-2012 01:49 am (UTC)
ALL OF THISS Just gonna pick at the two things that made me go OMFYESS

grammaire 26th-Nov-2012 12:54 am (UTC)
Pop is dead.
foxylov3r 26th-Nov-2012 12:54 am (UTC)
i love pop music but there's no denying how stale and repetitive it's gotten in recent years
grande_latte 26th-Nov-2012 12:55 am (UTC)
example Kesha's new song and Flo Rida's Wild ones. they sound very similar
foxylov3r 26th-Nov-2012 12:56 am (UTC)

everything Will.i.am makes
thishollywood 26th-Nov-2012 01:46 am (UTC)

itscomicrelief 26th-Nov-2012 12:55 am (UTC)
Gaga will save us all with Art Pop tbh
xzackb 26th-Nov-2012 12:57 am (UTC)
already getting ready for the queen to slay i see.
vanishingbee 26th-Nov-2012 01:10 am (UTC)
bow to her glory.

(ngl I'll never hate popjustice because of how hard they stan for gaga. shows great taste.)
xena_mademegay 26th-Nov-2012 01:25 am (UTC)
manubibi 26th-Nov-2012 12:31 pm (UTC)
ngl I still trust her and hope her next album isn't gonna be shit like BTW. I liked The Fame so much
but then again, Natalia Kills managed to take the Gaga style and bring it to a way higher level so I think I'll stick with her if the new Gaga album sucks
thalassaemia 26th-Nov-2012 12:55 am (UTC)
Do you know why the same shitty derivative pop music gets made over and over? because in a world where pirating and illegal downloading are the norm, producers will only shell out on acts guaranteed to make them money, and because new/innovative stuff is too risky. Hence, the same shitty beats and lame cover songs.

And yes, every decade has its duds. Everyone reveres the 1960s but how many people mention shit like MacArthur Park or any number of flash in the pan pop groups that emerged then?
manubibi 26th-Nov-2012 12:39 pm (UTC)
You have a point, but the thing's more complex. Like, we're in a moment now where people will be more and more careful about buying stuff. Like I cannot afford to buy all the music I like that's out there. I admit I do download a lot of music illegally, but then again, I wouldn't have the possibility to know a lot of awesome bands if I hadn't downloaded them. On the other hand, I give the ones I think are better a lot of money for live concerts.
So I think the industry should change to adapt to this trend, because I'm sure most of the people downloading illegally does so only to get educated about good music and will eventually pay for it by buying the actual albums or go to concerts.
It makes me annoyed when people indeed do have the money to buy all the records they want and they end up buying the trendy stuff instead of looking for the good stuff that's underground. Like they could support the good acts and they end up buying what's cool at the moment.
mandramoddle 26th-Nov-2012 12:55 am (UTC)
I feel old when I say this but all pop music sounds the same to me. I went out last night and couldn't tell when they were switching to a new song.
gorlplz 26th-Nov-2012 12:56 am (UTC)

alicia keys, kween of all musics has returned to the pop scene

IA! Hopefully my fave will make it happen.
greenfairy_87 26th-Nov-2012 12:57 am (UTC)
I remember being so happy in 2004 when I heard Muse and Franz Ferdinand for the first time. It was like an animal stepping out into the grass after being caged by The Black Eyed Peas.
hoodoo 26th-Nov-2012 01:15 am (UTC)
yeah see it took me until 2008 for this to happen but never went back tbh
one_hoopy_frood 26th-Nov-2012 01:21 am (UTC)
That was suuuuuch a great year.
riookierin 26th-Nov-2012 01:36 am (UTC)
